A.J. HAMMER, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT ANCHOR: Rosie O`Donnell is at it again. This time she`s taking on Simon, Paula and Randy of "American Idol." I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.

VARGAS: And I`m Sibila Vargas in Hollywood. And we know just how much Britney Spears is really worth, Jennifer Aniston too. Hollywood`s richest women coming up in just a few minutes.
HAMMER: But first tonight, Lindsay Lohan reportedly out of control and now definitely in rehab. Lindsey Lohan`s sudden decision to check into rehab is raising all kinds of questions tonight. Why did she do it? Was she really in such bad shape? And what led to her wake-up call? And is this the beginning of the end for Hollywood`s young party girls? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT goes looking for answers.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
HAMMER (voice-over): Lindsay Lohan is said to have checked into this posh Los Angeles rehab facility, Wonderland Center, Wednesday afternoon. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT on top of this story, getting this statement from the 20- years-old`s publicist right after she arrived for treatment: "I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health. I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time."
HARVEY LEVIN, TMZ.COM: She is in an inpatient rehab facility in the Los Angeles area, a very swanky one I might add, and she is going to be there seven days minimum to detox, and then they are going to have to determine how much additional work she needs.
IAN DREW, "US WEEKLY": Well, everyone is kind of joking that Wonderland is very close to Hide, one of her favorite night spots. So Lindsey definitely chose a facility close to all the action. She didn`t want to be too far away.
HAMMER: Lindsey`s stint in rehab comes just one month after she confirmed to "People Magazine" that she had been attending alcoholics anonymous meetings for the past year; "I was going out too much and I knew that," she told "People," "and I have more to live for than that." The AA meetings explain this picture SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has obtained, taken on November 1st.
That red pin you see here is given out at meetings when a member has 90 days of sobriety under their belt.
LEVIN: Clearly her AA meetings weren`t working, so she needed to take this additional step. I can tell you we have published a story about what happened a couple weeks ago right after she had this apendetectomy. She was at a bar downing shooters and even went into the bathroom and drank.
HAMMER: 2006, a real downer of a year for Lindsey. If she tried to keep her personal life from becoming public, she wasn`t doing a good job of it.
DREW: Lindsey had a lot of drama last year. I mean, one of the worst moments was when she got into a car accident on Robertson Boulevard, outside of the Ivy. There were many other instances where Lindsey just should have probably stayed home but didn`t.
LEVIN: Lindsay Lohan was a train wreck in 2006, from car accidents to partying to drinking to doing all sorts of things. She was a mess. At least now she`s trying to get help. She`s had a tough time.
HAMMER: Case in point, the flare-up during filming with "Georgia Rule," with Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman. The head of the studio that made the film, Morgan Creek Productions, fired off this letter in July after she skipped work. She claims she was suffering from dehydration and exhaustion. The studio didn`t buy it.
SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has it for you in black and white: "we are all aware that your on-going all night heavy partying is the real reason for your so called exhaustion. We refuse to accept bogus excuses for your behavior."
DREW: The producers actually wrote her a letter that got leaked showing that she had been out too much, had not been professional, had not been on time for work. And that just escalated. That was probably one of the most public outings of her partying being out of control.
HAMMER: SHOWBIZ TONIGHT caught up with Lindsey in November as she was doing press for the movie "Bobby." We asked her about all those reports of excessive partying.
VARGAS: Do you think you have gotten a fair shake?
LINDSEY LOHAN, ACTRESS: People can feel bad. You can go through things. I`ve gone through so much. I`ve dealt with so much, but I`m thankful for it, because, you know, you can`t -- I don`t regret anything.
HAMMER: And while Lindsey`s sobriety and her career hang in the balance, in Hollywood rehab isn`t always the end of the road.
DREW: We really don`t know yet which way Lindsey is going to go. She could become a massive star and just put all this behind her after going through a rough patch, or this could be the end of her. We just don`t know yet.

