ANDERSON: Hi there everyone. I`m Brooke Anderson in Hollywood. And tonight Barbara Walters tells all about the Paris Hilton interview controversy. We`ve got her startling revelations coming up.
HAMMER: But first, Paris` co-star gets a reprieve in court. High drama today in an L.A. court room as Nicole Richie tries to avoid the same fate as Paris, getting locked up in jail. Today was the day that wrong way Richie was to possibly go on trial on DUI charges for allegedly smoking pot and then taking a drive in the wrong direction on a freeway.
ANDERSON: That`s right, A.J. And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT was in court today for the big showdown.

ANDERSON: The latest saga in Nicole Richie`s legal troubles is sponsored by the letters DUI. But Nicole is looking to get rid of the U and the I.
HARVEY LEVIN, TMZ.COM: I think the heat is on Nicole.
ANDERSON: Her DUI case began with this bizarre traffic stop last December, when witnesses reported she was driving the wrong way on a California freeway. She`s pleaded not guilty to DUI. And SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you that the "Simple Life" star is now bringing out the big guns to do what her pal, Paris Hilton, failed to do, avoid jail.
LISA BLOOM, COURT TV: Nicole Richie apparently is going to challenge the drug test that was given to her.
ANDERSON: Nicole has won the first round. On Wednesday, the day the trial was originally scheduled to start, she won a delay until next month.
LEVIN: Nicole wanted a continuance because she has an expert witness who specializes in drug testing who wasn`t available until August 5th.
ANDERSON: SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has obtained the document Richie`s attorneys filed with the court. It says their expert witness, Dr. Terrence Mcgehee (ph), will question the reliability of the urinalysis Nicole took that night. That testimony, Richie`s attorneys say, will, quote, have a legitimate tendency to disprove that Miss Richie was driving while impaired.
BLOOM: It`s not like a DNA test where there`s a high level of certainty. Drug tests can be unreliable.
ANDERSON: Attorney and Court TV anchor Lisa Bloom suggests to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that Nicole Richie, the smart one on the "Simple Life" --
NICOLE RICHIE, "THE SIMPLE LIFE": I walked in on your son naked.
ANDERSON: -- may also be waging a smarter fight in her DUI case than you know who did in hers.
BLOOM: Nicole Richie`s attorneys are going to attack the drug test. They`re going to attack the police. They`re just going to attack, attack, attack, and try to create doubt.
ANDERSON: But just like in her troubled plagued escapades on the "Simple Life," Nicole will likely run into a little hitch if she fights her DUI cases by attacking her drug test, namely a little tidbit police say Nicole shared with them the night of her traffic stop.
LEVIN: She allegedly confessed to the cop that she had smoked pot and was -- had taken vicodin.
ANDERSON: Marijuana and vicodin? Not good. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is asking, just how can Nicole win by quibbling over the drug test once the jury hears that alleged admission? Court TV`s Lisa Bloom tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT what she shouldn`t do.
BLOOM: It probably would not be a good defense to say don`t listen to what I said to the police, because I was high at the time. I don`t think that`s going to be going anywhere.
ANDERSON: All kidding aside, Bloom says there`s all kinds of things Nicole can do to refute that alleged admission.
BLOOM: She may testify that she said no such thing. She never admitted to anything. They apparently never found any drugs of any kind in her car. So she could refute that. And then it`s going to be up to the jury to decide who to believe.
ANDERSON: Of course, given the circus that was Paris Hilton`s DUI case, where charges that she got special treatment still linger, all eyes are waiting to see what happens with Nicole Richie. Court TV`s Bloom tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that Richie can play this smartly.
BLOOM: I think the Paris Hilton case should be very instructive to her. Have a good defense, put up a defense, but don`t try to get special privileges that other people wouldn`t get.
ANDERSON: And if she does that, maybe Nicole can emerge from this whole mess with her image intact.

