Who is the Hero in the Tom-Kat Divorce?; Lessons to be Learned from Tom-Kat`s Divorce

Aired July 10, 2012 - 23:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NISCHELLE TURNER, HOST: Katie Holmes, a hero for standing up to superstar Tom? Tom Cruise, a hero for avoiding an ugly public divorce disaster? Team Katie. Team Tom. It`s the Tom-Kat split showdown you haven`t heard. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT dares to ask, who`s the real Hollywood hero?

(MUSIC)

Hello, everybody. A.J. Hammer is off tonight. I`m Nischelle Turner in Hollywood with tonight`s big, burning question. Who`s the hero in the Tom-Kat divorce?

Yes, who`s the hero? Is it Katie Holmes for doing what may have seemed unthinkable, walking out on Tom Cruise and a marriage she no longer wanted to be in?

Or is Tom Cruise the hero for stepping up to the plate and giving Katie what she wanted, a divorce in a near-record time for Hollywood?

Yes, I know this may sound off the wall, considering everything we`ve been hearing and how it seems almost everyone`s rallying around Katie. But could it be that Tom Cruise is actually getting a bad rap?

That was the great debate today after Tom and Katie revealed they had reached a settlement just 11 days after Katie filed for divorce.

Let`s take this one to the judge, shall we? Judge David Young in Miami tonight. He`s a former Florida Circuit Court judge and one-time host of TV`s "Judge David Young Show." Also with me tonight from New York, "Inside Edition" correspondent, Megan Alexander.

OK. So this quick settlement in this divorce I think is as much of a shocker as when Katie actually filed the divorce papers less than two weeks ago. But today, a lot people were calling Katie a hero.

I mean, look at this headline from "The Hollywood Reporter" and what it says. It says, "Katie Holmes was brilliant in her divorce strategy."

Now, she clearly had a plan for getting out of her marriage, and that plan - well, it worked. So, Judge Young, do you see Katie here as a hero?

JUDGE DAVID YOUNG, FMR. FLORIDA CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE: I see Katie and Tom both as heroes. I would really want to hope that they did what they did for the benefit of their daughter, because when you see these prolonged divorces the ones who really get hurt are the children.

And for the divorce to take place this quickly, there are a lot of suppositions. Did this happen? Did that happen? You know, we`ll never really know the truth.

But what we will know is that this child will be taken care of. This child will be given love by both parents, and that`s what we`re really talking about.

That`s really in the justice system what we want, is for the children to be safe, secure and loved. And obviously, Suri will be.

TURNER: You know, I like your view there, Judge Young. But in America, we like to choose sides, don`t we? We like to say that one person`s right and one person`s wrong.

So Megan, I want to put this question to you, same question, because some people might say that Katie was more cunning than heroic, that she rented this apartment in New York City. She filed for divorce just days before Tom`s 50th birthday.

And it was just revealed that now she`s working on this movie about being a single mom in New York. So Megan, what do you think, hero Katie or not?

MEGAN ALEXANDER, CORRESPONDENT, "INSIDE EDITION": You know, I just don`t think the word "hero" is appropriate in this situation, especially in a divorce involving a child, so I agree the word "cunning" may be better.

Look, she certainly had a plan from the beginning. She used her father who is an attorney, and he did help her in moving forward. I think the public, Nischelle, was on Katie`s side. They saw this is a mother protecting her daughter and, in a sense, breaking free from what supposedly has been a bit of an oppressive situation in terms of things coming out with the Church of Scientology.

But we`re still learning what may have taken place. But I think the public was on Katie`s side in terms of her doing what she needed to do to protect her daughter. We`re always going to be a fan of someone doing that.

TURNER: Yes, that`s a good point, Megan because you know -

YOUNG: I agree -

TURNER: Go ahead, judge. Go ahead. Weigh in.

YOUNG: I agree with that. You know, when you see the antics of Tom Cruise and what he`s done during the history of this marriage and the history of his career, you have to go with Katie.