HAMMER: Well, Lindsey was filming a new movie, a thriller called "I Know Who Killed Me." There were several reports floating around, saying production had been halted because of Lohan`s appendix surgery and now the rehab stint. Well, Lindsey`s publicist told us those reports simply not true.
And Lindsay Lohan is certainly not the only young Hollywood party girl struggling with substance abuse. Lindsey Lohan checks herself into rehab at a treatment facility. We have stars like Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie seemingly letting substances get them into trouble. Both having been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. Britney Spears has raised eyebrows for her partying ways with, of course, two young kids at home.
Joining me tonight in Hollywood Howard Bragman, founder of the 15 Minutes Public Relations Agency. He is the crisis manager who most recently has been working with super model Naomi Campbell, and KISS FM Los Angeles personality JoJo Wright of JoJo on the Radio. Guys, I appreciate you both being with us tonight.
Howard, let me start with you. You`re the inside guy in Hollywood. Is Lindsey going into rehab, going to be a wake-up call for all these party girls who are seemingly going nuts out there, or is this basically par for the course in that town?
HOWARD BRAGMAN, 15 MINUTES PUBLIC RELATIONS: I think it`s a little bit of both. I mean, you know, in Des Moines, Iowa rehab is a big deal. Here, not everyone, a lot of people go into rehab. But I also think if they don`t use it as a wake-up call, they are doing themselves a disservice. This is a girl who has everything to live for, great success ahead of her. And she`s her own worst enemy right now and this is her chance.
HAMMER: And she seems to be putting the right spin on it, issuing the statement saying she`s doing it for very personal reasons. JoJo, what do you think, could it not just be a personal move, but really an essential career move for her at this point?
JOJO WRIGHT, KISS-LOS ANGELES: I`m not saying that she is not going through some issues, and, you know, she doesn`t have a problem, but when you really think about it, and maybe it`s my own little conspiracy theory, but going to rehab is some of the best PR you could ever get. I mean, if you need somebody to talk about you, you go to rehab.
In rehab -- I used to think that when you go into rehab you get locked into a room, they take all your gadgets away from you. You know, it`s hard work, you go through rough times and I`m sure it is. But I have had friends, some famous friends who I won`t name for privacy reasons, but they have gone into rehab. I sent them a text message and I thought I was going to hear back from them, say, in three weeks, maybe a month. And I get the text message back in like 20 minutes, I`m doing fine. What`s going on?
I`m thinking are you at rehab or are you at Disneyland.
HAMMER: So it sounds like kind of a casual affair from what you`re saying?
WRIGHT: That`s my take.
HAMMER: And Howard, you were saying Lindsey has everything to live for. Nobody is denying she`s a talented actress. She`s worked with some big-time stars, I mean, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep. But when you look at everything that`s been going on with her, and as I said, you`re out there in Hollywood, you`re inside with all the stars, is she kind of on the verge of being a joke in that town because of her antics outside of work?
BRAGMAN: I don`t even think that the joke part is the issue. I think the issue is substance abuse and insurability. If the producers of a movie can`t get insurance on their actor because of substance problems, then that actor can`t star in the movie. I think that`s the bigger issue. Also what went on with her last movie, when the head of the studio sent a letter that was leaked.
She has to understand that if she continues this kind of behavior people aren`t going to want to work with her. Her quote going to go down. And she`s going to become a footnote. I don`t think she wants to do that and I think she`s got too much talent for that.
HAMMER: No, you do not want to become a footnote in that town. JoJo, there`s no question that all the Hollywood starlets pay attention to one another. They are looking at what each other is wearing, how little the other one is eating. Do you think with Lindsey, going into rehab, that maybe the Britneys and the Paris of the world will actually pay attention and get their acts together as a result?
WRIGHT: No way, there`s no chance, because I think it`s, more or less, how can you top that one? Not that they want to go into rehab. And I need to clarify something, rehab, you know, there`s certain elements of it that aren`t fun. You`re trying to quit an addiction, but it`s great PR. So the next one is going to look at it and say hey, I need to top that. I need to get my name in there once again. In Hollywood it just a big PR game. It`s a business and the best way to get people to talk about you is, once again, how do you get their attention? Something good happens, nobody talks about it. You bring up a rehab type situation, people are on it and here we are going at it again.
HAMMER: Let me ask you, Howard, because you are king in the PR game, is it not uncommon, I`m not asking about yourself, but is it not uncommon for a publicist to instruct their client to go into rehab just for this very reason, because it is good PR?
BRAGMAN: You know, when I tell my clients they need to clean up their act and go to rehab, it`s for a problem. It`s not good publicity. Lindsey Lohan, you know, anything she does gets publicity. This girl can be on the front of virtually any magazine, any newspaper, any day she wishes. This is not good press for her, and this is not a good moment, and I don`t -- you know, everybody thinks we are manipulating and say you`ve got to get into rehab to get press. We`re not. If I get together with the team that surrounds the star and say it`s time for rehab, it`s time to look at this problem, it`s to really solve a problem and it is serious.
HAMMER: I appreciate you setting the record straight for us on that, Howard, and I appreciate you both joining us tonight. We do wish the best for Lindsey, whatever she`s going through. JoJo Wright, Howard Bragman, thanks for being with us.

