CNN LIVE EVENT/SPECIAL

Gephardt Endorses Kerry

Aired February 6, 2004 - 11:23   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We are looking at a live picture from Warren, Michigan. That is the governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm. She has already come out and endorsed John Kerry for president, for a Democratic nomination. What we're standing by for is to see waiting to see Missouri Congressman Dick Gephardt come out and do the same thing. When he is ready to do that, you will see that live right here on CNN.
Well, how about that for timing? Let's go ahead and listen in.

REP. DICK GEPHARDT (D-MO): Thank you. Thank you.

(APPLAUSE)

Hello, Michigan.

(APPLAUSE)

Isn't it great to be with the next president of the United States?

(APPLAUSE)

Thank you for being here. Thank you all for coming out today. And let me give a salute to your wonderful, wonderful leaders in this state. All these folks have done such a wonderful job of leading in this state. These are the best people you could ever find to be in office -- in public office.

(APPLAUSE)

Many times on the campaign trail I used to say that, "This campaign is not about me, it's not about any of the candidates, it's about us." It's about our future as Americans. It's about what kind of jobs we're going to have. It's about what kind of health care our people are going to have. It's about the education our children are going to get in the schools. It's about whether or not our environment will be clean.

(APPLAUSE)

GEPHARDT: To beat George Bush, we need a leader who can go toe to toe with George Bush in these difficult, dangerous times on national security -- toe to toe.

We need a leader who can defeat George Bush in November in the general election. And we need a leader who we all know can walk into that Oval Office tomorrow afternoon and be a great president of the United States.

(APPLAUSE)

That leader is John Kerry. And I'm proud to endorse him to be the president of the United States of America.

(APPLAUSE)

I'm with you all the way.

(APPLAUSE)

KAGAN: All right, we heard the endorsement coming from Missouri Congressman Dick Gephardt, endorsing his formal rival, John Kerry, for president, this taking place right before the Michigan caucus. Significant in that Dick Gephardt had a lot of labor support, and labor could make the difference in Michigan, a state where John Kerry already has the endorsement of the governor there, Jennifer Granholm, who introduced the Missouri congressman.