HAMMER: So Nicole Richie may be able to get through this with her image intact, but can she actually keep herself out of jail? Joining me now in New York, criminal defense attorney Rachel Kugel. Rachel specializes in DUI cases. Joining us tonight from Chicago, Ken Baker, the editorial director for "USMagazine.com."
Rachel, Ken, it`s good to see you both. Rachel, we got ahold of the court documents that show that Nicole`s lawyers are planning to challenge the whole drug test that she took after her arrest. They`re claiming not reliable. Is that a smart move on her part?
RACHEL KUGEL, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Yes. I was watching the piece. I think what Lisa Bloom said is right. It`s absolutely the smart move. The fact of the matter is that DWI or DUI cases involving drugs rather than alcohol are much more triable from a defense perspective. In other words, they`re much more difficult for the prosecutor to prove. And I think she`s doing the smart thing by sort of taking advantage of that.
All this talk about the state having a drug recognition expert; let me tell you something, all a drug recognition expert is a cop who took a class. So I think that`s important that people out there understand that this is no big deal, this DRE, or drug recognition expert.
HAMMER: OK, so all that being true, here`s the source of my confusion, and I think the source of confusion for a lot of people -- and we addressed it in our story.
KUGEL: Sure.
HAMMER: She is fighting the drug test, as we said, but the cops did say she did admit that she was smoking pot and popping vicodin before she got popped for driving the wrong way. I kind of see that as a problem for her.
KUGEL: Yes, those unfortunate statements -- and I can tell you as a defense attorney, and I`m sure my colleagues all would agree with me, we would all rather our clients did not -- kept their mouth shut and didn`t say these sort of things, because they do make cases way more difficult for us. This would be a great case without that statement.
But I think, you know, there are still some important things. One, we haven`t heard the exact statement. That`s really important. I mean, it`s being made to sound as if she admitted to doing these things right before she drove. We don`t know that that`s exactly what the statement was. It`s important that we knew what exactly the statement was, in order to determine if it was really that bad.
And, of course, the other question is is it admissible. And, two, is there some other -- three, is there some other argument that can be made, like Lisa Bloom pointed out in your piece, that she didn`t say it at all? I mean, is it possible she can refute it?
HAMMER: Right, and Lisa also pointed out -- you`ll appreciate that as a defense attorney -- she probably shouldn`t show up and say, well, I didn`t really mean it. I was high at the time.
KUGEL: Yes, that would be a bad move.
HAMMER: Bad thing. Nicole did not show up for court today. She didn`t have to, for the record. But she was apparently up in Canada, I guess, with her rock star boyfriend, Joe Madden, at one of his Good Charlotte gigs. Ken, do you think, in terms of image, in terms of looking good for the court, she should have made the effort to show up to show that, you know, she actually is taking this very seriously?
KEN BAKER, USMAGAZINE.COM: Well, I think she`s doing the really smart thing, and she`s saying I didn`t have to be there, and I`m not going to create a media circus and have images on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT and all over the Internet of me going to court when I didn`t have to be there. So from a publicity perspective, it was probably a smart thing.
But what`s interesting here is that the judge did set a trial date for August 16th, and said she`s going to be there then, and she has to go to trial. And our sources told us -- and actually the court did confirm -- that Nicole was offered a plea deal. And they offered her a chance to do some jail time and say we won`t go to trial.
But I know a few things. I don`t know the legalities as well as maybe some other experts. But I know Nicole. I know that Nicole does not want to go to jail. And I also know this: Nicole Richie is pregnant. And she`s going to be about five months pregnant when this trial starts. And I think she wants to do everything she can avoid to go to jail while she`s pregnant.
HAMMER: Well, Rachel, as a legal expert, is that something the judge would take into consideration, the fact that she is pregnant? It seems like she wouldn`t be getting normal treatment. It would be special treatment in that case.
KUGEL: Well, I think that they can take that into consideration in anybody`s case. I would like to speak also to this plea offer thing. There would be no reason to take a plea offer unless she was getting some benefits. I wouldn`t tell -- I would tell her don`t take a plea offer unless that plea offer does not involve jail.
Back to the pregnancy thing, they certainly can take that into consideration as a mitigating factor. It`s done all the time. He can do - - the judge can do that, as well as a prosecutor, in terms of considering their offer, can do that. And it happens al the time. They absolutely do take it into consideration.
They can either lessen the amount of time she would do in jail, change it so that it fits her schedule, as far as what she`s doing with her health, or maybe give her a sentencing alternative, which is also possible here, like community service, intensive supervision, or house arrest.
HAMMER: OK, and we should point out that it is reported that is she is pregnant. Not necessarily so. Ken, real quick, you know, if she does end up going to jail -- and Charles, do we have the pictures of Paris Hilton and all of the circus effects that were going on when she was -- when she was hauled off to jail and back to court? Can we expect the same thing with Nicole Richie? Look it.
BAKER: There`s definitely going to be a media circus when Nicole Richie goes to court and when and if she goes to jail. I don`t think it will be on the magnitude of Paris Hilton, who sort of has this international celebrity quality that Nicole doesn`t have. But Nicole has done a smart thing. She`s avoided what Paris did.
Paris` defense was basically, oh, my publicist didn`t tell me, and I don`t read my mail. Her defense is going to be very much on a scientific basis, and she`s already doing the smart thing.
HAMMER: Yes, sounds like she`s at least sticking with the proper legal counsel and staying with what her lawyers tell her to do.

