CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Rescue crews in Niagara Falls reacted in the nick of time to prevent a woman from going over the edge without a barrel.
George Richert of CNN affiliate WIVB has more on this story from Ontario.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

FRED HALL, FIREFIGHTER: It's unbelievable. I just got shivers of happiness.

GEORGE RICHERT, WIVB CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): That's Niagara Falls' Ontario firefighter Fred Hall (ph) saving a woman's life 100 feet from the brink of Niagara Falls. He was lowered by safety rope down the icy banks.

HALL: All the way down I just kept saying, "I'm coming, I'm coming, just hang on, hang on." She was looking at me at that point and once I got to her and got the -- I told her to hang on and I got her strapped in and then she passed out.

RICHERT: The woman faded in and out of consciousness.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hypothermia had set in. She'd probably been in the water about an hour at that point in time.

RICHERT: This treacherous rescue lasted one hour, as tourists looked on from outside the Table Rock restaurant. Ontario Hydro even adjusted its intakes upstream to lower the water level.

It's believed the woman floated down river from the Dufferin Islands in the upper rapids. Finally, she was lifted to safety, still in shock and quivering from the frigid rush of the Niagara.

HALL: I don't think we've ever had one this close to the falls that made it back out. So, this is good for us.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: That report came from George Richert of CNN affiliate WIVB.

Police say they do not suspect foul play in the incident and they believe the woman simply jumped into the river.