You see someone who is stable, someone who obviously loves her child so much and wanted to protect this child from scientology. And she had it all planned out.

And when you deal with a superstar like Tom Cruise, you have to have everything planned out. You have to have the I`s dotted and T`s crossed.

I would have loved to have been - love to have been a fly on the wall when the lawyers got together and said, "If you don`t sign this, then this is going to be made public and you really don`t want that to happen." "OK, I`ll sign on the dotted line, immediately if not soon."

ALEXANDER: Right. Right.

TURNER: I think we all wanted to be in that room there, judge, because, Tom, like you guys have mentioned - he hasn`t been faring so well in this situation.

If you look at all the headlines in the tabloids right now, he`s kind of coming off as the bad guy in this breakup.

I want to show you guys what Barbara Walters said about Tom today on ABC`s "The View." Let`s watch this together, OK?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARBARA WALTERS, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, CO-HOST, "THE VIEW": I do want to say this about Tom Cruise - for me, always, he is the nicest man.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He is.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

WALTERS: And everyone who works with him talks about how considerate he is, what a good man he is, what a nice man he is. And this has I think perhaps damaged his reputation.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

TURNER: Now, Barbara Walters was actually pointing out there, guys, that we typically don`t hear negative things about Tom.

And she`s right. In fact, we usually hear the opposite. So this takes us right to our SHOWBIZ flashpoint. Judge Young, what do you think? Do you think Tom Cruise is getting a bad rap?

YOUNG: I think Tom Cruise`s bad rap is based upon his affiliation with the Church of Scientology. It is clear, clear as day that that church is manipulative. It doesn`t care about the family structure. It cares about the individual.

And if you dare cross them in any way, you`re going to be exorcised. And Katie Holmes was concerned she would never see that daughter again if that daughter was put in that family she separated herself from.

And I thoroughly understand why she did what she did to protect her child. And Tom Cruise made a choice. His choice that he made - and we all make choices - the choice that he made was the religion of scientology, and that`s what I believe broke up the marriage. And that`s why this whole thing happened.

TURNER: But you know, we should say that the Church of Scientology has come out and said, "We`re not commenting on this divorce. It`s a private matter. We didn`t have anything to do with it and we`re going to keep it that way."

So we should mention that they have said that, that they really have not had a hand in this. So I also want to ask you guys though this, because just after Katie filed the divorce papers, here`s what Tom`s attorney, Bert Fields, told SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

He said, "Tom is very sad about it and he`s concentrating on the kids." Now, what we can say here though is Tom clearly does love their daughter, Suri.

But he did put aside his own feelings here and it seems like he gave Katie what she wanted. And it looks like that he was thinking about Suri`s best interests.

So Megan, I have to ask you, what do you think? Do you think that this makes Tom a bit of a hero in this case?

ALEXANDER: No. I think time will tell and we`ll see how this will play out. I just don`t think we can know right now, Nischelle. I just don`t think we`ll be able to declare who`s the hero and who`s not.

This is just too strong a word again for divorce. Look, how he proceeds in the future talking about his now-ex-wife, how he cares for his daughter, it will all play out. And we will see how Tom handles himself. The jury`s still out.

TURNER: You know, I think a lot of people have been on team Katie because they can`t stop thinking of that now-infamous moment when Tom jumped on Oprah`s couch and soon after - soon after they were a couple.

But you know, when I look back at that interview, I came across a little bit of a special moment. So watch this with me, guys.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

OPRAH WINFREY, MEDIA MOGUL: Whoo! Really?

TOM CRUISE, ACTOR: Yes.

WINFREY: Something happened to you. Something happened to you.

CRUISE: I`m in love.

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

TURNER: OK, guys. Hear me out here. I think it`s a guy in love. That was back in 2005. I know we don`t know what happened in their lives since then that led to this divorce.

But Judge Young, doesn`t watching that make you want to cut him just a little bit of slack thinking maybe - maybe, just maybe, this divorce is really hitting him hard?