ANDERSON: As you know, Nicole`s buddy Paris Hilton went to jail, but then there was all this controversy over her first post jail TV interview. Our own Larry King got it, but did Barbara Walters really get dissed? Barbara opens up with explosive new revelations surrounding that very nasty controversy. I`ve got that next.

ANDERSON: All right. Well, Barbara Walters opening up for the first time about not getting the first post-jail TV interview with Paris Hilton. Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s most provocative entertainment news show. I`m Brooke Anderson.
On "The View" today, Barbara Walters told her side of the fierce battle to get that exclusive interview with Paris. NBC was reportedly ready to pay one million dollars for it. But, after a public outcry, NBC canceled.
Over at ABC, Walters had actually nailed the interview first, but Hilton`s camp went to NBC when they got a better offer. OK, with us tonight from Hollywood, Howard Bragman, celebrity publicist and founder of 15 Minutes Public Relations. Also in Hollywood tonight, Mary Murphy, contributing editor for TV Guide.
All right, one of the really shocking things today is that Barbara talked openly about the dirty little secret in television, which is you don`t pay for the interview itself. But you do pay to purchase photographs and other things and then you do get that interview. Listen to what she said.

WALTERS: You can pay an amount for home movies and photographs. Okay? So, NBC said what they were going to do, and ABC said what they were going to do. And there was a vast discrepancy. And NBC was much more, and Rick Hilton said to so me, you know, I owe you one, and I`m sorry, but we`re going to go with NBC.
I felt bad. You know, I lost the interview. But so be it.

ANDERSON: As we know, the interview ultimately went to Larry King on CNN. CNN paid nothing for it. Mary, I was relieved that somebody finally admitted that these things do go on. But I was surprised, at the same time, that she even acknowledged it. How did you feel? Were you shocked?
MARY MURPHY, TV GUIDE: Well, I think Barbara dropped a bombshell today talking about this. It does go on. It`s the new way of journalism. We won`t pay you for the story. We`ll pay your charity. We`ll pay your pictures. We`ll pay your videos. It`s outrageous.
Most journalists hate the fact that it goes on. And Barbara Walters exposed this and now we have to deal with it.
ANDERSON: Right, and, of course, there could be a conflict of interest. There are all these things that people say should not be happening, in terms of paying for an interview. And as we know, after NBC canceled that interview, the Hiltons went back to Barbara, offered it to her for free. But at that point, she turned it in down. Listen to this.

WALTERS: I began to be uncomfortable about it. And I then said thank you so much, but I don`t want to do the interview. And my network backed me up, even though it would have been very big ratings. The interview then went to Larry King and he did free, as would I have when I did it. So then my question was, well, did I make a mistake? It would have been a very big --
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Did you feel that way?
WALTERS: No, I don`t.

