CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Stand by for the samurai. Some New York women are learning the age-old techniques of Japanese warriors. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) their way to upper cut and chop in this report from our own Jeanne Moos.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Forget gun control. These days, what we need is samurai-sword control.

From "Kill Bill" to "The Last Samurai," samurai swords are slaying audiences. But if you want to speak softly and carry a big sword, maybe class is where you should go.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Three, four....

MOOS: From the thrust to the upper cut...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Seven, eight...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What is that supposed to do?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Cut a man in half.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, cut a man in a half.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Is there a man in your life you want to cut in half?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Sure.

MOOS: Unleash the woman warrior in you.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh!

MOOS: Master Hun, as he likes to call himself, has certainly mastered the art of getting whacked..

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Ow.

MOOS: ...at these girls-only workshops, sponsored by the Woman's Mosaic.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I saw "Kill Bill" and I loved it. Women being powerful.

LUCY LUI, ACTRESS: Silly Caucasian girls like to play with samurai swords.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK, follow through and hit me on the top of the head. OK!

MOOS: Uma Thurman had it hardy (ph). She trained in martial arts from 9 to 5, five days a week, for three months.

UMA THURMAN, ACTRESS: All I could do when I got home was fill a hot tub.

MOOS: No one left this class needing a hot soak.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, you kind of missed my head. You kind of chopped - chopped my cheek off. OK. One more time.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That way you remember.

MOOS: So you remember me. Maybe what directors of sword- fighting movies ought to remember is to avoid the word....

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Cut!

MOOS: Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