This time it`s someone or some people even bigger than Donald Trump. She is attacking "American Idol" judges Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, and especially Paula Abdul.
Rosie is disgusted by the way they`ve been so mean to the contestants. Take a look at today`s "The View."

SIMON COWELL, "AMERICAN IDOL": You look a little odd. Your dancing is terrible. The singing was horrendous. And you look like one of those creatures that live in the jungle with those massive eyes. What are they called? Bush babies.
RANDY JACKSON, "AMERICAN IDOL": Simon, you`re crazy.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Randy, it`s OK. Paula, it`s OK. Simon, you are going to say what you are going to say, but you know what? That`s your opinion. You are entitled to it.
COWELL: It`s a pretty good opinion.
PAULA ABDUL, "AMERICAN IDOL": I think you`re pretty awesome.

ROSIE O`DONNELL, "THE VIEW": So that`s compassion for you, isn`t it, folks? Isn`t that what America thinks is entertainment? To make fun of someone`s physical appearance. And then when they leave the room, laugh hysterically at them, three millionaires, one probably intoxicated.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: But doesn`t Paula realize -- oh, my god.
O`DONNELL: But I firmly believe that if they put on the people who came closest to making it, and you got to hear for two hours last night amazing singers who are just almost there, people would tune in too. I don`t think America likes to watch people be ridiculed and made fun of and called that they are ugly monkeys or that they are too fat or they are a degenerate.

O`DONNELL: You know, it`s an absurd concept that this is what`s tolerable now as consumption in America for mass media.

VARGAS: Well, they did seem pretty cruel. Now, about Rosie`s thing, Paula was probably intoxicated, she`s referring to a bizarre TV interview where Paula seemed really out of it and had many wondering was she drunk or on drugs? Paula has soundly denied that. She says she was confused by some technical difficulties.
HAMMER: Now it is time to blow the lid off of the secrets of Hollywood`s richest women. Forbes.com has just come up with their list of the 20 richest women in entertainment. Now the top five include Oprah Winfrey, of course, Forbes says she is worth 1.5 billion dollars; Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, one billion bucks; Martha Stewart`s in there with 638 million, followed by Madonna, 325 million. Rounding out the top five, Celine Dionne with a cool quarter billion dollars.
And the Forbes 20 Richest women in entertainment TV special will air this Saturday on E. Joining us tonight in New York, Kiri Blakeley, senior reporter for Forbes Magazine. Kiri, let`s start of our list with Britney Spears, making the news an awful lot lately. She`s only 25 years old, number 12 on your list. She`s getting a lot of attention for her partying, spending a lot of time being a mommy. Not working so much, but she has earned a lot of money over the years. I see here she`s worth 100 million.
KIRI BLAKELEY, FORBES MAGAZINE: Yes, and the thing about Britney is she going to take a few years off and have some kids and get divorced and party, because she has made so much money over the course of her career, which has been a relatively short career. But her tours sell out like crazy, her albums continue to sell. And, of course, she has some very lucrative endorsement deals with the likes of Pepsi and such, and she has a perfume. So she`s done very well for herself in the short amount of time that she`s had.
HAMMER: We don`t need to cry for Britney. All right, let`s talk about some of the actresses on your list, because there certainly are a lot of them. Julia Roberts, certainly one of the highest paid actresses, even when she hasn`t done much in the last few years, in at number eight.
BLAKELEY: Again, another one who could afford to take a couple years off and have family. Julia Roberts is on the list as the highest paid actress for one reason. She`s still the most bankable actress in Hollywood. She still gets 20 million dollars per film, and she still holds the record for the highest paycheck given to any actress, 25 million dollars for "Mona Lisa Smile."
HAMMER: A 25 million dollar smile indeed. Let`s talk about Jennifer Aniston, also in the news an awful lot and I don`t think we should feel too badly, at least about her bank account. Not really a stellar showing at the box office for her since Friends, but look at that, she ranked number ten on your list. How did she do it?
BLAKELEY: Jennifer Aniston, worth 110 million dollars, a lot of that from royalties that she gets from Friends. That was a ten-year long show. She`s still getting royalties. And also, she`s a bankable actress, not as much as Julia Roberts or Nicole Kidman, but she gets about 8 million dollars a film. She`s had some hits like "Bruce Almighty." And she`s had a lot of flops, but she did just have a hit with the "Breakup," so her price should probably go up soon.
HAMMER: Tell me about Jennifer Lopez, came in at number nine. She is truly a business woman with a golden touch.
BLAKELEY: Jennifer Lopez, 110 million dollars. More than pretty much anyone on our list she has her finger in every media pie. She`s a bankable movie actress, 14 million dollars a film. Her albums haven`t sold so well lately, but she has sold millions in the past. She has a very successful perfume line and she has a clothing line. She`s a producer on MTV, so she`s all over the place.
HAMMER: And she loves what she does and she says she gets involved with every single business and takes it very seriously. Kiri Blakeley of Forbes Magazine, I really appreciate you joining us tonight.