ANDERSON: OK, well, Howard, forgive me for being skeptical here, but Barbara Walters is known as the most competitive interviewer in the business. Do you buy that she wasn`t bothered by how things went down?
HOWARD BRAGMAN, 15 MINUTES PUBLIC RELATIONS: You know, after looking at the interview, I`m not surprised, and I think she was speaking honestly, because I don`t think Paris was a very good interview subject, and I don`t think she enlisted the emotion we would have liked to see and that Barbara likes.
But I want to bring up one more point, Brooke. I think there was something else going on. I think ABC and NBC had a secret little pact of mutual destruction. They said neither of us is going to pay for this interview, and we`ll both walk away, because neither of us can afford this on our reputations right now. And so I think there was kind of an agreement that they wouldn`t do it, but I think Barbara came out just fine in this thing. And I think she said the right thing today, and I think she was honest when she said she`s glad she didn`t do it.
ANDERSON: Good point, and that was a huge understatement that Paris Hilton wasn`t a good interview subject, Howard. But I do want us all to remember that Barbara actually got the first interview with Paris when she was in jail. It was a phone interview. Despite everything that went down, Barbara said today that she doesn`t dislike Paris, that basically, hey, no hard feelings.

WALTERS: I have to start off by saying that I like Paris Hilton. Whatever she did or didn`t do, she`s basically a good kid. She`s a nice girl. She`s not a mean girl.

ANDERSON: OK, Mary, do you believe that basically, you know, she said, hey, I really like Paris. Not a big deal because the Hilton family really turned their back on Barbara, supposedly a friend, reportedly for money. What do you think?
MURPHY: Well, first of all, who knew that the Hilton family needed money? I mean, that was one of the biggest shocks --
ANDERSON: Great point.
MURPHY: -- of the whole thing. Actually, Brooke, from everything I have heard about Paris Hilton, every young person I know, everybody who has met her says the same thing. She`s really sweet. She`s really nice. She`s not a mean kid. Of course, my question through the whole thing is what is up with these parents? And I do believe that Barbara likes Paris. She probably doesn`t like the parents anymore, because they turned away from her from the interview.
Nobody likes to lose an interview. It`s always embarrassing. But Barbara was lucky to escape this one.
ANDERSON: And she made it clear today that the reason she`s talking about it now is because the show has been on hiatus for two weeks. But, Howard, should she even be talking about it now, or should she just drop the whole thing?
BRAGMAN: I think we were all a little surprised that she talked about it today, and I think I would have advised her to let it go. But I have to really say what she said was courageous today. She talked the truth about how networks get these kind of things. And the networks didn`t want to talk about it and she did.
But she`s Barbara Walters. What are you going to do, fire her, criticize her? She`s too rich and too powerful. So you go, girl.
ANDERSON: She was very candid, very frank, and that`s admirable. Howard Bragman, Mary Murphy, good to see you both.
HAMMER: Well, Brooke, I think a lot of people think that Paris is certainly one of the baddest of the Hollywood bad girls. Of course, there`s her buddy Nicole Richie and Britney and Lindsay.

ANDERSON: Ah, yes, such fond memories. You remember how they went at it about the Iraq war and other stuff. Well, "Us Weekly Magazine" is reporting that on her recent annual gay family boat cruise, Rosie really laid into Elizabeth. Take a look at this picture. In front of 1,500 people, Rosie brought out a huge photo of Hasselbeck marked up as the devil.
And take a listen to what she said, her only expletive credit was "Survivor." Come on! I can`t fight with pregnant people. Just go have your baby and have a nice life.
Sounds like somebody had a bad day of shuffle board. Definitely not the love boat. We reached out to Elizabeth and Rosie`s people. Not a peep from them.
HAMMER: She`s got to let it go. I think Rosie is being bad for keeping this feud going, but, you know, she`s nowhere near as naughty as the Paris`, the Britneys, the Lindsays. How did they overtake the bad guys? I`ve got a SHOWBIZ special report, bad girls, bad guys, coming up.

