Senate Battles Over Bolton; Stray Plane Triggered Capitol Evacuation

DARYN KAGAN, CNN CO-ANCHOR: We have a lot to get to here in Atlanta. Let's start by taking a look at what's happening now in the news.
A meeting on Capitol Hill right now could set the stage for a showdown in the filibuster fight. The Senate Judiciary Committee is considering three of President Bush's nominees. We may be closer to a showdown over judicial filibusters, as I said.

All right. Let's move on to European officials reportedly have sent a stern warning to Iran. Today's "Washington Post" reports Europe would end talks with Iran if it restarted its nuclear program. European officials would also sign on to a U.S. plan for punitive measures against Iran. For now, Iranian officials, they decided to delay plans on restarting a uranium conversion facility.

Flames and black smoke rise from a Baghdad neighborhood. A car bomb exploded at a marketplace this morning, killing 12 and wounding 56. A few hours later, another suicide car bomb targeted a U.S. military convoy in the capitol. Five civilians were hurt. There were no word on American casualties.

This hour on Capitol Hill, a powerful Senate committee gathers for a vote on an embattled presidential nominee. Those votes may be there for John Bolton, but there also is venom for the man. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is just now meeting to debate John Bolton's nomination as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. We are looking at a live picture from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee right now. Democrats have challenged President Bush's choice on charges he has neither the temperament nor the diplomacy to do the job.