HAMMER: ABC is angry over the scandal rocking the set of "Grey`s Anatomy." After the Golden Globes on Monday night, a war of words erupted over a gay slur "Grey`s Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington allegedly made about his co-star T.R. Knight. Tonight ABC said, quote, we are greatly dismayed that Mr. Washington chose to use such inappropriate language at the Golden Globes, language that he himself deemed unfortunate in his previous public apology. We take this situation very seriously. His actions are unacceptable and are being addressed.
VARGAS: Well, guess who is coming to dinner or coming knocking on the door in New Orleans, looking to borrow some sugar. Tonight, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have moved to New Orleans. We confirmed the move. The move is temporary and related to the filming of a movie. But reports say the couple purchased a multi-million dollar home in the French Quarter and they`re planning on sending their son Maddox to school in the Crescent City. Neighbors seem happy to see them.

MATT DUNN, NEW ORLEANS RESIDENT: She came in there after a couple of hours. I mean, they are moving across the street from me. It`s cool. If I see, how are you doing. I`ll invite them up for a drink.

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. It is 30 minutes past the hour. I`m A.J. Hammer in New York.
VARGAS: And I`m Sibila Vargas in Hollywood. This is TV`s most provocative entertainment news show.
HAMMER: Sibila, coming up in just a few moments, I`m going joined by Phillippe Cousteau (ph). He was with Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter," on the day that he died. I`ll get his very candid thoughts on exactly what happened that day. We will be joined by Phillippe in just a few moments.
VARGAS: The story still gets to me. And also tonight, celebrity serial daters, you know who they are, the celebrities that only date other celebrities. But why do they do it? Why can`t they just settle down with a regular person like us? That`s coming up.
HAMMER: What is going on there? But first tonight, our continuing coverage of Lindsay Lohan going into rehab, a startling decision that she has made. The 20-year-old actress` representatives confirm to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that Lohan voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility for unspecified reasons. Joining me tonight from Hollywood, our good friend, Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist whose clients have included many celebrities.
Nice to see you, Dr. Drew.
DREW PINSKY, ADDICTIONOLOGIST: Thanks, A.J.
HAMMER: So Lindsey says that she`s been in AA. She spoke very candidly about that last month. And now she is going full throttle into rehab. From your professional opinion, what do you think is going on here with Lindsay?
PINSKY: Well, I mean, somebody who fails basic 12-step community support very often needs a higher level of care. Now I don`t know this facility she`s gone into, but if it`s truly an in -- you guys throw around the term rehab as though it has some meaning. It really doesn`t.
We have inpatient level of addiction treatment. There is inpatient medical treatment, inpatient rehabilitation treatment. And then there`s residential treatment. I suspect this is residential treatment, meaning she wasn`t medically ill. She didn`t need the detoxification. She was psychiatrically stable. And she goes into a facility where she can get away from her life and focus on her recovery.
The fact is she was unable to make it in a community-based 12-step, and now she needs a higher level of care. Will this be enough? Time will tell. What`s motivating her? Unsure.
