Childhood Friend Describes Jodi Arias; Jodi Arias Trial

Aired April 04, 2013 - 20:30   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SANDY ARIAS, JODI`S MOTHER: Jodi has mental problems! Jodi would freak out all the time!

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "I had a dream last night that two people were charged in the case of Travis Alexander. One person was charged with murder and one was charged with conspiracy."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) and when she was -- she called me and started yelling. I said you know what? Have you ever thought of yourself as being bipolar?

SANDY ARIAS: Said Jodi is bipolar and she needs help!

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (INAUDIBLE) complained of having a stalker?

ALYCE LAVIOLETTE, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EXPERT: Yes, specifically, I know to a woman by the name of Reagan (ph). He said it specifically to the woman by the name of Lisa.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "So again, it was just one of his cycles. I`ve somehow managed to become his whipping girl. And we`re both addicted to it."

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Any type of indications of stalking activity from Ms. Arias to Mr. Alexander?

LAVIOLETTE: No, I didn`t.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "And we end up having makeup sex, or in this case, phone sex. We`ve explored about 90 percent of all our fantasies."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) abusive on the phone with her. You know, we could never ask her anything about her personal life.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "We`ve yet to pull over on the freeway and do it on the hood of the car in the middle of the day."

LAVIOLETTE: Verbal abuse is starting to escalate, as well, based on the text messages and the other print messages that I read.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "It actually wasn`t really talking. Well, dirty talk, I guess you could say. I`m just as naughty as he is. More, in fact."

(END VIDEO CLIP)

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Good evening. I`m Nancy Grace. I want to thank you for being with us.

Bombshell tonight. After slashing and shooting her lover to death, leaving his body in a dripping wet shower stall, Jodi Arias`s defense team does its best to drag murder victim Travis Alexander through the mud, with accusations like what? He wasn`t really a virgin at age 30. He wasn`t as successful as he claimed to be, or as Arias said he was, that he dated different women. So she shot him?

This as juror number five, booted off the jury, comes back to the courthouse in the last hours, and at this hour is in the courtroom. Why? Don`t know. That is a recipe for disaster.

And tonight, we obtain exclusive video of Jodi Arias as a bridesmaid. With us, taking your calls, the bride herself, Jodi Arias`s best friend since childhood.

In the last hours, for the first time, we hear Travis Alexander`s diary read in court, as we exclusively obtain over 600 unseen pages of Arias`s private diary.

We are live and taking your calls, camped outside the Phoenix courthouse. Let`s go straight out to Jean Casarez, legal correspondent with "In Session."

Jean, why is juror number five back in the courtroom?

JEAN CASAREZ, "IN SESSION": I don`t know, Nancy. I just got out of the courthouse, the courtroom. There she was. And I`m sitting there, and there she was. She is in the public gallery. She is the row behind Jodi`s family on the far end. She`s sitting there. She`s not on the edge of her seat anymore, as she was during every day of trial. But she is there.

And the judge gave an admonition to the jury when they came in, saying, I want to tell you juror five is in the public gallery. You are not to have any contact with her until after the trial. I saw several jurors scanning that public area after that admonition.

GRACE: Well, unleash the lawyers very quickly before we go back into testimony, Dwayne Cates (ph) joining me there at the courthouse. Danny Cevallos is with me, defense attorney out of New York.

First of all, out to you, Dwayne Cates. The reality is that the reason the judge admonished them is very simple -- uh-oh! Can you -- OK, hold on. Can Danny Cevallos hear me in New York?

DANNY CEVALLOS, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Sure can. I`m right here.

GRACE: Great. Liz, let me know when you get Dwayne Cates up, his satellite up.

Danny, it`s just this simple. It`s not anything negative toward the jury or toward juror number five. What the reality is, is that if any of these jurors make eye contact, significant eye contact, have a conversation, even if it is innocuous, innocent, completely innocent, it`s fodder for the defense to argue for a mistrial.

CEVALLOS: Absolutely. What`s going on now, the thing that the judge needs to safeguard against is this juror with the funky hair, she has become very close to these jurors over this long trial. So it`s inevitable that they`re going to make some eye contact or have some sort of relationship, even if they don`t speak, in the sense that she`s sitting right there in the courtroom, watching them do their job.

And they must have -- remember, these jurors were not told why juror number five was excused. They`re left to contemplate it. And that question is hanging in their head.

So now the defense needs to be very mindful. Is this communication going to warrant a mistrial? You better believe they`re not done moving for a mistrial because of juror number five. I can promise you that.

What kind of dynamic does this create...

GRACE: Exactly.

