Is Paris Hilton Hurting Britney Spears` Image; Kate Winslet Discusses Body Image in Hollywood

Aired November 29, 2006 - 23:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

A.J. HAMMER, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: Is Borat to blame for Pam Anderson`s breakup? Pam Anderson speaks out. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
BROOKE ANDERSON, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: And a new wrinkle in Madonna`s adoption. It could be in jeopardy. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. TV`s most provocative entertainment news show starts right now.

HAMMER: On SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, Britney versus K-Fed, the image war heats up. Britney behaving badly, painting the town red with her new best friend, while her ex, Kevin Federline, is having quiet evenings. Tonight, who will come out on top in the divorce battle.

Famous couples, famous kids. Shilo, Suri, seeing flash bulbs since birth. Can they ever have a chance at a normal life? Is there a secret to raising kids in the spotlight? Tonight the stars and their kids, from pacifiers to paparazzi.

Hello, I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.

ANDERSON: Hi there, everybody. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. And now Britney Spears is getting her wild on. And just like everything else she does, it`s all people can talk about.

HAMMER: Yes Brooke, we can say Britney is behaving badly. She has paired up with Paris Hilton to hit the party circuit big time just weeks, of course, after dumping her husband. And now Lindsay Lohan has joined the crew, basically they`re forming, perhaps, the most famous trio of A-list partiers since Frank, Dean and Sammy hit Vegas. And it is definitely sparking a lot of fun banter in the media.

But wait, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT will tell you that, for Britney, it could has some very serious consequences. It could lead to a bitter custody battle for her babies.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER (voice-over): You had the Rat Pack of the 1960s, the Saint Elmo`s Fire Brat pack of the 1980s, now, ladies and gentlemen, Regis Philbin with the newest headline grabbing social club.

REGIS PHILBIN, TV HOST: Now we have the Brit Pack.

HAMMER: That`s right. Britney Spears, fresh off her split from Kevin Federline, hitting the party scene hard with Paris Hilton. And now Lindsay Lohan has joined this new starlet triumvirate. The media can`t get enough of them.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: There`s a bimbo summit? I wasn`t summoned.

HAMMER: Even the View`s Rosie O`Donnell is being forced to intervene.

ROSIE O`DONNELL, THE VIEW: I want Britney to move in with me and Kelly and the kids. She is going through a hard time. I think she needs a stable family around her.

HAMMER: Crazy or not, Celebrity watchers tell SHOWBIZ TONIGHT people just can`t stop talking about Britney and her new friends.

HARVEY LEVIN, TMZ. COM: They are birds of a feather. They like partying. They like fashion. They like guys. They are perfect for each other.

JO PIAZZA, NY DAILY NEWS: It kind of reminds me of Heather.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?

PIAZZA: Three popular girls taking the town by storm. For Britney, going out with Paris is kind of like a big screw you to Kevin Federline. Look at me, I`m this crazy party girl. I`m going on a trampage and having a great time and you`re still K-Fed.

HAMMER: SHOWBIZ TONIGHT on the pulse of the reaction to Britney`s new playmate. And we can report, it is no longer fun and games. It is affecting her post-divorce image. The ink was barely dry on her divorce filing from K-Fed when we first saw Britney Spears hitting the clubs with Paris Hilton.

PIAZZA: Paris is kind of turning Britney into her own little mini me.

HAMMER: The Daily News` Jo Piazza tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that Brit is becoming more Paris like by the day.

PIAZZA: Paris is the epitome of everything that is bimbo-tastic in Hollywood. And Britney becoming Paris` little doppleganger isn`t sitting well with Britney`s young and loyal fans.

HAMMERS: That`s true. Fans are flooding Britney`s official MySpace page with comments demands like, what the hell are you doing? Comments like, your behavior is repulsive. Pleas, such as, don`t make it harder to stay by your side. And Spears may have more to worry about than fan reaction.

PIAZZA: She also needs to remember that she is in the middle of a custody battle. And going out partying with Paris Hilton every night isn`t necessarily going to bode well for her in court.

HAMMER: Yes, that custody battle, and it`s looking like Federline has noticed that, too. He is apparently trying to contrast himself to Brit`s new hard-partying ways. In a statement to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, his divorce attorney spokesman says, quote, Kevin is upbeat and happy. They -- they being Kevin and his divorce attorney -- are enjoying a nice quiet evening in Beverly Hills. Quiet, and, as if we forgot, the statement reminds us that Kevin is seeking custody of his and Britney`s two babies.

So just after K-Fed tried to convince the world he is a pimptastic rapper in his new music video, it seems he could be trying to pass himself off as Saint Kevin in order to win the upper hand in his custody battle. If that`s true, TMZ.com`s Harvey Levin tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT K-Fed should change his strategy.

LEVIN: She`s going to get custody. Just because she`s partying doesn`t make her an unfit mom. She spent a lot of time with these kids. So a lot of this is show, (INAUDIBLE), and it`s not going to amount to anything.

HAMMER: But, through it all, it appears Britney has her new girlfriends to support her. But Levin is wondering, what`s the big deal?

