CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: To the trial of Martha Stewart now. Expect testimony today from friends of the prosecution's star witness. It's coming after a blow to the prosecution. Some telephone records involving Stewart and her broker are being admitted into evidence, but the judge says jurors cannot speculate on what was said and why.
Our Deborah Feyerick has more.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The day of Martha Stewart's questionable trade, her broker, Peter Bacanovic, was on holiday in Miami Beach. Even so, he stayed in touch with his office at Merrill Lynch. Phone records show he received or made about a dozen calls, presumably speaking with his assistant.

Prosecutors have been desperately trying to introduce other phone calls they say are between Stewart and her broker. Prosecutors say some of the calls were made at key times and therefore prove the two conspired to cover-up the reason for the trade. One of those calls, early the day Stewart was to meet with federal investigators. The judge admitted several calls into evidence, but told the jury they could not speculate on what was said. An FBI agent who scanned millions of phone numbers admitted there was no way to tell who was on the calls.

A year before she sold ImClone's stock, Stewart seems to have been unhappy with her long time broker. An e-mail she sent to Bacanovic instructed him, "Do nothing," Stewart writing, "The account is a mess, as is the pension account. It's time for me to give my money to a professional money manager. We have just watched this slide and done nothing and I'm none too happy."

(on camera): As the government begins winding up its case, prosecutors plan to call friends of their star witness, Doug Faneuil. They'll likely repeat conversations they had with the young assistant broker in which he allegedly tells them everything, implicating his boss, Peter Bacanovic, and Martha Stewart.