CEVALLOS: ... when a jury is exposed to a former juror who`s been kicked off. And the question has just been left open, Why in the world is the juror still in the courtroom?

GRACE: Everybody, we are live and taking your calls. And with me as we wait to take you back into the courtroom for testimony, a very special guest is joining us tonight, a woman that has stood by Arias from the very, very beginning, has known Arias since, I believe, about the sixth grade, has visited her behind bars, and finds it completely inconsistent, the murder, the stabbing of Travis Alexander, with the Jodi Arias that she knows and has loved for many, many years. In fact, Arias was actually in her wedding.

With me right now is Patti, the childhood best friend of Jodi Arias. Arias was actually a bridesmaid in her wedding, as I just mentioned. And she`s taking your calls, as well. Patti, thank you for being with us.

PATTI, CHILDHOOD FRIEND OF JODI ARIAS (via telephone): Hi. Thank you for having me.

GRACE: Patti, I know that you have been a long-time friend of Jodi Arias and that you have actually visited her behind bars. You were very, very close with her as recently as your wedding. Let`s see that beautiful video of Patti`s wedding.

You know, Patti, we recently heard -- there`s Arias in the pink bridesmaids` outfit. There is the bride, and a lovely wedding.

We have heard Jodi Arias`s parents recently on tape describing many, many problems that Jodi had, Jodi Arias had growing up, including growing pot as young as the 8th grade. They said that her friends would often call them, saying that Jodi Arias has got a problem and she needs help, begging her mom and dad to please help her.

Did you see any warning signs, Patti?

PATTI: Well, like I said, I did lose contact with Jodi for a few years because I did get married and I started my family. So there was a few years that I didn`t -- I`m sorry -- that I didn`t have any contact with Jodi. But the years that I was with Jodi every day or at least had phone conversations, you know, in contact with Jodi, I never saw any of those behaviors at all. No.

GRACE: So you guys knew each other all the way back to the 6th grade, right?

PATTI: Yes, that`s right.

GRACE: Well, you know, looking back on it, I think many, many people, including myself, consider those friends you had in childhood, in middle school and high school some of your very best friends. And those friendships last a lifetime.

You told me that -- you told us that it seemed surreal when you visited Arias behind bars. What did you mean by that?

PATTI: I`m sorry. It`s heart-breaking, you know, from somebody that you grew up with and you loved so much -- you know -- I`m sorry. It`s just really heart-breaking. But you know, it`s hard to believe that somebody that you grew up with and you loved and you shared so many memories with is being -- at that time -- at that time, I didn`t watch the trial at all. So I was thinking accused. But later on, I found out that she did admit to it. So I was -- it was surreal. And it`s heart-breaking.

GRACE: When you said "so many wonderful memories," what memories are those?

PATTI: Well, you know, of course, being in my wedding is one of them, and you know, just going to junior high together and spending every moment -- every waking moment together. She -- she took all my pictures for my wedding. And thankfully for her -- if I didn`t have her, I wouldn`t have had all my beautiful pictures that I had taken.

GRACE: So she took pictures at your wedding?

PATTI: Yes, she -- you know, because she`s such a beautiful artist and photographer. She offered as a -- gift to me for my wedding to take my pictures. And so she took my pictures after the wedding and made me this beautiful, beautiful wedding album.

GRACE: You know what`s ironic? And I very -- you may be able to understand this now that you have children, Patti, but I`m a very big scrapbooker and taking photographs all the time. Nothing can make me happier than pictures of my children.

It`s ironic that she took those pictures for you and she`s such a good photographer, when, in fact, she took the state`s exhibit photos. I don`t know if she really meant to or not, but photos that were during the killing. And that`s very ironic that I`m hearing this from you, that she took those beautiful pictures at your wedding, and now her pictures that she took are some of the most damning evidence against her.

I heard you mention that you were with each other practically every day. Did you know about her growing pot in the 8th grade and getting in trouble for it?

PATTI: Oh, I don`t really want to comment on that.

GRACE: Well, that`s OK. You know what? You know her in a very different way than I do or we do, and I fully understand that. You know, I`m just wondering how she acted at the wedding. You said she acted completely normal.

PATTI: Yes. Yes. You know, we had fun. We danced. And even though she took pictures, she took time out of taking pictures and enjoyed herself with dancing with us and just enjoying herself.

GRACE: What was she like growing up, Patti?

PATTI: I`m sorry?

GRACE: What was she like growing up?

PATTI: Well, what was she like growing up? She was amazing. She was a kind person. She was funny. Like, everybody knows she was a beautiful artist and photographer. She was athletic, actually. She`s extremely funny. And just everybody loved her. In fact, everybody just wanted to -- she was a great person. Everybody wanted to be Jodi`s friend.