Tonight a SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report, "Bad Girls, Bad Boys!". You know, we could barely go a day, A.J., without hearing about a Hollywood star crossing the line. Here`s the latest. "Simple Life" star Nicole Richie got a reprieve of sorts. Richie`s DUI hearing was delayed until August 16th. She did not appear in court today, but she`ll be required to appear next month.
Richie was granted the hearing so a defense expert could testify to challenge the drug test being used against her. And the court spokesperson confirmed that Richie was offered a plea deal, but the terms of that deal have not been released. No word on whether or not she`ll accept it. Richie has a prior DUI conviction. If she`s convicted a second time, she faces a minimum of five days in jail.
Richie recently told SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that she`s willing to face whatever consequences come her way. The controversy surrounding Richie`s "Simple Life" co-star Paris Hilton isn`t fading fast. Now Barbara Walters is speaking out about what she really thinks about Paris.

BARBARA WALTERS, HOST, "THE VIEW": I have to start off by saying that I like Paris Hilton. Whatever she did or didn`t do, she`s basically a good kid. She`s a nice girl. She`s not a mean girl.

HAMMER: So, Paris may not be a mean girl, but she`s certainly one of Hollywood`s best known bad girls, and all this talk of bad girls got us here at SHOWBIZ TONIGHT wondering where have all of Hollywood`s bad boys gone? Think about it, there used to be so many of them -- you had your Jack Nicholson, Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell . Now those guys, out of the picture. Bad girls are front and center. What is going on here? Our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT special report continues now with more bad girls.

HAMMER (voice over): Bad boys come in all shapes and sizes. There`s the rock star bad boy, the 1980s bad boy, and even the angry bad boy. But these guys have gone away. Gone, pushed aside by bad girls, very bad girls.

JO PIAZZA, ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST: I think the bad boys were so 2005-2006, and 2007 is really the year of the bad girl.
HAMMER: From cat fights and DUIs with Paris Hilton, to head shaving and heavy duty partying with Britney Spears, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you Hollywood`s young leading ladies are doing enough misbehaving to out-bad the bad boys.
DAVID CAPLAN, VH1`s 24SIZZLER.COM: They just behave by a different code of conduct. In the past the guys who have been out of control when you look at Colin Farrell -- and even earlier like Cory Haim (ph) and all those guys in the `80s and `90s, you really saw them just plummet. The girls somehow, it always goes well for them.
HOWARD BRAGMAN, FIFTEEN MINUTES PUBILC RELATIONS: I call it the cat pack right now. That`s Paris and Lindsay and Nicole. It shows that women can behave just as badly as men and be just as outrageous.
HAMMER: So who is the most outrageous bad girl of them all? Let`s start with Nicole Richie. Rehab and rumored eating disorders were just the tip of the iceberg. Richie`s bad girl stock skyrocketed with this mug shot.
CAPLAN: Nicole Richie is one of the baddest bad girls if Hollywood right now because she`s so unabashed about what makes her bad.
HAMMER: Police arrested Nicole for DUI after driving the wrong way on a freeway in December. She had no problem allegedly telling cops she had been popping Vicodin and smoking pot before getting behind the wheel.
From mug shots to mean girls. You can`t say the word`s Hollywood bad girl without bringing up Paris Hilton. Paris not only has her sex tapes, but also her DUI arrest, jail sentence, and dozens of cat fights.
CAPLAN: Paris Hilton is one of young Hollywood`s meanest girls. She`s really the leader of this clique. You see her in nightclubs. She`s talking bad about everyone.
PARIS HILTON: She`s a (BLEEP) hoodlum, broke (BLEEP) from Compton.
CAPLAN: But at the same time all these girls flock to her. When Britney Spears wanted to essentially come out after splitting with Kevin Federline, who did she go to? Paris Hilton.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We were nice. We just won.
PIAZZA: It`s kind of like the bad girl that everyone wants the chance to be at one point in their life, but they can never do it.
HAMMER: From Hollywood bad girls to beauty queen bad girls. Miss USA Tara Connor and former Miss Nevada Katie Reese gave pageants a bad name after admitting to underage drinking and drug use.
TARA CONNER, FMR. MISS USA: I wouldn`t say that I`m an alcoholic.
HAMMER: While Miss USA went to rehab, Miss Nevada gave up her crown after these racy party pictures made their way to the internet and to entertainment sites like TMZ.com.
CAPLAN: It`s sort of good girl, gone bad.
HAMMER: Why is this happening? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you the fascination with our bad girls is largely due to the lack of any good bad boys.
PIAZZA: We just don`t have any bad boys on the scene. Colin Farrell has disappeared.
HAMMER: A smoker, a heavy drinker, and a serial dater, Colin Farrell burst onto the Hollywood scene as one of the baddest boys since Jack Nicholson.
COLIN FARRELL, ACTOR: I can`t. I`d have to strangle you.
HAMMER: He famously told "W" magazine, quote, "When I come to town (BLEEP) everything I can."
CAPLAN: Colin Farrell was great. He really went to the extreme with his bad boy behavior. There was drinking. There was just full-on promiscuous out. There was violence, he had a bit of a temper.
HAMMER: But Farrell`s full-throttle partying caught up with him. Colin checked into rehab from drinking and painkillers in 2005 after making the bad boy movie "Miami Vice."
FARRELL: You think I`m (INAUDIBLE) after that?
CAPLAN: He went into rehab, and he sort of saw the light. But with him, on a personal front, it also helped him, though, that he had a child to take care of. You see that with a lot of these pad boys, they have a kid and then they become this great, a doting dad.
HAMMER: Doting dad? Doting dads don`t sell magazines. Bad girls do. Especially in the tabloids, where most of the readership is made up of women, and SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can now tell you that is why we`re seeing more of this.
BRAGMAN: Every time a woman goes out, there`s -- you have her outfit you can judge. Does she look sober? There`s so many things, and a guy can put on a pair of jeans and T-shirt and pretty much go anywhere. If a woman goes out without makeup, it`s news, right? You`ll see that picture in the tabloids and go, look how bad she looks.