YOUNG: Nischelle, let me ask you a question. What profession is Tom Cruise in? He`s an actor. I mean, it`s - you know, you can`t get any clearer than that. The man is an actor.

And the only thing that supersedes his acting is his belief in scientology. If you don`t think one plus one equals two, then I`ve got a bridge to sell you in New York.

ALEXANDER: Oh.

TURNER: Well, judge, tell me how much you`re going to sell it to me for and I just might buy it because I guess I`m Pollyanna. I feel a little bit like, you know what? He is human and he`s probably hurting in this as well.

(CROSS TALK)

ALEXANDER: He gets us every time because we`re "Top Gun" fans.

YOUNG: Absolutely.

TURNER: OK. All right. I`ll give this to you guys. Judge Young, Megan Alexander, thank you so much for joining me. Great stuff tonight.

YOUNG: Thanks for having us.

TURNER: Well, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Katie Holmes - they are part of an extremely exclusive club - Tom Cruise`s exes. But what can Katie expect from this membership? A blockbuster career? Maybe an Oscar? Why life after Tom could be Katie`s big break.

Plus, Katie`s hint. Her brand-new interview was done before her split. But was Katie dropping all kinds of hints about her divorce bombshell? The woman who spoke with Katie for that interview is here and she answers that very question and oh so much more. This is SHOWBIZ TONIGHT on HLN.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

TURNER: Beyonce`s ocean of support. Beyonce is celebrating rapper and producer Frank Ocean`s decision to open up about his first love being a man.

On her blog, Beyonce writes this note to Ocean, "Be fearless. Be honest. Be generous. Be brave. Be poetic. Be open. Be free. Be yourself. Be in love. Be happy. Be inspiration."

Many of hip-hop`s finest like Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and T.I. have supported Ocean`s coming out. By the way, Ocean`s new album, "Channel Orange," just dropped on iTunes.

Right now, Tom Cruise`s ex files. What Katie Holmes can learn from Tom`s ex-wives and girlfriends.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

TURNER: First, there was Mimi Rogers, then Nicole Kidman, and now, Katie Holmes. All three are now official members of the Tom Cruise ex-wives club.

But how did they do after their divorce from one of Hollywood`s biggest stars? And what`s next for Katie Holmes? Tonight, Tom`s ex files.

As Tom Cruise`s third marriage comes to an abrupt end, many are speculating what Katie Holmes` life will be like after Tom. Will Katie focus on fashion films or opt for a quieter life raising her daughter, Suri?

Well, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you that one thing`s for sure - Katie seems to be liberated and is making her own decisions, which seems to be exactly what Tom`s other exes did after their break-ups.

Joining me now here in Hollywood is Sophie Schillaci, who is a writer for "The Hollywood Reporter," and from New York, "Inside Edition" correspondent, Megan Alexander.

OK. I can tell you guys that Katie`s got a lot in the works to keep her busy after her life with Tom. First of all, she`s going to be starring in this new movie as a single mom, and you`ve got to love that, which she also wrote and she`s producing.

Her fashion line will debut at New York`s fashion week in September. And she just taped an appearance on "Project Runway." So Megan, you know what? This really seems like the sky`s the limit for Katie right now, doesn`t it?

ALEXANDER: I think so, too, and I think many people feel that the public has really been on Katie`s side through these past few weeks, through these divorce proceedings.

You know, it really became a story about a mother protecting her daughter and finding freedom again, as more supposedly is coming out about the Church of Scientology and its controlling influence and Tom Cruise sort of coming down as this domineering, controlling husband.

The side of the public is on Katie so she can only move forward and she can only move forward positively, I think.

TURNER: You know what, though? If Tom`s second ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, is any indication, then maybe Katie should actually focus on acting, because during her marriage to Tom, you know, Nicole had a good career.

She had roles in movies like "To Die For" and "Eyes Wide Shut." But it was after Tom that her career really exploded. In 2001, the year they divorced, "Moulin Rouge" came out. She won a Golden Globe for that.