LEVIN: I don`t know why that`s so shocking. She was a party girl before she got married. If Britney Spears started hanging out with Condoleezza Rice, that would be shocking.

HAMMER: Because, as we all know, in tough times, a famous woman like Britney can`t have too many famous girlfriends.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER: Well, with Britney Spears` many years in the public eye, her two marriages and her two children, it`s easy to forget how young she really is. Remember, she is only turning 25, and that`s going to happen this Saturday. And it`s a pretty safe bet there will be one big party with Britney`s new friends.

ANDERSON: So Britney`s got some new friends, and it seems Kevin has got a new strategy. But will Britney`s late nights really earn points for Kevin in court? With us tonight in New York is celebrity divorce attorney Nancy Shemtob. Hey Nancy.

NANCY CHEMTOB, CELEBRITY DIVORCE LAWYER: Hi. How are you?

ANDERSON: Doing well, thank you. Now Nancy, when Britney announced her divorce, I can not tell you how many people were cheering her independence from Kevin, shouting from the rooftops. But now with the videos of her everywhere, partying into all hours of the night, and, you know, she is not partying quietly. She is going to the hot spots where she knows the paparazzi are going to be. What do you think, Nancy? Because this can`t be good for her image as a mother, because people are wondering what`s happening with the kids.

CHEMTOB: It`s not good for her image as a mother, but the question is, she is not partying during the day. It`s good for her image as a celebrity. It`s good for her business. It`s clearly a ploy on her part to enhance her career.

ANDERSON: As we just heard in A.J.`s piece, K-Fed is playing up his so called quieter side, having dinner with his attorney. And Charles, can we take a look at this statement that we received. The phrase, spending a quiet evening, enjoying a nice quiet evening in Beverly Hills, really stands out to me, Nancy, because that wording, not a mistake. Now you`ve been in the nastiest divorce battles that celebrities can have. Is this just a tactic by Kevin to win favor and get the kids?

CHEMTOB: Definitely. He has been slammed for being out partying with other women, and a quiet night, just he`s sending out to the world. He is not drinking and he is not falandering (ph).

ANDERSON: Well, we know that he is no angel either. Though I have met him. I have sat down with him. He does play up the bad-boy image at times, he does. And his former history with girlfriends and kids isn`t stellar. Are you telling me that K-Fed`s attorney could possibly argue that he`s the more fit parent?

CHEMTOB: Absolutely. That`s what his argument is going to be. If he is going for sole custody, they are trying to put him out in the public as being the more fit parent. So, therefore, he`s not out and about right now. He is spending quiet nights. That`s what they are trying to do. While Britney is clearly with her friends, Paris and Lindsay, and she is out and about now.

ANDERSON: So break it down for me, Nancy. With everything that`s happened lately, if you were involved in this battle, who is going to come out ahead?

CHEMTOB: Britney is going to come out ahead. There is no way. She is more capable of taking care of the children. She is with the children. She is pictured with the children. Just because she is out at night with her friends doesn`t make her unfit. Her children should be sleeping during the hours that she is out. Her children are small. They should be asleep at 7:30. What she does from 7:30 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. really is irrelevant as to a custody battle.

ANDERSON: Hopefully she is not sleeping during the day. Hopefully she`s taking care of them. It`s so troublesome and hopefully those kids are being properly cared for. Celebrity divorce attorney Nancy Chemtob, thanks for joining us.

CHEMTOB: Thanks for having me.

HAMMER: Well The other big star divorce story right now, Pam Anderson and Kid Rock, of course. On her website Anderson says that Kid Rock is great, but they just don`t belong together. But could it actually be that Borat is to blame? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT looks into the rumor that Pam`s role in Borat`s movie could have been what busted up their marriage, and that`s coming up at 31 minutes past the hour.

ANDERSON: And now we want to hear from you. It`s our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. Britney spears out partying, is she damaging her image? Go to CNN.com/SHOWBIZTONIGHT. Send us an e-mail, SHOWBIZTONIGHT@CNN.com.

And, don`t forget, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is the only entertainment news show that lets you express your opinion on video. So just take a look into your video camera or your web cam. Send us a piece of your mind about whatever you`re thinking about by video e-mail. It`s really easy. Head to our website, CNN.com/SHOWBIZTONIGHT and you can learn how to do it. Keep them short and sweet, 30 seconds or less. Then watch for them right here only on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

HAMMER: A judge makes a crucial decision that could affect whether Madonna can adopt a baby boy from Malawi. What is it? We`re going to tell you all about it coming up next.

ANDERSON: Plus, can Madonna`s kids and the kids of other famous couples ever have a shot at a normal life? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT looks into stars and their kids. That`s ahead. We`ll also have this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KATE WINSLET, ACTRESS: My image was so fundamentally altered that it was like, no, no, this is going against my morals here, and I`ve had nothing to do with this.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: Kate wins let opens up about body image in Hollywood and what makes her so angry about the messages that magazines send. It`s a revealing interview with Kate Winslet coming up on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. We`ll be right back.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York. And it`s time now for a story that made us say, that`s ridiculous!

