CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Well there is a mystery in Moscow. A presidential candidate, who also happens to be a big critic of President Vladimir Putin, is missing. An investigation is now under way.
Our bureau chief there, Jill Dougherty, brings us the details of this report.

JILL DOUGHERTY, CNN MOSCOW BUREAU CHIEF: The mystery over the disappearance of Ivan Rybkin, if anything, is getting more complex. Ivan Rybkin disappeared Thursday night. Nobody, to this point, knows where he is. The investigation is under way, but there is no evidence of any foul play and there has been no ransom demand.

Mr. Rybkin's wife Thursday night did find clothes at home, no sign of any breaking and entering, dishes in the sink, his car in the garage. And his campaign spokeswoman says that they are worried.

KSENIA PONOMARYOVA, RYBKIN'S CAMPAIGN SPOKESWOMAN: I hope he is alive. I hope he will reappear. But I know nothing, actually, about this. And just of all trying to be an optimist.

DOUGHERTY: Ivan Rybkin is a candidate for president and he is also a former parliamentary speaker, a national security advisor to former President Boris Yeltsin and a very vocal and strong critic of President Vladimir Putin. Just last week he printed in a well-known newspaper an attack letter on Mr. Putin saying that he is Russia's biggest oligarch and has no right to power in Russia. The Kremlin made no comment to that letter.

Jill Dougherty, CNN, Moscow.