She followed up with "The Hours," which, hello, she won the Oscar for. And then, she also earned an Oscar nomination for "Rabbit Hole" in 2010. Now, this leads to our SHOWBIZ flashpoint tonight - will Katie`s acting career now explode like Nicole`s did? The question is to you, Sophie. What do you think?

SOPHIE SCHILLACI, WRITER, "THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER": I`m sure we can expect a lot more from Katie right now. She`s got this movie "Molly" that`s reportedly set to go into production next week.

And the sky`s really the limit for her. She has so much that she can focus on. And I think she`s really, you know, ready to get going again.

And another thing she can actually do is take a cue from Gwyneth Paltrow who didn`t really have a scandalous divorce or anything, but she has this lifestyle brand, Goop.

And Katie, right now, is in a great position. She`s viewed as a strong mother. She`s very trustworthy. And if she wanted to go into full mommy mode, she can certainly do that as well. And I think the public would be really responsive to it.

TURNER: And you know, she does have a lot of interests, just like Gwyneth Paltrow. But let`s not forget about Tom`s first ex-wife here, Mimi Rogers.

You know, she was a popular TV and movie actress when they were married back in 1987. But after their divorce in 1990, she decided to get quiet.

And now, interestingly, and I love this, she`s a competitive poker player. Now, this leads to our next SHOWBIZ flashpoint - will Katie eventually choose a quiet life or lower profile? Megan, what do you think about that?

ALEXANDER: You know, I don`t know. I think time will tell. We don`t know yet what she`s going to do. But interestingly, both Mimi and Nicole never really talked about their life with Tom Cruise or their divorce.

Nicole Kidman - mum`s the word on it. I think, in many ways, it was very classy in terms of never talking about things. The big question is, will Katie talk? We`ll have to wait and see.

TURNER: Yes, that`s really interesting. Here`s another interesting fact. All of the exes, 33 when they split from him. So maybe there`s something about 33 that becomes - I don`t know - empowering when you`re with Tom Cruise.

But as Katie gets, you know, on this new life after Tom, what do you think she can learn from Tom`s other exes, Sophie?

SCHILLACI: Well, I think she really took a page - not a page. I think she took a lesson from Nicole`s divorce, because as much as we, you know, are proud of her career and she did a great job career-wise, she really had a tough time with that.

She was essentially blindsided by the divorce and she kind of lost her children. She never really spoke too much about it. But they did choose to live with their father.

And you know, Katie was really aggressive in this whole situation. She took the bull by the horns and she kind of used scientology against him a little bit.

And although the settlement - they kind of kept the details quiet so far. It seems like she`s gotten a lot of what she wants, so I think she really took a lesson from Nicole in that respect.

TURNER: I love that. Ladies, I love the insight. Sophie and Megan, thank you very much. Well, Tom and Katie`s divorce has been like opening Pandora`s Box when it comes to the tightly-guarded world of scientology.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They say that scientology is above your marriage, above your family, and even above to yourself, to the point you literally forsake a life. You give up your life for the purposes of the church.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

TURNER: Tonight, the woman who once ran the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center is here for a must-see headline-making SHOWBIZ newsmaker interview.

ANNOUNCER: TV`s most provocative entertainment news show continues right now.

(MUSIC)

TURNER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. A.J. Hammer is off tonight. I`m Nischelle Turner in Hollywood. Tonight, scientology secrets.

There`s been a lot of speculation that differences in belief in scientology may have had something to do with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes getting divorced.

But did Katie really want to make sure her daughter Suri was not raised as a scientologist? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT`s Kareen Wynter just talked with one of scientologist`s most famous defectors and outspoken critic. Kareen, I want to know - what did she reveal to you?

KAREEN WYNTER, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT CORRESPONDENT: Well, Nischelle, I just want to Montreal to a special conference involving people who claim they left organizations they considered cults.