Of course baseball had the steroid scandal. There were allegations of doping at the Tour de France, and now drug testing has been instituted for another group of competitors, chess players. Yes, believe it or not, the World Chess Federation is introducing drug testing. It is going to start at the Asian Games this week. The manager of that competition says he doesn`t know which drug could possibly help a chess player improve his game. And we have to agree with that. Drug testing chess players -- now that`s ridiculous!

In tonight`s Legal Lowdown, it is a battle over babies involving two legally blonds. Tonight judges have ruled on two major cases, Anna Nicole Smith`s baby may be forced to undergo a paternity test. And if you thought you heard the last of the Madonna adoption battle, you would be wrong on that. Harvey Levin, from TMZ.com, following both cases for us tonight in Glendale, California. Harvey, let`s get to it with Anna Nicole Smith and this ongoing paternity battle. Of course, she says Howard K. Stern is the father. Photograph Larry Birkhead (ph) claims he is the baby`s daddy. And now a judge has handed down a big ruling. Is Anna Nicole actually finally going to have to hand over her daughter, Danni-Lynne (ph), to get tested? Break it down for us.

LEVIN: Well, it is heading in that direction, A.J. What happened is that a Los Angeles county superior court judge, who said that even though Anna Nicole is in the Bahamas, she is subject to the jurisdiction of the court in Los Angeles County, and that he is now willing to hear arguments over whether this baby should have to undergo genetic testing. And the way I understand the law in this area, now that she is subject to the jurisdiction, if there is a legitimate dispute going on and Larry Birkhead, who says he is the father, can prove he was with her at around the time she got pregnant, I think the odds are that Anna Nicole is going to have to submit this baby for testing.

HAMMER: And it seems to me that at this point it kind of makes sense. I didn`t necessarily feel that way before. But if you notice in the video we were just showing, or if you notice in that interview that she gave to Entertainment Tonight, and basically all the coverage that has been of Anna Nicole Smith over the past couple of months, she does not make a move without Howard K. Stern. Look, they are glued at the hip there.

LEVIN: By the way, glued at the hip and we are just this second posting a story that Anna Nicole Smith may be glued at the hip in the streets, because a judge has ruled basically she didn`t show up in court for a hearing this week. She is in default on -- over this whole thing on whether she has a right to be in the house she is in. And she has just gotten a 48-hour notice to get the heck out of that house by the owner.

HAMMER: So there is no good news for Anna Nicole Smith today. And with everything that`s going on with the judge and the paternity test possibly being forced upon her, wouldn`t it make sense for her to just go through with it now and put this to rest once and for all, unless she has something to hide?

LEVIN: Well, unless she has something to hide and that may be an answer here. It is hard for me to jump into Anna Nicole`s mind, but you certainly raise one possibility, which is, she doesn`t necessarily want to handle the truth here, if that is the truth.

HAMMER: But Let`s move on to our next case, involving Madonna. This thing is still going on. A judge has actually ruled that the human rights groups -- and I`m talking about 67 human rights group, which is an astonishing number to me, that are getting involved with this thing, to help decides whether Madonna is fit to adopt a Malawan toddler. Sixty seven Harvey. The dad has been remarried. He`s come out -- even said to our own Jeff Koinange, from CNN, that he is happy about the adoption. What is really going on here?

LEVIN: Well, this is not about the father, whether he wants her to adopt or doesn`t want her to adopt. These human rights organizations are saying, look, we want to be able to help the judge investigate whether Madonna cut corners in this adoption process. And the judge is saying, yes, these human rights groups can get involved. They are basically saying, you know, it is really wonderful that celebrities want to adopt children, but they want it done by the book so celebrities don`t get this kind of special treatment and can kind of spirit kids out of certain countries.

HAMMER: Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ.com, thanks for cutting through it all for us Harvey.

LEVIN: By A.J.

ANDERSON: Oscar nominated actress Kate Winslet has a message for all those magazine editors who retouch magazine covers. She is not playing the game. When I sat down with Kate for her starring role in the new romantic comedy "The Holiday," we talked about Hollywood`s obsession with body image and how she reacted to seeing her own image altered on a magazine cover.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON: We`re used to seeing you in the dramas and the period films. Is this a refreshing change of pace here?

WINSLET: It was, it most definitely was. It was lovely to play somebody who is just such a good person. You know, she isn`t malicious. She is just looking for Mr. Right and she is the kind of person who, if you met her, you would think, I really want to be your friend, you know. She is just a good girl.

ANDERSON: You`ve been very vocal about your criticism of the obsession to be super, super skinny in Hollywood. In fact, in Style Magazine you recently said, it seems to me they are breeding a whole new generation of anorexics.

WINSLET: There you go.

ANDERSON: Do you think it`s gotten that serious, that bad?

WINSLET: Yes, I do. I absolutely do. I think it is completely out of control, I really do. And do you know what the sad thing is? There isn`t anything anybody can do about it.

ANDERSON: Why not? What can be done? Because people are wasting away.

