CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: In Sarasota, Florida, friends of Joseph Smith say it's just not like him. Smith sits in jail charged with the murder of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia.
CNN's Kris Osborn points out there are two sides to this story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KRIS OSBORN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Neighborhood kids happily toss the ball on a Sunday afternoon, just houses down the road from where accused kidnapper Joseph P. Smith was living.

TIM MARTIN, VICTIM'S NEIGHBOR: I thought he was, I thought he was a nice guy.

OSBORN: Neighbor Tim Martin said his kids often played with Smith's kids, riding bikes in the street. Martin said he was stunned to learn of the accusations that Smith kidnapped and killed 11-year- old Carlie Brucia. He says the neighborhood thought of Smith as a protector for their children.

MARTIN: The kids were all playing out there and people came down the street that he knew weren't really supposed to be around here, he was outside, just like I'd come outside and make sure, you know, nothing was going on.

OSBORN: Mother of four Shelly Clark says Carlie used to come over to play with her dog.

SHELLY CLARK, VICTIM'S NEIGHBOR: You never know what she would have turned into.

OSBORN: Clark is still so frightened, she doesn't want any of her kids going to the mailbox by themselves.

CLARK: To do that to a child who's just taking a simple, innocent trip home, doing what a child 11 and 12 years old does? I mean my daughter was down this road that same afternoon with her brothers.

OSBORN: A special tribute to Carlie was held at the Church of Christ, the property where investigators found her body. The church plans a memorial for her Tuesday.

(on camera): A formal funeral service is planned for later in the week, as well. And Carlie's father, Joey Brucia, says he plans to address the media Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.

Kris Osborn, CNN, Sarasota, Florida.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: And, as you just heard, the Brucia family has hard questions for Florida's criminal justice system.

We will have live coverage of Joey Brucia's news conference. And as you heard Chris say, that begins at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.