ANDERSON: Well, from bad girls in Hollywood to funny girls making headlines on Capitol Hill. A new musical parody is singing its support for New York Senator Hillary Clinton. It`s the must-see video on the Internet these days, and it seems to have changed the rhythm of the political debate. Here`s CNN`s Jeanne Moos for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): Obama girl --
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Cuz, I`ve got a crush on Obama --
MOOS: Meet Hot for Hill.
TARYN SOUTHERN, MUSIC VIDEO CREATOR (singing): I have a crush on a girl named Hill, but she`s not with me, she`s with a guy named Bill --
MOOS: Oh, he won`t mind.
SOUTHERN (singing): Hillary, I think I need you!
MOOS: Actress Taryn Southern was inspired by the "I`ve Got a Crush on Obama" video.
SOUTHERN (speaking): I thought it was brilliant
MOOS: So the former "American Idol" contestant did a parody of the parody.
SOUTHERN (singing): I could be your maid, or your White House aide, or the soldier who marches in your first parade --
SOUTHERN (speaking): I would vote for Hillary.
MOOS: But we`re not sure this is the best way to help her get elected.
SOUTHERN (singing): H-I-L-L-A-R-Y, I know you`re not gay, but I`m hoping for bi --
MOOS: We opted for a bi-coastal chat (ph).
(on camera): The whole angle of a girl writing about a crush on a girl, is it safe to assume you`re acting?
SOUTHERN (speaking) I am actually straight.
SOUTHERN (singing): The USA would be a better place if everyone could just get a taste -- of you --
SOUTHERN (speaking): When I was writing this, this video, I knew that the comedy would come from the fact that it`s a girl singing about how she has a crush on a girl. That`s what made the parody different from the "Obama Girl" video.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You`re into border security, let`s break this border between you and me --
MOOS (voice over): It`s hard to keep up. Not too long ago a Condoleezza Rice video was big.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Condi-licious --
MOOS: A Condi imitator rapped on subjects ranging from Iraq to her Condi-licious shoes.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I live my shoes so much I give them names like they were children --
MOOS: From Condi`s shoes to Hillary`s skin.
SOUTHERN (singing): You`ve got great skin.
MOOS: The gayness seemed to get under the skin of some, though most who commented online seemed amused.
(on camera): She may be hot for Hill, but Hillary wasn`t hot to comment. The campaign had nothing to say about the video.
(Voice over): They never returned our call. There was competition between "Hillary Girl" and "Obama Girl". While "Obama Girl" featured bootie shorts. "Hot for Hill" focused on pantsuits.
SOUTHERN (singing): I like your hair, the pants that you wear, and the shape of your derriere --
SOUTHERN (speaking): I do like her pant suits.
MOOS: Derriere, was just a nice rhyme.