HAMMER: And getting away from the things that influenced her is a real important part of the puzzle it would seem to me, because partying has really defined her as much as acting has. When somebody is in that deep, I mean, she was a hard partier and it`s documented. How hard is it for them to get out?
PINSKY: Well, you know, there is two aspects of that. One is the drug use, whether it is alcohol or any other chemicals. The other is the lifestyle. Getting away from the lifestyle, particularly for a young person, can be the more difficult part. Because when they re-enter the scene, the drugs will naturally come along with it.
You have got to realize, again, addiction is a disorder of the brain`s reward and drive systems, the part that normally sets us towards survival. That becomes tweaked and directed at drugs and alcohol. So all of her thinking, all of her emotions, all of her priorities are directed towards pursuing substances in spite of any desire or any thinking or any volitional desire on her part.
So this is something that she has no control over and she has to stay away from those environments, particularly for the next six months or the drug use will reemerge.
HAMMER: Yes. So basically you are saying it is essential when she does go back into the scene, she needs to stay away from the partying that goes on in Hollywood. She probably needs.
PINSKY: Absolutely.
HAMMER: . to stay away from Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie and places like Hyde. It is not like she could expect to show up there and get a little bottle of water and be satisfied with that, if I understand you.
PINSKY: That is correct. And addicts and alcoholics very often do that to sort of -- they think they are testing themselves. But in fact they are just moving closer to a relapse at that point.
HAMMER: God, that`s got to be difficult, especially when it`s all...
PINSKY: It is tough. But I mean, she needs to be sort of supported and congratulated for taking care of herself. But it may -- you know, this may not be the end of the story. There may be more treatment.
And you`ve got to understand something, you know, addiction is a chronic illness. It is not an acute illness that resolves like a pneumonia. It`s an illness like diabetes or asthma. And we don`t look at diabetes and say, gee, that person`s blood sugar went out of control, diabetic treatment doesn`t work.
We say, look, it needs further treatment, it needs further encouragement. It needs further intervention. And the same is true with addiction. Even people who are diligently involved in recovery can have slips and they go back and get, let`s say, tuned up, so to speak.
But again, you know, it`s funny how I heard a lot of mudslinging towards rehab earlier in the program tonight. And it really is a very serious issue. It`s a medical illness. These young women are at risk. Their lives are in danger by this condition. And if they don`t take this seriously, the outcomes will not be good.
HAMMER: Yes, our publicist that we spoke with, Howard Bragman, said when he`s directing one of his clients toward rehab, it certainly is for very serious reasons. Quickly, Dr. Drew, I know it may be difficult to assess, but if Lindsay were your patient, what would your recommendation be for her based on what you know of her situation?
PINSKY: Well, not knowing exactly what she was doing, basically, what we do is we bring someone in for an assessment, have a medical assessment, a psychiatric assessment, hook up a psychologist, have her dive deeply into the 12-step process with her peers, and then hold her out of her work environment from at least three to six months.
HAMMER: Yes. That seems like a really important component. And as I have said before, whatever she is going through, we wish her the best. Dr. Drew Pinsky, I thank you for joining us, as always.

