CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The long anticipated talks to end the North Korea nuclear threat have begun in Beijing with diplomats on all sides hopeful that some sort of agreement can be reached.
Our senior Asia correspondent Mike Chinoy joins us live from Beijing with more on day one.

Hello -- Mike.

MIKE CHINOY, CNN SENIOR ASIA CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Carol.

Well day one is just about over here. Four hours with the heads of the delegations from the six countries attending these talks, and then later on, bilateral meetings, including one between the American envoy and his North Korean counterpart.

The U.S. and North Korea starkly (ph) differing positions as these talks open. The United States envoy insisting that the North Koreans agree to give up their nuclear program before any other measures can be discussed. The North Koreans saying they would stick to their principles but hinting at flexibility.

What we're getting so far are signs that there has been some interesting movement on procedural issues. Talking about setting up committees to discuss some of the difficult issues, including the North's uranium-based nuclear program, which Pyongyang denies having, but so far no sign of whether we have any substantive movement -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Mike Chinoy reporting live from Beijing this morning.