HAMMER: Daniel Radcliffe, of course, known to the world as Harry Potter, talking about reading J.K. Rowling`s seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series. Daniel has certainly been one busy young man, promoting his new film "Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix." It`s based on the fifth book.
Daniel, now, is just shy of his 18th birthday. He has already made quite a fortune, thanks to Potter. I did ask him about that, his controversial nude scene on the London stage, and exactly what it`s been like being the most famous boy wizard of all time.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
HAMMER (on camera): So it`s amazing, you know, what a ride it has been for you in your life. And it`s been seven years now since the very first Potter film. In fact, Charles, can we throw up a little clip we have of the very first film?
RADCLIFFE: Oh my God!
HAMMER: And also, a little look at what you look like in "Order Of The Phoenix." I am curious, when you see an image like that, do you recall? Do you have any sense of what was going through your head at the time all of that was happening in your life?
RADCLIFFE: Yeah. You know, not -- in a general way, yes. I think I was just -- I was a kid on a film set having the time of my life. And it was just amazing and fantastic, and whereas there, I`m -- I took -- I`m now taking it a lot more seriously than I did then.
HAMMER: Now it`s your craft.
RADCLIFFE: I would have never used that word, but now I`ve got a real passion for it. I want to get better at it.
HAMMER: Do you ever watch the old movies?
RADCLIFFE: No, never.
HAMMER: Why is that?
RADCLIFFE: Well, I think, you know, it`s still about moving forward and doing more new different things and stuff, But, equally, it`s all a bit embarrassing. It`s like, you know, seeing a baby photo.
HAMMER: Looking at your baby pictures.
RADCLIFFE: Exactly. It`s -- yeah.
HAMMER: It has been interesting, I think, for the fans to watch you grow up over the years and also see the changes that Harry Potter goes through, as anybody going through their teens is going to go through. And, of course, a lot of people making a big deal out of your first on screen kiss in this movie.
RADCLIFFE: Yes.
HAMMER: It seems pretty normal to me. Why do you think people make such a big deal out of it?
RADCLIFFE: I don`t know. I just think it`s -- obviously, it`s a big moment for Harry because in anybody -- I think it`s this. In anybody`s life, their first kiss is a pretty big deal, and I think Harry has become so a part of everybody`s lives, who have read about him, and who have watch the films, that for them, his first kiss is a big deal for them as well. So, I think that`s sort of reason.
HAMMER: They`re sharing in the moment?
RADCLIFFE: They`re sharing in the moment, exactly. Yes.
HAMMER: Seems to makes sense. Just a couple of days away, the seventh book in the Harry Potter series is coming up. I`m just curious if you yourself are feeling a little anxiety over that?
RADCLIFFE: I`m not. The only thing I`m feeling anxious about is finding out what happens before I read it for sure. You know?
HAMMER: So, you want to see it now. I`m curious. The reason I would think you might be anxious is because, of course, speculation has been rampant, J.K. Rowling has said two major characters will die. So speculation rampant that Harry Potter dies. So, will you read it from front to end, or will you flip right --
RADCLIFFE: No, I will absolutely be reading it from the very beginning. I will not be flipping to the back, absolutely not. I want to get the whole story, no matter how long it takes me.
HAMMER: So we need to get the message out clearly to everybody, do not spoil the ending for Daniel Radcliffe.
RADCLIFFE: Oh, God, now they`re only gong to try and do it!
HAMMER: He wants to know exactly what happens in his own terms on his own time.
RADCLIFFE: Yes. My phone will be turned off for five days.
HAMMER: Have you thought about, you know, having been so invested in this character, how you`ll actually feel if he is killed?