And we here at SHOWBIZ TONIGHT wonder why these stars can`t be happy with a nice doctor or lawyer? Come on, haven`t you learned anything? Why do they only date their own kind? And are these relationships destined to fail? Joining us in Hollywood is host of TV Guide`s "Fashion Team," Daphne Brogdon.
Hi, Daphne.
DAPHNE BROGDON, TV GUIDE`S "THE FASHION TEAM": Hello.
VARGAS: So let`s talk about Brad Pitt. OK. A gorgeous guy. You know, he`s dated all of these women before. I mean, let`s start with Juliette Lewis, then Gwyneth Paltrow, then Jen Aniston, and now Angelina Jolie. I mean, this guy really epitomizes the celebrity serial dater, doesn`t he?
(CROSSTALK)
BROGDON: Oh, sorry.
VARGAS: Why do some seem to prefer to date other stars only?
BROGDON: I was going to say that, you know, remember when he was on "Head of the Class," he dated Robin Givens. He`s been going up the celebrity food chain ladder. I think in the celebrity circles, he`s like the drunken girl in the dorm room being passed around.
You know, I think it`s actually somewhat strategic, you know, as well as just that`s the access. That`s who they meet. And let`s face it, if you had the chance to date Angelina Jolie, who wouldn`t? I mean, I might.
VARGAS: I think I`m with you right there. But -- I mean, but it`s not necessarily a recipe for bliss. You know, they sometimes break up. I mean, look at Tom Cruise, for example. He dated Mimi Rogers. That broke up. And then Nicole Kidman, then Penelope Cruz, now Katie Holmes. A lot of people are saying that, you know, that marriage isn`t going to last. So, you know, are they destined for failure?
BROGDON: Well, it depends upon what your definition of failure is. I mean, Tom Cruise is married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman. I would have to say none of them ever badmouth him. You know, he seems to come up smelling like a rose. The only time when he doesn`t is, you know, when he mouths off to Matt Lauer on "The Today Show" or something.
But you know, he is somebody who really understands the value of the strategic celebrity dating. I mean, he is purported to have kind of interviewed for the position that Katie Holmes now has.
And look at somebody like a Jessica Simpson/Nick Lachey. They were basically a C-level/D-level celebrity. Together they were like a B-minus. So yes, the celebrity (INAUDIBLE), but you know, career-wise, they are both on the map because of it.
VARGAS: Right. But then there`s a relationship, sort of, you know, a person like Gwyneth Paltrow, let`s take for example. She dated Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Luke Wilson, and now married to Coldplay`s Chris Martin. You know, is it just that some stars are only comfortable with their own?
BROGDON: You know, in her case it might be. She does have a little sort of a haughty air, you know. But, you know, it`s not like they are going to go up to the UPS guy and be like, hey, do you want to date me, or that the UPS guy is going to be like, hey, I wonder if Gwyneth Paltrow would, you know, take it -- asked -- you know, if i asked her out, would she go out?
You know, I think that there is a comfort level that they have. They know how to walk the red carpet. They know the crazy hours and the crazy schedule. So why not?
VARGAS: Sure. And she also comes from that Hollywood royalty, too, right?
BROGDON: Mm-hmm. Yes. That`s probably part of that haughtiness.
(LAUGHTER)
VARGAS: Well, finally, let`s take Jen Aniston. She dated actor Tate Donovan, then there was Brad Pitt, then Vince Vaughn. Maybe it`s just that the stars, like Jen, could maybe be paranoid or insecure that if they dated a non-star, that person would only be dating them because they are a star. I mean, they might be taken advantage of.
BROGDON: Well, and also, it just might be uncomfortable. I mean, if Jennifer Aniston changes her highlights, you know, it`s major issue in a magazine. There`s not many sort of regular folks that are going to be able to deal with that. And, you know, there is plenty of celebrities that you hear say, you know, they can just be sitting on the couch in their sweats watching "American Idol" like the rest of us.
And so if -- they are in their little bubble. So now that, you know, probably her next boyfriend is going to be whoever she does a picture with again.
VARGAS: OK. Well, you know, so I guess a person like you and I, we kind of have to take acting lessons maybe, try to get on those big movies to date some.
BROGDON: Well, you know what, actors are attractive. No wonder they date each other.
VARGAS: Exactly. Well, Daphne Broadman, thank you so much, from TV Guide Channel, "The Fashion Team."

