CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: More movie awards. This time the British Film Academy was handing out the statues. And the picks in London may offer a preview of Hollywood's big show. That'll happen about two weeks, you know, the Oscars?
Nina Hannar has more from Britain.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

NINA HANNAR, ITV CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Last stop before the Oscars and there was definitely a touch of Hollywood at the glittering film awards. Ever since the BAFTAs were moved forward to precede the Oscars, big name stars like Renee Zellweger have made the event a regular stop on the awards trail. Even Johnny Depp, up for best actor, made a rare appearance.

The night had been set up as a battle between "Cold Mountain," up for 13 awards, and "Lord of the Rings," up for 12.

JUDE LAW, ACTOR, "COLD MOUNTAIN": We can have a good night whatever happens. We can have a good night because we've got 13 nominations and the nominations, I'm sure everyone will agree, are what it's all about.

IAN MCKELLEN, ACTOR, "LORD OF THE RINGS": So many people have enjoyed this film all over the world, just as they enjoyed reading the novel on which it's based, that whether we actually win the awards here isn't going to worry us too much.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"

HANNAR: On the night, "The Lord of the Rings" fared the best, five awards, including the prestigious best film. "Cold Mountain" got just two, for music and best supporting actress for Renee Zellweger.

RENEE ZELLWEGER, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, "COLD MOUNTAIN": Someone said tonight as an American to be recognized by the British Academy is a big thing. And for me personally, it is, as well. I'm really, I'm really grateful. It's

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Down! All hands down!

(END VIDEO CLIP) HANNAR: It was this seafaring epic that ensured no one film stole the show. "Master and Commander" picked up four BAFTAs, including one for its director, Peter Weir.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I feel it in my fingers...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HANNAR: And Jude Law may have lost out, but at least Bill Nighy provided the British acting success.

BILL NIGHY, BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, "LOVE, ACTUALLY": Well, I'm a bit over excited, actually. I've got, I was quite nervous and I was quite stunned, actually. In the kind of company I was mentioned in, I didn't, I really, when it finally came to the crunch, I had difficulty persuading myself that I might win and when I did, it came as a big shock.

HANNAR (on camera): So in the end, there was to be no clean sweep for any one film. It all sets up an intriguing battle for the Oscars in just two week's time.

(voice-over): Though the makers of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy can at least feel a little more optimistic than most of the competition.

Nina Hannar, ITV news.

COSTELLO: And don't forget to tune in for CNN's special coverage of the Oscars. Daryn Kagan will have all the stars straight from the red carpet. It all comes your way on Oscar night, February 29th. It airs at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