WINSLET: I know. I don`t know what it is. I mean, I think it is just a lot to do with the way the media obsess over this and keep talking about it and keep putting it in magazines. That`s the thing that young girls look at. I mean, we do not have magazines in our house because, you know, this is the stuff that children are being exposed to. And, you know, kids should be just kids and allowed to be kids for as long as they have the right to be. And so it does frighten me. But I mean, please, you know, if you have any suggestions, tell me.

ANDERSON: I`m at a total loss. And you mentioned the magazines. You have experienced the photo retouching, the digital manipulation, and it made you angry.

WINSLET: Yes. I mean, the truth is, you know, being on magazine covers and doing photo shoots is actually, on the one hand, really enjoyable. It is a lot of fun, and it is very much a part of my job. Now, you know, I know that images of women on the front of magazine covers have been retouched for years and years and years, decades we`re talking about. But there was one particular situation in which my image was so fundamentally altered that it was like, no, no, this is going against my morals here, and I`ve had nothing to do with this. And I felt it was very important to come out and say that, because I didn`t want people to think that that was how I looked. It was -- they honestly made me look a two and not a six or an eight or whatever. And I just didn`t like it. I felt very kind of -- I felt used actually.

ANDERSON: It`s admirable that you stood up for that.

WINSLET: Well, you know, life`s too short.

ANDERSON: And you`re so comfortable in your own skin. It is really refreshing. In fact, you have been nude in a number of films. And I heard that for Little Children, tell me if I`m right about this, that you did not want to tone up, tone up, tone up to a certain extent, because you wanted people to see that, hey, this is me, I`m not perfect.

WINSLET: Well, exactly right. I mean, I do not believe that nudity on film should look completely picture-perfect just because it is on a film. You know, that`s just my opinion of it. That`s how I feel about it. But also, you know, it was about the character. I mean, I`m playing a woman who is very much less than perfect, and she is a mother. You know, she doesn`t go to a gym. She wouldn`t know the meaning of the word yoga. And so I thought, well, it doesn`t make sense that I would have some kind of super fit, perfect body, just because I`m in a movie. You know, it`s about being real and being that person. And also, yes, I mean, I am in normal shape and it is important to me to kind of say, look, you know, it`s OK. Go have a burger.

ANDERSON: You can.

WINSLET: Yes, exactly.

ANDERSON: You can feel great about it. And there is a theme in this movie about that as well, when Cameron`s character says, I just want to eat carbs.

(CROSS TALK)

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: She is so impressive. Such a strong and really smart person. And Kate Winslet also told me that she is taking the next year off to spend time with her children, Mia and Joe. You can catch Kate in the holiday in theaters December 8th.

LEVIN: An arrest outside the Tonight Show studios, we`re going to tell you which guest on the show got arrested and why. That`s next.

ANDERSON: Plus, is Borat to blame for the break up of Pam Anderson and Kid Rock`s marriage? We`re going to tell you the word on the street, plus what Pam says, coming up.

HAMMER: Also, for the kids of famous parents, childhood isn`t like it is for the rest of us. Do the children of superstars ever have a chance at a normal life? We`re looking for answers, and that is still ahead.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Tomorrow on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, if you blinked, you probably missed them. We`re talking about the shortest celebrity marriages ever. From Rene and Kenny to Pam and Kid Rock, the I do`s that led to quick, I don`t`s. That`s tomorrow.

ANDERSON: Snoop Dogg`s rap sheet just keeps getting longer. Last night Snoop was arrested on handgun and drug charges outside of NBC studios following a performance on the Tonight Show. He was released on bail early this morning. Police say the charges include being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possessing cocaine, and transporting Marijuana. He is said to be arraigned January 11, but Snoop is also due in court in a few weeks relating to another arrest on gun and drug charges.

HAMMER: So, when you have a last name like Cruise or Pit-Jolie, do you ever have a shot at a normal life? We are looking into stars and their kids, coming up next. We`ll also have this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Popped me right across the face enough that my nose bleed. My brother actually tells me a story about how dad threw a bowl -- it was the same trip, and dad threw a bowl at his head.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON: Richard Pryor`s daughter opens up about her father`s violence and that infamous night when he set himself on fire. Rain Pryor, she`s coming up in the interview you will see right here, only on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

HAMMER: Plus, what`s the deal, is Borat to blame for the breakup of Pam Anderson and Kid Rock`s marriage? We`re going to tell you the word on the street, plus we`re going to tell you what Pam is saying about this, still ahead on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(NEWS BREAK)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT for Wednesday night. It is 30 minutes past the hour. I`m A.J. Hammer. We are in New York.

ANDERSON: Yes, we are. I`m Brooke Anderson, and this is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show.

You know, A.J., Lindsay Lohan has a reputation of being a girl who likes to go out and have a good time.

HAMMER: Yes, she does.

ANDERSON: .being a party girl. But she`s saying everybody`s got the totally wrong idea, the wrong impression .

HAMMER: Really?

ANDERSON: .of her. Yes, Lindsay Lohan defending herself, coming up, in her own words.

HAMMER: Also, Brooke, is it possible that we all have the wrong idea about Paris Hilton? Is it possible we should have sympathy for Paris Hilton?