HAMMER: I love that movie. Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. It is time now for the SHOWBIZ TONIGHT video of the day. You have heard of a deer caught in highlights, but have you seen a deer caught in the middle of a frozen lake. Look at that poor guy -- or girl, I can`t quite tell.
This is Lake Thunderbird in Oklahoma. Now, the deer wandered onto the ice and got stuck there for about six hours. I know, it looks kind of sad. People were afraid to get out on the ice because they thought it would break. They were wondering how could they help this poor deer?
Then a local news helicopter moved in for a closer look. Lo and behold, the wind from the copter pushed the deer right into solid ground. There it goes. They saved the day. Thank you Skynews 9. And now the deer is so cool.
Well, tonight we are giving you a fascinating glimpse into the final moments of Steve Irwin`s life. The "Crocodile Hunter" was, of course, killed four months ago by a stingray while he was shooting a show. Philippe Cousteau was with him on that fateful day and was co-hosting Irwin`s final documentary called "Ocean`s Deadliest." It makes its premier on the Animal Planet channel and on Discovery Channel this Sunday. Philippe is going to join me in New York.
I really appreciate you being here.
PHILIPPE COUSTEAU, WITH STEVE IRWIN WHEN KILLED: My pleasure.
HAMMER: I know you have been talking about this quite a bit and I know it`s difficult. But if you could take me back to that day. I know you had been shooting this special with Steve for a couple weeks. If you could take me back to the final moments when Steve was attacked by that stingray.
COUSTEAU: Well, it was quite a clear -- actually a very nice day originally. Started out that way, anyway. Off the coast of Cairns in Australia -- in the northeastern coast of Australia. We were one Croc One. And we were waiting to film tiger sharks.
And Steve, as he was apt to do, was always full of energy. He went out to do some free diving. I was doing a little bit of research back on the boat. And he went on to a dingy, went free diving, looking to see what kind of B-roll (ph) he could shoot, maybe some stuff for his show with Bindi, with his daughter, maybe some B-roll for "Ocean`s Deadliest," we weren`t sure. But you know, you`re on the Great Barrier Reef, you want to take every chance you can to get out.
HAMMER: Sure. This wasn`t even something that was part of your scheduled shoot. It was just something he was filming at the time?
COUSTEAU: He found a big stingray, big bull stingray, and they were filming him swimming above it, as one does, and it darted to the side, and the tail whipped around. And a one in a billion freak accident. The barb just found its way into his heart.
HAMMER: It has to have been so surreal when, I guess, so you`re back on the other boat and you get a call on the radio.
COUSTEAU: Yes.
HAMMER: And you thought, OK, there`s been an accident. But you couldn`t possibly have imagined that this was it and that he was dying.
COUSTEAU: No, there`s no way you can know. None of us were qualified to make that kind of a diagnosis. We brought him to the back of Croc One and we did everything we could to try and revive him. About an hour-and-a- half later we got to Low Islet (ph) Island where paramedics came. We called ahead to the paramedics on the radio and they pronounced them dead.
HAMMER: Has to have been simply an impossible thing to have witnessed and been a part of.
COUSTEAU: It was something that will stay with us for a long time. He was a great guy.
HAMMER: And as much has been made of the fact that you are filming the show, "Ocean`s Deadliest," the stingray not on that list. I want to take a look at a video clip of Steve being Steve and working with a creature on that list, the stone fish.
Let`s take a look at this.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They are not a very mobile fish and rarely move beyond a very small range of sea floor. Their fins are just powerful enough to lift them off the bottom and move them around in short hops. Steve is keeping away from the venomous dorsal spines. And he can handle the fish only because he knows them so well.

