HEIDI COLLINS, ANCHOR: First, today's adventure on the edge.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANNOUNCER: South Georgia Island. A place so remote very few ever cross its frigid borders. The only access is by sea. One group recently took the challenge, ready to summit its jagged peaks and ski its untouched snow.

The trip there took more than a week, from the Balkan Mountains through 800 miles of treacherous waters dotted with icebergs.

With some of the richest wildlife reserves in the world, South Georgia is an island ruled by nature and animals. Seals and penguins are everywhere.

But as the group found, even in Antarctica's spring, conditions can be treacherous, with snow, ice and winds that sometimes reach more than 130 miles an hour.

Finally granted a sunny day, they began their trek to the top of one of the island's mountains. And their ride to the bottom. Summits here stand over 9,000 feet above the sea, and there are no real maps.

The reward: gliding down the icy slopes and powder touched by no one else, with the knowledge that it's nature who's in charge here.