Coming up, we`re going to take you inside the House of Hilton. There`s sex, there`s scandal, and we`re going to talk to the guy who did some investigating to find out exactly.

ANDERSON: Do we really want to go inside?

(CROSSTALK)

ANDERSON: But first, the most comprehensive coverage of the Britney Spears-Kevin Federline divorce shocker continues now. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT`s got Kevin Federline last major television interview before learning Britney was giving him the boot.

Tonight, did Kevin Federline get sucker punched with the news? Well, just judge for yourself.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: It seems that so many couples in Hollywood have problems. What advice would you give them?

KEVIN FEDERLINE, ENTERTAINER: Well, you know, I don`t know what it is. Like, I`ve - I`ve sat and actually tried to think about it, and - and figure it out because it`s - it`s such - I mean, it`s tough. I mean, plain and simple, especially if you`re in the media everyday.

ANDERSON (voice-over): Oh boy, you can say that again. That`s Kevin Federline, the former backup dancer, aspiring rapper and now future ex-Mr. Britney Spears talking to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT in his last big TV interview before the divorce filings.

I sat down with K-Fed in what was, at the time, a no-holds-barred discussion about his life with Britney.

FEDERLINE: The only one that I can really go to that understands any of it.

ANDERSON (on camera): So your best friend (INAUDIBLE)

FEDERLINE: Definitely.

ANDERSON (voice-over): It`s fair to say that best friends is now probably a bit of a stretch.

HARVEY LEVIN, MANAGING EDITOR, TMZ.COM: He did not see this coming because she didn`t really tell him.

ANDERSON: Britney dropped a bombshell Monday night by deciding to kick K-Fed to the curb and ask for sole custody of their two young boys.

LEVIN: She dropkicked him. And, you know, I think from this point of view, he was stunned, because he thought this marriage was just going fine.

ANDERSON: He really did. K-Fed repeatedly told me, just days before Britney filed for divorce, that his marriage was hunky dory.

FEDERLINE: I - I love her to death, you know? It`s - it`s - it`s crazy. It`s something that I can`t explain.

ANDERSON: OK. So that`s what K-Fed was thinking. As for Britney - well, as Borat would say.

SASHA BARON COHEN, COMEDIAN: Not so much.

LEVIN: She was really upset in this marriage because he was disengaged. And that was the problem here. And ultimately, she just got sick and tired of it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Britney!

ANDERSON: SHOWBIZ TONIGHT obtained this video of Britney Tuesday night - the same day she filed for divorce. She bundled up, rounding the world-famous ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza. A little shaky on her skates, but as far as we can tell, happy as can be.

JULIE JORDAN, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: After Britney filed for divorce, she went out on the town. She went to dinner with friends, she went shopping at the Gap and then she went ice skating at Rockefeller Center. She`s not at home feeling sorry for herself.

ANDERSON: You got that right. Look how smiley Britney was Monday night at "The Late Show With David Letterman."

(CHEERING)

BRITNEY SPEARS, ENTERTAINER: I was - I`m in town, and I`m such a huge fan.

DAVID LETTERMAN, HOST, "THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN": Oh..

ANDERSON: She made a surprise appearance, showing off her post-baby body, and sporting a trendy new hairdo - no mention of a marital meltdown.

But had we looked at the tape with a fine-tooth comb, we would have realized that the pop princess wasn`t wearing her wedding ring. We didn`t notice at the time, but maybe Kevin did.

JORDAN: When all this was happening, Kevin was in Toronto promoting his new album. And those who saw him said that, you know, he was not about K-Fed, he was about K-Dad. He was shopping for baby clothes. He was very subdued. He was missing his family. You know, but he seems realized depressed, almost on the verge of tears.

ANDERSON: A much different Kevin than I spoke with. Wearing his wedding ring, he was all smiles when he talked to me about his wife and kids. He told me all those rumors about his excessive partying and their marriage being on the rocks are just that -rumors.

FEDERLINE: You see all the negative stuff, but, I mean, you - everybody`s got to know that, like, behind closed doors, everything is - is - you know, is great. It`s not always what they say it is, you know? I mean, we - we - we`re people, too. We`re - we`re happy behind closed doors. We play with the kids and run around the house, you know? And - and we do stuff that normal people do.

ANDERSON: That was Kevin just days before getting dumped.

Even though Britney skipped out on several promotional events for his album release, including his big New York City party, he just didn`t seem to see the divorce coming, and may have found out about it when TMZ broke the story.

LEVIN: I`m told that he found out about the divorce when TMZ published the story. So it`s not like Britney Spears was saying, Honey, it`s not working out. She was saying, you know, Next.

ANDERSON: It`s hard to know what`s going to be next for Kevin, who just days ago sang Britney`s praises to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

FEDERLINE: I`m - I`m like her biggest fan as - as a husband.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: And, you know, A.J., K-Fed told me that he wanted to be the breadwinner. He didn`t want Britney to have to be the breadwinner. He wanted to support her and support his family and give to them what they`ve, you know, given him.

So that`s what he was doing, working towards this music career with this new CD.

HAMMER: Well, with - with that new CD dead on arrival - I - what was it like, 5,000 copies sold? I don`t think that`s going to happening. And he`s certainly not going to be paying alimony.