That`s where I talked to Karen Pressley. Presley - she became a scientologist in 1982 and she spent the next 16 years in a series of high- level positions within the church.

And you know, at one point, she was managing all the scientology centers that dealt with celebs like Tom Cruise. But in 1998, Karen had a change of heart. She decided to leave the Church of Scientology.

And when I talked with her, well, she revealed some fascinating details about her life inside the secretive world of scientology.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(on camera) You had a very high ranking within the church. You were the director of the celebrity center. Why was it such a big deal to recruit these celebrities? You were there when Tom Cruise came in.

Mimi Rogers, his first wife, introduced him to scientology. You were there when Tom Cruise met Nicole Kidman, also brought her into the religion. Why was it so important?

KAREN PRESSLEY, FORMER SCIENTOLOGIST: Scientology wouldn`t be what it is without celebrities.

WYNTER: And your specific role was?

PRESSLEY: Well, I was the commanding officer of the celebrity center network. My job was to ensure that celebrities were recruited, that celebrities were well-serviced within our organizations, and also to open up new celebrity centers around the world.

At the time I was the commanding officer, we had 13 celebrity centers globally.

WYNTER: So what would you say to a Tom Cruise walking in?

PRESSLEY: I would promise him, you know, we could help him achieve his highest goals as a celebrity, as an artist and as an individual.

WYNTER: If you could say one thing to Katie Holmes right now, what would it be?

PRESSLEY: I so much respect her as a woman for taking a stand for her own integrity. Myself - my mother tried to get me out of scientology while I was involved and I wouldn`t listen until 16 years later.

She wanted me to reclaim my freedom and my life. When I was committed to scientology, I was a scientologist for 16 years, within the Sea Org for about 12 of those.

And when you sign that eternal contract - I signed a billion-year contract. So to sign that contract means you forsake your commitment to anything else in your life.

Your commitment to scientology is above your marriage, above your family and even above to yourself to the point that you literally forsake a life. You give up your life for the purposes of the church.

And in my case, in the case of a Sea Org member, which, by the way, David Miscavige pretty much appointed Tom with that sort of honor. You make that commitment for one billion years.

So you are pledging your future lifetimes on into eternity. That`s the level of commitment.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

TURNER: Wow. Kareen, a billion-year contract and commitment.

WYNTER: Yes.

TURNER: She has got some really interesting perspective there. But what is the Church of Scientology think now about Karen Pressley`s claims?

WYNTER: Good question. Actually, Nischelle, we just heard from the church for the first time. Here`s what they told me in the statement, "The church regrets that excommunicated self-serving apostates are sadly exploiting family matters to further their hate-filled agendas against their former faith." Wow.

TURNER: Well, we definitely know what they think about that then.

WYNTER: Yes.

TURNER: Kareen what did the church have to say, if anything, about Tom and Katie`s divorce?

WYNTER: They said - this is the church`s statement as well, "The church has no comment. This is and always was a private family matter, and the church will continue to respect their privacy."

TURNER: OK. You know, I know you`re still working on this story for us. You`re all over it. So what do we expect to hear about this story tomorrow from you?

WYNTER: I`ll show you why scientology has always worked to recruit celebs like Tom Cruise and how that`s been both a blessing and a curse for the organization. You won`t want to miss that, Nischelle.

TURNER: Kareen Wynter, great work. Thank you so much. We`ll hear from you again tomorrow.

Well, you don`t have to wait for this. Katie`s secret hints. Just imagine sitting down to interview Katie Holmes about her marriage to Tom Cruise and then, bam, six weeks later, Katie files for divorce.

And then, just days after that, Tom and Katie quietly settle their divorce without any mudslinging. That`s just what happened to "Elle" magazine editor, Maggie Bullock, who interviewed Katie for the new issue of "Elle" magazine hitting newsstands July 17th. Did Katie drop some big hints in the brand-new interview?

Maggie Bullock joins me tonight from New York. Maggie, OK, so we don`t have a lot of time because I want to get into a lot of the things that Katie revealed to you.

