PAUL CHAMBERS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): University of Colorado head football coach Gary Barnett, placed on paid administrative leave after his remarks Tuesday about Katie Hnida, a female place kicker who accused a teammate of raping her.

GARY BARNETT, UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO FOOTBALL COACH: It was obvious that Katie was not very good. She was awful, OK? And so guy, you know what guys do? They respect your ability. I mean you can be 90 years old, but if you can go out and play, they respect you. Well, Katie was, Katie was a girl. And not only was she a girl, she was terrible, OK? And there's no other way to say it. She couldn't kick the ball through the uprights.

ELIZABETH HOFFMAN, PRESIDENT, UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO: His remarks about her were extremely inappropriate and insensitive. Rape is a horrific allegation and it should be taken seriously.

CHAMBERS: Nhida, who played at the University of Colorado in 1999, told "Sports Illustrated" that she was raped by a teammate at his home. She also said she was verbally abused, harassed and molested by other players on the team. After the university announced its decision late Wednesday night, Barnett read a prepared statement.

BARNETT: I sincerely regret that yesterday a portion of my remarks were either misinterpreted or taken -- aired out of context, and I apologize for answering that question in a manner where I must have come across as insensitive.

CHAMBERS: The University of Colorado has been under scrutiny after depositions surfaced from three women who claimed they were raped at or just after a sex party in Boulder in December of 2001. Word surfaced Wednesday of yet another rape allegation.

In the written statement, Nhida said she decided to go public because of the controversy surrounding Boulder's program. She dropped out of the University of Colorado her sophomore year and now plays football for the University of New Mexico.

I'm Paul Chambers reporting.
