DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Dogs like Josh may have the winning formula for another competitive affair: dating. A new book out, "What a Lucky Dog: How to Understand Men Through Their Dogs," attempts to show singles searching for Mr. Right.
Author Wendy Diamond is here with some doggy-dog, a little special guest.

Wendy, good morning.

WENDY DIAMOND, AUTHOR, "WHAT A LUCKY DOG": Good morning, Daryn.

KAGAN: And who is that special guest you have with you in your lap?

DIAMOND: This is Lucky. This is my dog, Lucky, who is a Maltese that I rescued.

KAGAN: And Lucky got kicked out of Westminster (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

DIAMOND: Right, right. Well, what happened is I came from the airport, and I -- you know, and I went directly to Westminster. And, of course, I had my dog, and I had her in the bag, but her head popped out. And there she got booted right out of there.

KAGAN: Well, good for you for being a rescue dog owner. I saw that.

For the record, you didn't think it was going to be Josh who won. You thought it was going to be the Pekingese, right?

DIAMOND: I did. I definitely thought it was going to the Pekingese. You know, I love the toy group.

KAGAN: You do like those little dogs. All right, let's get some -- let's hook up some men and women here.

DIAMOND: OK.

KAGAN: Now, you say that you can tell a lot about a guy by the kind of dog that he has.

DIAMOND: Absolutely.

KAGAN: All right, we're going to go through some breeds here. First of all, if a guy has a lab, a Labrador retriever, what can you tell about him? DIAMOND: He's a very energetic. He's active. He's a very faithful man, and it's also somebody who loves to go in the park and who loves to be with family and is very much, you know, somebody who is a one-woman-type guy.

KAGAN: Oh, we like that. Now, a German...

DIAMOND: Yes, we love that.

KAGAN: A German shepherd owner, what kind of guy is that, according to you?

DIAMOND: This is more of a strict man. It's somebody who really knows what they want, who is going to definitely be the leader of the house, the man in the house. This is somebody who, again, loves to be outside and loves to take out -- do all types of activities.

KAGAN: And the guy who owns a poodle? I don't know a guy who owns a poodle.

DIAMOND: Well, this type of guy is very intelligent, and this is somebody who always dresses impeccably...

KAGAN: Yes.

DIAMOND: ... and is very -- you know, and for him, he likes the finest things in life.

KAGAN: OK. And the Maltese. Again I don't know a lot of guys...

DIAMOND: Well, Lucky, basically -- she's, like, so funny. This kind of guy always gets away with every single thing. I mean, he's so cute. He's very much a popular type of man and is -- you know, you kind of have to keep him on a short leash, because, you know, a lot of people like him, and he's always got all of these people always after him.

KAGAN: OK. It sounds like you want to steer clear of a Maltese owner.

Finally, in your book, you say you can train your man as well as you can train your dog.

DIAMOND: Absolutely. I think the very important thing, like with dogs and men, is at the beginning train them. All men love to be trained. Just like dogs, they all want to be trained.

KAGAN: Do you crate train them? Do you crate train your men, Wendy?

DIAMOND: Oh, my -- well, not that much. We keep him on a short leash at the beginning. You know, no tricks without treats.

KAGAN: Very good. DIAMOND: And also, you know, it's basically really important that, like, no means no, and you get all of, you know, the boundaries of where you want that relationship to be straight out at the beginning.

KAGAN: At the beginning.

DIAMOND: So, yes...

KAGAN: No bad habits develop. They're harder to break.

DIAMOND: Absolutely. And it's really important, like, that you go through everything with them so that you know, like, at the end of the day this is how the relationship is going to be from now on, and he understands straight out at the beginning that you train him.

KAGAN: You start early.

Well, Wendy, you know, Valentine's is right around the corner. Thank you for that advice for the woman looking out there for dog owners, dog lovers.

DIAMOND: You can't go to the dog park without this book.

KAGAN: Absolutely. I'll keep that in mind before I go later today with (UNINTELLIGIBLE).

DIAMOND: Absolutely.

KAGAN: The book is called, "What a Lucky Dog: How to Understand Men Through Their Dogs," and Wendy Diamond is probably the only woman in America would have written it. And thank you to Lucky too...

DIAMOND: Thank you so much, Daryn. Have a great day.

KAGAN: ... for the cameo appearance. Wendy Diamond.