Now I understand you - you`re all chummy with the guy now, because in addition to sitting down with him that day, later that night, you were hanging out at his listening party, where they were playing that CD.

(CROSSTALK)

ANDERSON: Well, one thing we did not see was Britney Spears at this CD listening party on Friday night, hours after I had spoken to him. And I thought that was really odd, considering the fact that he had just told me that they were each - on - each other`s biggest fan, each other`s biggest cheerleader.

But no, we didn`t see her all night. He was hanging out with friend. Seemed to be in good spirits though.

HAMMER: Did - did you get to hear any Britney music, or was it .

ANDERSON: We did.

HAMMER: .pretty much all Kevin Federline?

ANDERSON: We - yes, the DJ did play one of her songs, and everybody went crazy, you know, elbowing Kevin. Like, Kevin, it`s Britney, this is exciting. Everyone was singing, dancing along. But Kevin was pretty much stone-faced. He.

HAMMER: Oh really?

ANDERSON: Yes, he didn`t seem like he was having a good time. And he had been rapping all night, rapping along to his own songs.

So it - clearly there was a little bit of trouble in paradise that.

(CROSSTALK)

HAMMER: .perfect as you said it was.

ANDERSON: Exactly.

And, you know, Britney`s divorce is the big news of the day, and not just here on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. This morning on "The View," Rosie O`Donnell started the show saying she was overjoyed. And Elizabeth Hasselbeck says she was shocked and devastated. You know, it seemed like they were talking about the election.

But then take a look at what happened.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ROSIE O`DONNELL, "THE VIEW": It`s the biggest news in the country, ladies and gentlemen. Britney Spears is leaving K-Fed!

(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)

O`DONNELL: Let me just say on behalf of a happy America, welcome back Britney! We love you!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON: Rosie says she just couldn`t resist, and that she was cooking up the confetti bit all night.

HAMMER: Well, we want you to know that we want to know what you think. For our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT "Question of the Day," it`s kind of like our own exit poll going on here. ANDERSON: She is known as the most downloaded woman on the planet: Cindy Margolis. She`s 40, fabulous, and now for the very first time, she`s posed nude.

This mother of three takes it all off in the December issue of "Playboy," and opens up about why she waited until now to pose nude, and about her heartbreaking battle with infertility.

Cindy Margolis is with me now in New York.

Cindy, great to see you.

CINDY MARGOLIS, "PLAYBOY" COVER MODEL: Thank you.

ANDERSON: You look lovely.

MARGOLIS: Oh, thanks, Brooke. So do you.

ANDERSON: Always - why thank you very much.

Now I want to know: you are the most downloaded woman on the planet.

MARGOLIS: I love the way you say that.

ANDERSON: Well, it`s - it`s - it`s huge.

When you were given that title, did it creep you out at all that, Hey, a lot of people could have you on their desktops?

MARGOLIS: No.

ANDERSON: (INAUDIBLE) no.

MARGOLIS: No, I thought it was great to kind of be the pioneer of the Internet, like the first person on TV or radio to go down in history as being, you know, the first model to be on the Internet I think is kind of cool, and the Guinness Book of World Records. This is something I can tell my grandchildren about.

So, no, I was very proud to actually hold that title. Because, of course, today, everyone and your dog has a Web site. So - but, you know, back when I started in 96, no one what a download or, you know, the Internet was.

So, you know, it wasn`t really Al Gore, it was me that invented the Internet.

ANDERSON: You were the pioneer.

MARGOLIS: I was the genius.

ANDERSON: And, you know, all those years, you had a lot of sexy poses, but you never took off your clothes until now. Age 40, you took off your clothes for "Playboy." Which by the way, you - you don`t look 40 years old.

But tell me, why now?

MARGOLIS: Oh, well, that is true. You know, to be named the most downloaded, for keeping my clothes on, I always prided myself for being the only one who didn`t take it off. And of course, my Web site was, you know, girl next door and wholesome and sexy and anyone could come see it.

But, you know, I`ve really been close with "Playboy" over the years, and Mr. Hefner`s been always great, and he`s called me every year, and I`ve graciously declined. But when he called me on my 40th birthday to wish me a happy birthday, and to still make me an offer, I was, like, Wow, he still wants me at 40?

And I just thought that was great. That was an empowering moment, you know? And I thought, if I was going to do it before for gratuitous reasons or money or, you know, for my career, I would have done it, you know, when I was 25 and looked better, before my three children, and, you know, all that stuff.

But I just thought, You know what? Now it`s only something that`s inspirational; that you can have three children, be married and still be sexy, confident and pose for "Playboy."

ANDERSON: Doing it for different reasons.

MARGOLIS: Yes.

ANDERSON: And some of the proceeds from the sale.

MARGOLIS: Yes.

ANDERSON: .of this issue go to your charity.

MARGOLIS: Exactly.

ANDERSON: .and also to Resolve, a national infertility association.

MARGOLIS: Correct.

ANDERSON: And that really hit home for you, because in 1998, you were named one of the most beautiful people in the world on the same you found out from your doctor that you were infertile.

