DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: I'm Daryn Kagan live in downtown Los Angeles, where we are at the Fa9shion Institute for Design and Merchandising. They have many of the costumes on display here that are related to the Oscars.
Look at this, how close you get to some of these thing. This is the dress that Nicole Kidman actually wore in "Cold Mountain" as she splayed Ada Monroe.

We are talking costume design this hour.

As I walk over here, I want to put up the nominees for best costume design. You have "Girl with the Pearl Earring," "The Last Samurai," "The Lord of the Rings," "Master and Commander" and "Seabiscuit."

And it turns out we have the nominee for Judianna Makovsky.

Congratulations on your nomination. This is huge.

JUDIANNA MAKOVSKY, OSCAR NOMINEE FOR COSTUME DESIGN: Thank you. This is really exciting.

KAGAN: And we have your fine work right here with us. Talk us through, who you designed for, and what you were thinking as you put the detail in the "Seabiscuit" costumes.

MAKOVSKY: Well, we start here, we have Jeff Bridges in his sportswear for behind the scenes at the racetrack, which I hope looks very American. That's what we tried for. And then we have the racing silks. These are the Howard silks, which are pretty much an exact recreation...

KAGAN: So this is what Tobey Maguire wore?

MAKOVSKY: Tobey Maguire and Gary Stevens.

KAGAN: On this particular, like for the detail, like I'm noticing the crochet collar up here...

MAKOVSKY: Yes, that's a little Jabo (ph) that -- actually old ladies used to crochet it for only the top jockeys. And when I first saw the pictures, I couldn't figure out what it was, and we found some very old jockeys who could tell me told us what they were.

KAGAN: And how they recreate it?

MAKOVSKY: And we found some little old ladies do that for us.

KAGAN: Excellent.

Speaking of little ladies, some little lady wore this, Elizabeth Banks.

MAKOVSKY: Yes, this is Elizabeth Banks, and we had this as a Mexican riding outfit, which is sort of a '30s Mexican riding outfit that we had embroidered for her.

KAGAN: And this one I love, because one of the accessories for Jeff Bridges' coat is mud.

MAKOVSKY: Yes, this is the mud from the set, from an open racing car from about 1912. And we had this linen duster made for him to protect him so it wouldn't get all over his clothes.

KAGAN: But you were telling me earlier for this, you actually put Jeff Bridges in this coat and threw mud at him.

MAKOVSKY: We did. That's the fun we get as costume writers, yes, to throw mud at the actors.

KAGAN: Judianna, this is your third nomination. Also nominated for "Harry Potter" and "Pleasantville." I don't know if we could come up with three completely different movies like that.

MAKOVSKY: We try. I like to be diverse. I don't like to do the same things twice. I'm been lucky enough to be able to do that.

KAGAN: And you're inspiration when you're given a movie like "Seabiscuit," what's the first step?

MAKOVSKY: Usually, the script. It's the characters. That's the most important thing, and working with the directors and the actors to try to figure out who these people are, and then the clothes come after.

KAGAN: And in the world of costume design, how much does it change your career to get not jut one, but there's Oscar nominations?

MAKOVSKY: Well, it opens up more opportunities for sure, to have more interesting types of work, rather than just a lot of contemporary.

KAGAN: Your phone is ringing, safe to say?

MAKOVSKY: Sometimes, not really.

KAGAN: So call.

MAKOVSKY: So call, yes, exactly right.

KAGAN: And finally, since we're talking clothes, I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you what are you wearing on Oscar night, on Sunday? MAKOVSKY: Well, I'm having something made by the gentleman who made this lovely outfit here, John David Ridge, and hopefully it will be comfortable. That's all I'm concerned, is comfort.

KAGAN: It is about comfort, isn't it? And not high shoes.

MAKOVSKY: Unfortunately, I blew that one. I definitely have high shoes.

KAGAN: Well, we will see you on the red carpet. Judianna Makovsky, congratulations on your third Oscar nomination, this time for "Seabiscuit." Thanks for coming down.

MAKOVSKY: Thank you. Thank you very much.
