CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Gay marriages in San Francisco will go on today. Hundreds more will be joined in matrimony thanks to Mayor Gavin Newsom. He stirred up quite a legal controversy by giving the go-ahead for gay marriages in his city, even though it's against state law.
Newsom says he will prevail.

MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: It will stand ultimately eventually. I mean, I think, you know, imagine people were saying in 1966 the same things they're saying now about blacks and whites getting married. That's in my lifetime. It's just so absurd as to be literally unbelievable.

They were saying that when Catholics couldn't marry Protestants at the turn of the century, the same things that were being said are being said today, and I think it's just a question of time.

COSTELLO: Our Miguel Marquez gives us some details on exactly how many couples are rushing to San Francisco City Hall to get married.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Another day, another 469 marriage licenses granted to gay and lesbian couples in San Francisco. The county assessor recorder here is saying that the total is now up over 1,600 licenses granted.

Today brought many long lines. Numbers were handed out at one point for a lucky few to get in. Resources for volunteers at City Hall are taxed to the limit. They can only do about one marriage a minute, and hundreds of people are now waiting in line overnight for a first-come, first-serve marriage possibility tomorrow.

Miguel Marquez, CNN, San Francisco.