(CROSSTALK)

ANDERSON: It must have been devastating.

(CROSSTALK)

MARGOLIS: In part, and that`s why I try to, you know - posing for "Playboy" is actually posing for a purpose. And, yes, all the proceeds will go to help people have their miracle child. Because I was infertile and I went through in vitro fertilization seven times. And it`s so heartbreaking to everyone out there who thinks they`re going through it alone. And I`m just trying to make it more mainstream so we can talk about it. Because half the time, it`s actually a male problem as well.

So if you`re having trouble.

(CROSSTALK)

MARGOLIS: .don`t realize it. And as a woman, if you want a child, and that`s all you want in your heart and you can`t have one, it`s - you know, it`s devastating. And your self-esteem is so low, and here, it looked to the world, like, Oh, you know, she looks great. But no, on the inside I was dying. And you know, I hit rock bottom. And I just, you know, thought, Oh, my husband`s going to leave me, and I can`t have children. And it was just such a devastating time for me.

And as I said, it took me seven times before I was blessed with my son, Nicholas (ph), who is now four years old. And I was a high-risk pregnancy. And after that, I wasn`t able to conceive. And my beautiful twins were born via surrogate. And people don`t understand surrogacy, and so I just want to speak out about it, because it`s so important.

ANDERSON: And you`re writing about a book about your struggles.

MARGOLIS: I am.

ANDERSON: Coming out next year.

MARGOLIS: Coming out in October.

ANDERSON: And you say one of the things that - that hurts people who struggle with these problems is Hollywood. It - it adds to the shame that people feel.

MARGOLIS: It`s true.

ANDERSON: Why do you say that?

MARGOLIS: Well, it`s - because you turn on, you know, the TV and it looks like everyone in Hollywood is getting pregnant, and you`re 45 and you`re 50 and you`re having twins, or some macho celebrity is 60 and, you know, everyone`s getting pregnant. And you`re at home thinking, you know, What is wrong with me?

And here I am in Los Angeles in my fertility office, and there`s A- list celebrities, you know, signing confidentiality agreements. And they will come up to me, like, Why are you talking about this? I`m like, Because you`re not. You need to speak out about it. It`s not something that we need to hide or be ashamed of. I mean, this is having our precious baby.

So I just want to everyone to know there are options: fertility, surrogacy, adoption. It`s so important that we speak out about it, because it affects millions and millions of Americans every year. It`s nothing to be ashamed about.

However you can have your baby, there`s options out there. But if it comes via FedEx, at least you have your beautiful, miracle baby.

ANDERSON: What a great message you have. And you seem like a very loving, devoted mother.

MARGOLIS: Yes.

ANDERSON: Cindy Margolis, thank you so much.

MARGOLIS: Thank you for having me on.

ANDERSON: And the December issue of "Playboy" magazine featuring Cindy is on newsstands now.

HAMMER: Well, you`ve heard of a bridge over troubled water. But what about trouble over a bridge? There`s a bit of a brouhaha brewing in West Virginia that made us say, "That`s Ridiculous!" And that`s next.

ANDERSON: Plus, is Lindsay Lohan really all about partying? Lindsay opens up about her reputation for being a dance-all-night, late-to-the-set party girl, coming up.

HAMMER: And it`s everything you ever wanted to know about Paris Hilton, and probably some stuff you never wanted to know. We`ve got the guy who wrote a tell-all book about Paris and her family, on the way.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s most provocative entertainment news show.

It`s time now for yet another story that made us say, "That`s Ridiculous!"

In Huntington, West Virginia, some residents are seeing red over a pink bridge. Take a look at this. The mayor gave a guy permission to paint a bridge pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Seems like such a good idea.

But not everybody is thrilled with the pink bridge. And while these naysayers are saying they`re not a guest - against breast-cancer awareness, the bridge is historic, and the mayor really shouldn`t have let it be painted without asking the public`s permission.

Turns out one guy was so angry he got out of his car and he actually threatened to beat the painter up. Are you kidding me? It`s just a bridge.

Getting violent over a pink bridge? Now "That`s Ridiculous!"

ANDERSON: Lindsay Lohan says people who think she`s just a party girl have it all wrong. Lohan was on Oprah promoting her new movie "Bobby." She told Oprah Winfrey that the tabloids missed the mark in the way they portray her.

Take a look at what she said.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OPRAH WINFREY, TALK SHOW HOST: So tell me this - you have this huge reputation for being a big party girl.

LINDSAY LOHAN, ENTERTAINER: Oh, I hate that (INAUDIBLE).

WINFREY: Is that true, or not?

LOHAN: No. No. I - I - I mean, I`ve been acting my whole life. This is what I love to do. And I`m very lucky and blessed to be able to do that.

I`m 20 years old. Is it a crime to go and, you know, dancing with friends? It`s not.

WINFREY: Yes.

LOHAN: It`s - I - I have a life, and I have my family and I have work. And I have those three things.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANDERSON: Lindsay`s "Bobby" co-star Emilio Estevez was also on the show. He said Lindsay was great to work with, always on time and that the media focus on the negative because it sells.