HAMMER: Yes. Not a lot of people could do that. Steve talked about living each day as if it were his last. He really did have the sense that he was living on borrowed time, didn`t he?
COUSTEAU: Well, you know, it was something that you take, that you understand and you realize when you are out there dealing with these kinds of animals and you try and do the best you can with being safe. But you know, it`s at the back of your mind, sure.
HAMMER: You said that this is something that will be with you for the rest of your life. I mean, I imagine you`re waking up every day and it`s there. It has to be. It`s not only such a tragedy but here`s a guy who you were close with and worked so closely with.
COUSTEAU: Yes. It`s going to be -- you know, I think the show is a tremendous tribute to him, and I`m proud of it. But it will be a memory that will be with me forever. Yes.
HAMMER: Of course, his attack from the stingray was captured on tape. And everybody for some time was wondering what was going to become of it. Thankfully, I believe, it went to Terri Irwin, his widow, who said the tape has now been destroyed. I take it you have not seen that tape.
COUSTEAU: No, I haven`t seen the tape. And it has been destroyed. And that`s the right thing for it to do. We need to remember Steve for the good things that he did and that doesn`t need to be out in the public.
HAMMER: And certainly his legacy will live on I believe in a very strong way. Obviously we are looking forward to getting the opportunity to see this special. And then you have Bindi, his very young daughter. A lot has also been made of the fact that, you know, maybe she was out and about a little too much too early too soon. But she really does have the spirit that her father has. It seems to me it`s so clear when you watch her and the way she speaks and how eloquent she is.
COUSTEAU: She is. She is just a tremendous young lady. And I think she has a bright future ahead of her. She`s got a wonderful mother. She had a great, great father. And I think they will be there in a great group, John Stainton, a big group of people that are coming around and supporting her. She`s got a bright feature. And she`s a remarkable, remarkable young lady.
HAMMER: And you know first hand what it is to carry on the legacy of a very famous person, your grandfather, Jacques Cousteau. What do you think it is coming from that background that you do and now seeing Bindi coming from the background that she is coming from, what really drives her?
COUSTEAU: Well, I think, you know, a connection. I mean, she had the opportunity already to work with her dad on the show they were working on, Bindi`s show that will be out next year, I understand. And growing up around those animals, I think that passion that Steve had rubbed off on her and, you know, inspired her to continue with that legacy.
And as she grows older, I know everyone will support her no matter how she decides to pursue that legacy. But for now, she has a great rapport on television, she has a great presence. And she is just great.
HAMMER: And you are doing OK?
COUSTEAU: We are doing fine. We are doing all sorts of exciting projects and looking forward to the future.
HAMMER: You are going to be out diving soon again in Hawaii, I believe?
COUSTEAU: Yes. Hawaii in March and then we are doing a six-part series called "Spring Watch" for Animal Planet. And doing all sorts of things. I run a non-profit, Earth Echo International actually, is what most of the time that I do. And we have all sorts of cool, exciting projects planned for the future.
HAMMER: Well, I really appreciate you coming in here and good luck with all of those projects.
COUSTEAU: Well, thank you.

VARGAS: Some of the biggest names in Hollywood have made their annual pilgrimage to Park City, Utah, for the industry`s biggest independent film festival. And once again, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is right there at Sundance. Our own Brooke Anderson will be talking to the biggest stars and getting behind-the-scenes stories. There`s already big buzz about two controversial films that premiere at this year`s festival. One is "Hound Dog" which stars Dakota Fanning.
Then there has been the controversy about that one for months surrounding this movie after the word got out that the 12-year-old actress appeared in what`s being called a very graphic rape scene. Another movie called "Black Snake Moan" stars Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci in which Jackson`s character chains up Ricci`s character and tries to cure her sex addiction. Some pretty heavy stuff there. And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT will be there to cover all of it. So be sure to watch "SHOWBIZ at Sundance" with Brooke Anderson from Park City, Utah, tomorrow through next week.
HAMMER: Coming up, a stunning interview by Oprah. By now you have most likely heard the almost unbelievable story of the missing boys allegedly held captive in Missouri. Well, now the parents of the boys who were missing for four years are talking to Oprah. And that is coming up on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

Two boys, one of them missing for four years, found in Missouri, allegedly kidnapped and held captive. The boys are home. They are safe, and the suspect is locked up on felony kidnapping charges. But plenty of unanswered questions linger evidently even within one young victim`s family.
Shawn Hornbeck`s mother and stepfather told Oprah Winfrey that they are still struggling to grasp the scope of abuse their son may have endured.

OPRAH WINFREY, TALK SHOW HOST: Do you think he was sexually abused?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.
WINFREY: Do you think he was tortured?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That I don`t know yet.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You know, there`s more than one kind of torture. There`s mental torture. There`s physical torture. I have no doubt that, you know, mentally that he`s not the same boy that he was.

HAMMER: So you know, Shawn was out of the room when Winfrey and his parents discussed his possible abuse. And by the way, there is no mention of sexual assault in the charges that are filed against Michael Devlin. CNN has its own interview with the Hornbecks. Soledad O`Brien`s interview will air tomorrow morning on "AMERICAN MORNING."