On being true to herself, here`s what Katie told you. Let me read this, "If something`s not OK, then I will make it known. I will deal with things the way my mom taught us girls how to be. She stressed listen, learn, always be strong and be true to yourself."

Now, considering the way that Katie filed for divorce from Tom so suddenly, Maggie, when you look back at this interview and what she told you, it almost seems like she was dropping a really big hint.

MAGGIE BULLOCK, EDITOR, "ELLE MAGAZINE": I think it was important to Katie to let people know that she`s a strong individual and that she has her own way of seeing the world and that she`s going to live her life on her own terms.

I mean, certainly, at the time of the interview, it wasn`t clear, the subtext of some of these statements. But I felt throughout the interview that she wanted it to be known that she`s standing on her own two feet.

TURNER: Yes, absolutely, and hindsight is 20/20 always. But Katie definitely seemed to bristle at the mention of Tom`s name when she said - his name when she said to you, "He`s been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that."

Once again, it sounds like she had some definite direction here. What was her body language telling you when she said that?

BULLOCK: You know, I actually found her to be pretty relaxed and pretty comfortable and surprisingly warm. I mean, we have this idea of Tom and Katie being very guarded and highly secretive.

And so in person, I found her likable, warm and incredibly open about everything but Tom.

TURNER: You know, I think it`s really interesting. You said she was open about everything - career. What about Suri? Was she open about, you know, Suri and how she`s been raising her and things like that?

BULLOCK: She really was, actually. She talked a lot about Suri to the point that I was a little surprised that she was willing to share as much as she did, just in terms her devotion as a mother.

She told me being a mother was the most important accomplishment of her life. And I feel like a lot of her decision-making has been fueled by that. She really put Suri first, as we all know.

TURNER: Interesting. Very interesting. Open about everything except for Tom Cruise. Maggie, I appreciate it. If you want to read the entire interview with Katie Holmes, make sure you pick up a copy of the new issue of "Elle" magazine that hits newsstands on July 17th. Once again, Maggie Bullock, thank you very much.

So everyone is talking about just how fast Tom and Katie settled their divorce. They made this happen in two weeks. So what can stars like Kim Kardashian and Halle Berry learn from Tom and Katie? SHOWBIZ TONIGHT uncovers the lessons learned from the Tom-Kat split.

And so many people can`t stop singing the praises about "50 Shades of Gray."

(MUSIC)

Oh, I love this. Yes, this is "50 Shades, The Musical." And you have got to hear the story behind how two men took the steamiest book on the planet and turned it into a toe-tapping viral sensation. This is SHOWBIZ TONIGHT on HLN.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

TURNER: So quick and classy way that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes settled their divorce this week was a rare sight in Hollywood - too rare.

In fact, SHOWBIZ TONIGHT can tell you there are certain squabbling Hollywood exes who can learn a lot from Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Now, we won`t tell you who. OK, on second thought, we will tell you.

SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has the lessons Hollywood can learn from the Tom-Kat split.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(voice-over) From divorce announcement to divorce settlement announcement in just 11 days. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes super quick split has left the celebrity world reeling with shock.

ALEXIS TERESZCUK, "RADAR ONLINE": This is amazing. This is probably a record in Hollywood in divorce settlements.

TURNER: But Tom and Katie have done more than set a Hollywood record. They`re setting an example for all of Hollywood to follow. In a town where long divorce battles are as popular as red carpet premieres, Tom and Katie are providing tons of lessons for Hollywood`s squabbling exes.

The first lesson these exes can learn from Tom and Katie - be adult about it. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, pay close attention.

TERESZCUK: Those two were only married for 72 days, and seven months later, they`re still fighting over their divorce. Tom and Katie had a five-year marriage and in 10 days they settle it.

TURNER: "Radar Online`s" Alexis Tereszcuk tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with a divorce battle that`s now gone on three times longer than their 72-day marriage, Kris and Kim are the exact opposite of Tom-Kat`s mature split.