HAMMER: Well, Paris Hilton is yet another celebrity who sells lots and lots of magazines because she`s almost always out at clubs or posing on a red carpet.

But is Paris really the person everyone thinks she is? In this new book, "House of Hilton," Jerry Oppenheimer uncovers the crazy details all about Paris` parents, Kathy and Rick, and some famous celebrity connection that will absolutely shock you.

Author Jerry Oppenheimer joining me in New York.

Nice to see you.

JERRY OPPENHEIMER, AUTHOR, "HOUSE OF HILTON": Thank you. Thank you for having me.

HAMMER: So you got to straighten this out for me, Jerry, because over the years, we`ve seen all of the nonsense that surrounds Paris Hilton. In the back of our heads, we`re all thinking, it doesn`t really matter what she does, what kind of trouble she gets into, she`s always got that Hilton money, that big inheritance to fall back on.

What you uncovered is the fact that that`s not so true. She`s not a big heiress that we all make her out to be.

OPPENHEIMER: Yes. The media and Paris herself and her family has made her the heiress with millions of dollars coming to her at some point in time.

What I discovered in 18 months of research into this book was the fact that, in fact, she is not the heiress we all think she is. Most of the Hilton fortune was put into a foundation many, many years ago by her great- grandfather, the eccentric hotel empire builder.

So Paris really has to work. As - as one of her family members told me, in the Hilton family, she has to work her tush off.

HAMMER: Yes.

OPPENHEIMER: Because if she wants to live the Hilton hot lifestyle, it`s not coming from any great endowment from anyone.

HAMMER: Well it`s interesting, because we talk here on this show that she is one of these people who is just famous for the sake of being famous. In fact, it was her great-grandfather who said, Nobody deserves anything unless they work for a living.

OPPENHEIMER: Exactly.

HAMMER: And despite the fact that she is getting slammed all the time for should - just being out there making money for waving around on the red carpet, she is working her tush off. She - she does have a perfume line, and she has her music. And she`s making a lot of money doing all that.

So does she kind of get a bad rap?

OPPENHEIMER: No. In fact, in a way, Paris has inherited her - her great-grandfather`s entrepreneurial spirit.

But once again, she has to do this. She`s an exhibitionist. She`s been pushed out there by a very aggressive, ambitious stage mother. Her mother, Kathy Hilton, had been a child star herself, had been a model.

One of the things that the world doesn`t really know: she was taught by her mother, marry rich and become famous. Well, she wasn`t bankable to become famous, so at the age 20 in 1979, she married Rick Hilton, married into the Hilton dynasty. And taught her daughter the same things she was taught by her mother, which is get out there, be a celebrity, be a star.

And sadly, Paris was forced into a role that in any other family, she might not have been pushed into.

HAMMER: Well, yes. And being a star for maybe the wrong reasons, in some cases.

You mentioned being an exhibitionist. I got to ask you about this, because obviously Paris has been caught up in this scandal or that scandal, whether it`s been the car accidents, or - or this fight in a nightclub.

The most infamous of all the scandals was that sex tape that got out there with Rick Solomon. Now you uncovered that her parents are actually proud of the sex tape. Do I have that right? Because that sounds nuts to me.

OPPENHEIMER: Absolutely correct. Everything Paris has done, including the sex tape, they approve of.

Paris` parents wanted her to have this fame. They - they moved from Los Angeles to New York, and at 14 and 15 years old, they put her in the nightclubs. They allowed her to walk around the way she`s been photographed walking around by the paparazzi. And she made the tape. And once that tape came out, it launched her. She became the "It" girl, the new millennium, $20 million rolled in last year from all these different endorsements she has and all these products.

All because she appeared performing sex in a - in a video. And they - they find no problem with it. I`m sure they weren`t thrilled.

HAMMER: That`s so strange to me. I`m sorry.

OPPENHEIMER: It`s a bizarre group of people.

HAMMER: You know, not - not - not only one person has suggested in the past that, you know, maybe she`s not the - the brightest bulb in the lamp.

But do we have her wrong as far as that`s concerned?

OPPENHEIMER: I think Paris has three main attributes: she knows how to get attention; she knows how to spin the media like a pro; and the exhibitionism. All that today makes a celebrity.

I mean, you - you have on your show Lindsay Lohan and people like that. That`s the new celebrity. And Paris was the first for the new millennium.

HAMMER: Jerry Oppenheimer, I appreciate you sharing all of this with us.

OPPENHEIMER: Thank you.

HAMMER: And her parents are proud.

The book is called "House of Hilton." There it is. You`ll find it in stores now.

ANDERSON: Last night, we asked you to vote on our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT "Question of the Day."

"Stars on the Campaign Trail: Do they influence how you vote?" Four percent of you say yes; 96 percent of you say no.

Here`s some of the e-mails we received:

Eric writes, "Celebrities are always their ideas. This leads people to simply vote against whatever they are campaigning for."

And Sarah says, "I am frightened to think that anyone would look to a celebrity to make important decisions, such as voting."

Thank you for e-mails.

Hang tight; SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is coming right back.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
