SOLEDAD O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Believe it or not we are at week six in our "New You Resolution" series, but one of the five people we've been following didn't quite make it.
BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Yes, Dr. Sanjay Gupta now joins us.

What happened to Kim, huh, Sanjay? Good morning.

DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: Yes, I was going to ask you to guess, but you've already guessed. Our youngest participant, Kim Everett, well, she had a slip-up. She missed a workout with her trainer and didn't check in with her nutritionist for about five days.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KIM EVERETT, "NEW YOU RESOLUTION" PARTICIPANT: I missed a workout for the first time this week. I had a long week at work, a lot of craziness going on, so I had to cancel a workout session. I was disappointed, but I'm getting back on it tomorrow morning, first thing Monday morning.

I'm not going to lie. It's been very difficult. I mean, my lifestyle is really ridiculous with two jobs and juggling so many things, and adding in the working out and adding in the eating healthy. So, it's been very hard.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HEMMER: Sanjay, yes, is this pretty typical? A lot of people fall off the resolution bandwagon, do they not?

GUPTA: Yes, I know. You know, most people not surprises. But Kim is pretty normal actually. Most are going to hit some pitfalls. According to a study by the University of Washington's Behavioral Research Center, for example, one in four resolutions are broken within two weeks, and another 25 percent have been discarded within a month.

So, in a way, yes, Kim actually did better than normal.

O'BRIEN: But, Sanjay, my question for you this is I think at some point this girl was doing six days of cardio a week. She works two jobs. I mean, wasn't it too much to start with? Should she have started off slower, or should she cut back right now?

GUPTA: There are a lot of different philosophies on that, Soledad, no question about that. And we should point as well, she's 24 years old. She never really was in an exercise pattern or a nutrition pattern before. But now, her nutritionist and her trainer say she needs to jump back on the horse. They say getting back into the routine is the best way to build a habit, especially if you get off of it of it for a short time.

Kim is going to do that. We've already started her on that. We want to see how she's doing next week.

But a lot of people at home are sort of wondering what you do if you find yourself slipping at home. So, here is what the American Council on Exercise offers in terms of tips. Take small steps. Setting small goals will leave you with more immediate feelings of success. Be realistic. Change for yourself. Don't dwell on the negative feelings. Studies show that negatives feelings are a great cause of relapse. Also, be creative yet realistic. Plan a fun class, but make sure to schedule time when it's convenient. These are difficult things sometimes, but we are wishing Kim well.

Kathryn Burkholder, you remember her as well. She's been sticking with her commitment so far to not smoke, but she also admits that it's been pretty difficult for her as well.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KATHRYN BURKHOLDER, "NEW YOU RESOLUTION" PARTICIPANT: If you ask me in 30 years, I'm sure that I'll be very glad that I quit. There is just -- when you quit smoking, there is no instant gratification. It doesn’t make you feel better instantly. For me, I didn't ever feel that bad from smoking, again which I think of what made it so hard to quit.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GUPTA: These, by the way, are the confessionals that both Kim and Kathryn had for us.

Meanwhile, you remember the Kirkbrides and David Peck? Well, they're plugging away at their programs. They're doing pretty well. Here are some of the specifics of their plans.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

PAM KIRKBRIDE, "NEW YOU RESOLUTION" PARTICIPANT: Oh, my god. Oh my god! OK.

GUPTA (voice-over): Total weight loss for the Kirkbrides so far: Michael, 15 pounds; Pam, 7 pounds.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Look at how at well you guys are doing. You've gone up in everything tremendously.

GUPTA: Pam can do more push-ups. Michael is more flexible. Their strength has increased, thanks to 10 minutes of daily exercises, like the plank, wall sits, and crunches, and at least 30 minutes of cardio three times a week, and they walk as much as possible. Teamwork is important. While one parent stays with Olivia, the other goes to the gym.

Time to work out came from real simple reorganization. Now, they can plan ahead. And they're saving a full 10 minutes every morning and leaving less stress.

MICHAEL KIRKBRIDE, "NEW YOU RESOLUTION" PARTICIPANT: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) dirty diaper.

GUPTA: Eating mini-meals, smaller portions throughout the day instead of big meals, jump started their metabolism.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You really should be eating five times a day. You shouldn’t be hungry.

GUPTA: They've also have traded sodas, deserts, chips and fried foods for more salads, sushi, and seltzer water.

M. KIRKBRIDE: We're eating much better. We're losing a little weight and are better organized.

P. KIRKBRIDE: Outlook is positive.

DAVID PECK, "NEW YOU RESOLUTION" PARTICIPANT: People are, you know, surprised now by my portion size and portion control.

GUPTA: Call it his mantra...

PECK: Portion control.

GUPTA: ... a clarion call...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Portion control.

GUPTA: ... or his "New You" theme.

PECK: Portion size.

GUPTA: It's what David's plan has been all about. In six weeks, David says he's cut his food and fat intake in half.

PECK: And when I bend over I don't feel a big gut anymore.

GUPTA: And bolstered his stock of healthy food. Now, he's eating soy products to lower his cholesterol, using leaner meats like fish and chicken and eats better red meat.

PECK: The salmon is really good.

GUPTA: And eating high fiber and no fat-foods like fruits and veggies.

PECK: It definitely made me try things I would have never tried before. GUPTA: Fewer calories, a new trainer, and more cardio sessions. He's up to five or six days a week from three days has caused his weight to dip. He's down to 197 from 207.

The best side effect of the new Dave, more time with the family. Exercise with them went from rare to a once-a-week engagement. Dave is convinced he's leaving old bad habits in his wake.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

Join us next Tuesday 7:00 a.m. Eastern for a follow-up on how Kim is doing. We'll bring you up to speed on that. Also for more details on Kim's and Kathryn's plans as well.

Back to you guys in New York.
