CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: A strange case at Fort Lewis in Washington State. A National Guard member is charged with trying to provide military information to al Qaeda. Specialist Ryan Anderson's unit has been preparing for deployment to Iraq.
Sally Schulze of our Seattle affiliate KIRO has details.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He is accused of two specifications of attempting to give intelligence to the enemy, persons he believed to be members of the al Qaeda terrorist network, under Article 80 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

SALLY SCHULZE, KIRO CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): And that's just part of the serious charges now filed against Specialist Ryan Anderson. In these papers the military released, they lay out part of their case against the 26-year-old member of the Washington National Guard 81st Armored Brigade. They claim Anderson attempted to knowingly give intelligence to the enemy such as troop strength, movements, equipment, tactics and weapons systems, methods and means of killing U.S. Army personnel and destroying U.S. Army weapons systems and equipment.

The charge sheet also says Anderson wrote these words to people he thought were part of the al Qaeda terrorist network: "I wish to meet with you. I share your cause. I wish to continue contact through conversations and personal meetings."

Right now, Anderson remains in the stockade here at Fort Lewis, the military being vague on the details of that confinement.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He's being held according to the regulations of the Military Code of Justice and what's appropriate to the case being presented.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: That report from Sally Schulze of CNN affiliate KIRO in Seattle.