TERESZCUK: Kim and Kris are fighting over everything. They`re fighting over their wedding, who made what kind of money. They`re fighting over the wedding gifts. Each one is trying to make the other one look like the bad guy.

And they`re not any closer to a settlement than they were seven months ago.

TURNER: Making matters worse, Kim and Kris aren`t winning any PR points with their eye-brow raising post-divorce antics.

Kris is in a tawdry tabloid drama with a woman he allegedly dated after Kim, while Kim is reduced to making cringe-worthy jokes about her quickie marriage on her reality show, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

KRIS JENNER, REALITY TV STAR: They`ve only been together what, six or seven years?

KIM KARDASHIAN, REALITY TV STAR: That`s a long time. That`s an eternity in my book.

K. JENNER: Yes, it`s more than 72 days for sure.

TURNER: No such silliness for Tom and Katie.

TERESZCUK: Tom and Katie acted like adults. Make Kim and Kris should step up to the plate and do the same.

TURNER: Which brings us to the second lesson Hollywood`s squabbling exes can learn from Tom and Katie - don`t trash each other. Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook, take note.

TERESZCUK: Tom and Katie have not disparaged each other at all, and this is a good thing. It`s why their divorce was settled so quickly.

TURNER: Compare that to Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook. Four long years after Cook cheated on Brinkley with a teenager, these two are still sniping at each other in court and on TV.

CHRISTIE BRINKLEY, SUPERMODEL: Every time I have any joy or any kind of success in anything, he has to try to destroy it.

PETER COOK, ACTOR: Ms. Brinkley doesn`t think - well, she thinks these agreements were crafted to govern me and me alone, that the rules don`t apply to her.

TURNER: The end result? Four years after their divorce, they`re still getting mocked and criticized for their way to public animosity.

TERESZCUK: There`s never really a PR battle won by trashing your ex. And it helps in the long run when there`s not a video clip of you saying bad things about your ex.

TURNER: And the third lesson Hollywood`s squabbling exes can learn from Tom and Katie - think of your children. Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubrey, listen up.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It was critical for their child, for this couple to be able to work things out quickly.

TURNER: By not subjecting their six-year-old daughter Suri to a long and bitter custody battle, Tom and Katie are getting tons of praise today.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They could not have done a more wonderful thing for their child.

TURNER: Someone should tell that to Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, who are well into a nasty two-year custody fight over their four-year-old daughter, Nahla.

TERESZCUK: She`s in the middle of a nasty tug-of-war. It seems like with Halle and Gabriel, it`s less about their daughter and it`s more they`re both so angry with each other that neither one wants the other one to be happy.

TURNER: But now, Tom and Katie have made it so they move on with their lives and so can Suri.

TERESZCUK: Ultimately, Tom and Katie did what was best for their six-year- old daughter. They set an example for everyone else in Hollywood.

TURNER: So listen up, Hollywood. Break-ups happen, but if you want to figure out a way you and your kids can go on with as little damage as possible, you should just ask yourselves, what would Tom-Kat do?

Reps for Tom and Katie tell SHOWBIZ TONIGHT they`re working to accomplish what`s in their daughter, Suri`s, best interest.

So it seems like "50 Shades" of anything sell these days, but a musical?

(MUSIC)

You have got to hear the story behind how the steamiest novel on the planet was turned into a sing-along.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

TURNER: Sex, bondage and Christian Gray. Doesn`t take much to realize that I`m talking about the paperback phenomenon, "50 Shades of Gray."

Clearly, people are longing for more and waiting for the film adaptation with bated breath. But that is a long way away. So people have come up with 50 versions of the novel on their own.

Now, one of our favorites here at SHOWBIZ TONIGHT is "50 Shades, The Musical." Here`s CNN`s Jeanne Moos for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: "50 shades of gray" has gone from mommy porn to musical. At least the musical won`t make you blush 50 shades. It`s relatively clean.