RADCLIFFE: It`s -- I don`t know, to be honest. I really don`t know. I think I would be very sad if he does, but not out of a sense of, oh, I wish he lived just out of, you know, saying good-bye to somebody who has played such an important part in my life without ever actually existing. It won`t be a sadness, like, I wish she hadn`t written that. Because whatever she writes, I`m certain it will be brilliant. It will just be a bit of a -- sort of a moment of, you know, good-bye, I suppose.
HAMMER: One thing that I like that I have heard you said is, despite all the money, money hasn`t changed the way you are as a person. And it won`t change the way you are as a person.
RADCLIFFE: No.
HAMMER: Which is difficult to comprehend for a lot of people. Why do you think that is for you?
RADCLIFFE: I think because it depends what motivates you in life. Now, I -- you know, I have been in a position where I`ve had a very privileged life in the beginning, so my motivation has always been about -- particularly in terms of acting -- it`s been about the work itself, rather than about what the work will get me. You know? So I think it just depends what your motivation is.
Mine is all about making the best possible Harry Potter films and the best possible acting career that I can, in the long-term. And it`s not really about the money so much for me at all.
HAMMER: I think that`s a really good thing. And, obviously, you have key people if your life keeping you grounded.
RADCLIFFE: Yes, I do.
HAMMER: And keeping your head on straight, which is really important.
RADCLIFFE: Yes.
HAMMER: And, of course, much ado was made about your big onstage appearance in "Equus" over in London, where you appeared nude on stage. I know that you have to have expected a reaction from people --
RADCLIFFE: Yes.
HAMMER: When you announced you`re going to be doing that. Could you have imaged, or were you shocked by the worldwide headlines that ensued?
RADCLIFFE: No, I wasn`t particularly. I knew that it would possibly - - that they would all be saying, oh, this is a terrible idea. I can`t believe he`s doing it. Particularly those generous English tabloids, were they`re really kind about it all.
HAMMER: What was the worst thing they said?
RADCLIFFE: The worst headline -- I can`t remember what paper it was - - it was something like, "Crash: What`s that? It`s the sound of a career coming to a grinding halt."
The brilliant thing about that was they were wrong. And, you know, I always like to wrong foot people. I could go on doing other things and not challenging myself at all and probably getting on fine. But there`s no point in that. I don`t -- that doesn`t interest me. I want to do stuff that will challenge myself. And if it, you know, turns a few heads along the way, then that`s just something else -- you know, it`s all a part of it.
HAMMER: It sounds like you have no regrets about having done nude on stage in "Equus".
RADCLIFFE: No, not at all.
HAMMER: Did it accomplish what you hoped it would accomplish?
RADCLIFFE: It accomplished everything as much as, you know, it was a fantastic -- it was a brilliant experience. And I learned a huge amount from it. And it got, you know, on the whole, really great reviews. And so - - and I suppose, you know, it`s one -- it`s one step in a very long journey -- I assume, a long journey -- of making people see me as an actor, rather than just the actor who plays Harry Potter.
HAMMER: J.K. Rowling has said that she hasn`t absolutely ruled out the possibility that maybe she might write another Potter book down the line. Where everybody had always said, no, that`s not going to happen. Who knows if that actually will happen, but if it does happen and it does happen in a timely enough fashion, could you see yourself doing any more Potter movies beyond the next two?
RADCLIFFE: I would have to think very long and hard.
HAMMER: I`ll give you five seconds.
RADCLIFFE: To be honest, I really don`t think she will.
HAMMER: Probably unlikely.
RADCLIFFE: Yes.
HAMMER: You don`t think she`ll actually continue to write.
RADCLIFFE: I don`t think so.
HAMMER: You don`t think you would do another film even if she wrote it?
RADCLIFFE: I would have to think about it. It would probably be -- she would only write it if it was going to be amazing, so -- you know, she doesn`t need the money, so she wouldn`t have that motivation for doing it. So she would only write it if she felt is would further the story. And if it genuinely furthered the story, then yeah, I probably would.