(MUSIC)

The musical pits the reader who loves the book against the reader who hates it.

(MUSIC)

The makers of this 2.5-minute musical are brothers.

VIJAY NAZARETH, CO-CREATOR, AVBYTE: The idea came up when I was in the subway and I saw all women reading it from like small girls, literally teenage girls, to grandmothers.

(MUSIC)

MOOS: Eventually a gay character makes his entrance.

(MUSIC)

There have been other musical tributes to this lady porn phenomenon, turning the verbatim words of the book into lyrics.

Jimmy Fallon featured "50 Shades of Gray" karaoke.

(MUSIC)

Seriously, that`s from page 277. Honest. Comedians mockingly vie to record the audiobook version, from Gilbert Gottfried to Ellen DeGeneres, though Ellen shows to paraphrase the overheated probe.

ELLEN DEGENERES, HOST, "THE ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW": He guides his hands across my secret garden. I think I`ll add some sound effects, if that`s OK.

MOOS: What`s been whipped up are sales. "The Wall Street Journal" reports the "50 Shades" trilogy has sold almost 20 million copies in the U.S. in five months. It took "The Dragon Tattoo" books three years to accomplish that.

And while some couples say the book`s done wonders for their love life -

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We don`t have a big bed but we sure get around it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.

MOOS: The musical has it both ways.

(MUSIC)

So they`ve written their mini-musical but have they read the book?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I did not read the whole book.

MOOS: And you just read a little bit?

NAZARETH: Passages.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s really - some of it is awful.

MOOS: No shades of gray in that book review.

(MUSIC)

(END VIDEOTAPE)

TURNER: That was CNN`s Jeanne Moos for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. And yes, I admit, I`ve read all three books.

Tonight, America`s Olympians in the buff. It`s the photo that`s got everyone buzzing. So which of your Olympians bared all for this nude photo shoot?

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

TURNER: The 2012 women`s indoor volleyball team served up some eye-popping images in the brand-new issue of "ESPN, the Magazine."

The ladies stripped down to show off their super-trained bodies in the issue that comes out on Friday. No doubt, this is going to spike a lot more interest in the upcoming London games.

Does Cat Woman fall in love with bat man in the new "Dark Knight" movie? Well, kind of. Anne Hathaway tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT she kind of loves Christian Bale.

And SHOWBIZ breaks "Idol" news. Is Adam Lambert going to be a judge? I asked executive producer Nigel Lythgoe in "The Buzz Today."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(voice-over) SHOWBIZ breaks news. "American Idol" executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, sets the record straight. Lythgoe snaps back at the rumors and tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT that he is not in talks with former "Idol" contestant, Adam Lambert, to join the judges` panel on the singing competition show.

NIGEL LYTHGOE, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, "AMERICAN IDOL": I can confirm with you I have not been speaking to Adam Lambert. But there are going to be lots of names coming up now.

It`s a bit like "X Factor," when they were looking for judges on "X Factor." Everybody`s name came up. It`s going to be the same with "American Idol".

Everything`s still up in the air, I have to say. Nothing is confirmed. I`m hopefully - you know, I`m going to push for Charlie Sheen and Jerry Lewis as judges on "American Idol." I`m not sure how far I`ll get with that. But I think that will be fun.

Cat Woman`s big Batman crush? In a brand-new interview with SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, Anne Hathaway, who plays Cat Woman in "The Dark Knight Rises," opens up about working with Christian Bale.

Hathaway tells us she`s a fan of Bale and his alter ego, Batman.

ANNE HATHAWAY, ACTRESS: I like him so much as a person. It`s hard for me to separate who he is as a person from who he is as an actor. Actually, they both have something in common, which is he`s totally honest. And he`s a good person and he`s a really smart person and a very original thinker.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

TURNER: Tonight, 50 shades of sex toys? The book is flying off shelves and it`s boosting sales of sex toys described in the novel. So why are average American women getting whipped up into a frenzy and even trying S & M? "DR. DREW" starts right now.