GRACE: You know, her parents told police point blank that she had had mental problems, is the way they put it, and was deceptive them from a very young age. You never saw any of that?

PATTI: No, I didn`t. I didn`t see that at all. You know, I was with her every day. And we were kids and we had fun. We played. And you know, we just did kid things together. And I never recognized any of that. And you know, she was just a great person. And I feel that I was really blessed to have her as my friend while I did.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (INAUDIBLE) advise Ms. Arias to do?

LAVIOLETTE: They advised her to move on from the relationship, that Mr. Alexander has been abusive to women.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I liked (ph) him in the context of this...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Why don`t you review the portion I ask you to review.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can do that.

LAVIOLETTE: He is suggesting to Mr. Alexander that he has reason to believe that he mistreats Ms. Arias, that he is a flirt, that he has a history of not being particularly good with women.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If you were called to testify on Ms. Arias`s behalf, would you be happy about that?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, I would not.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Why not?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because she murdered my friend in cold blood.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Welcome back, everyone. I`m Nancy Grace. And we are live, taking your calls. With me, in addition to our reporters at the courthouse, our lawyers and our shrink, Dr. Bethany Marshall, tonight, we have a very special guest. Her name is Patti. She has been a friend of Jodi Arias since 6th grade.

Let`s go out to the calls. Karen in North Carolina. Hi. What`s your question?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hi, Nancy. I have more of an opinion than a question.

GRACE: OK.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Watching (ph) one of the interviews with Detective Flores, I think I got the idea of this fog that Jodi is claiming from him. He actually asked her in one of those interrogations, Did you just block it out of your mind? So I think that`s where she got the idea of this fog.

GRACE: Interesting. Out to you, Jean Casarez. The fog has very conveniently drifted in and drifted out. Today in court, I noticed that Arias has a new look, she has her hair pulled back off of her face. It is more of an all-American look.

What did we learn, Jean, from not only what went on in the courtroom today but from those interrogation tapes of her parents?

CASAREZ: Oh, her parents. Well, her mother was just devastated. I mean, you just see the emotion in her. And her mother talks about that she may have had a split personality disorder, and she gives examples of that. But Dr. Richard Samuels, the forensic psychologist that assessed her, he didn`t assess her with that. He determined that she did not have that split personality.

GRACE: Matt Zarrell, weigh in.

MATT ZARRELL, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Nancy, one thing we haven`t addressed here is the journal entries because Arias`s journal entries, particularly after the killing, are very significant, where Arias wants to know who killed Travis. She believes whoever killed Travis should get the needle. She also had a dream that two other people were arrested for the murder of Travis Alexander.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

GRACE: Welcome back, everyone. We are live and taking your calls, camped outside the Phoenix courthouse. We`re going to take you right back into the courtroom.

But with me right now, in addition to Jazlene Gonzalez (ph), Patti is with us, a childhood best friend of Jodi Arias, has remained her dear friend over all these years, even visiting her behind bars. In fact, Patti is so close with Arias that Arias was actually in her wedding.

Liz, let`s see that bridesmaids footage that we have obtained exclusively for you tonight, showing Arias in a completely different light. Here we see Arias probably the way that Travis Alexander first saw her, a completely different persona than what we have learned, the woman that was into witchcraft, that dabbled in wicca, that explored Buddhism, Hinduism, finally Mormonism, just changing from every man that she was with, like a chameleon. We see a very different person, possibly the person that Travis Alexander was first attracted to.

With me right now and taking your calls is Patti, Jodi Arias`s childhood friend. Patti, as you hear the evidence roll out in the courtroom, has your opinion changed at all about what you believe happened the day Travis Alexander was killed?

PATTI: Well, when I first found out about it, you know, I thought, Well, this -- this could not have happened. This definitely wasn`t my friend that did this, you know? It was two other people. But now that she admitted it, you know, I am now coming to terms that it really did happen. You know, it`s hard. It`s painful. And it`s -- I wish that -- I wish that she would have reached out for help before it came to all of this.

GRACE: You know, Patti, you have said that you wish you had picked up the phone to try to help her before she stabbed and shot Travis Alexander. But as our psychologist will tell you tonight, you could not have changed what happened. No, you could not have.

Does it scare you in any way when you realize the amount of time you spent with Arias, just like Travis Alexander, that she could have ever turned on you?

PATTI: You know, no, I don`t because I don`t believe Jodi was that person. Like I said, Jodi was a different person when I knew her than she is now. I believe people change over the years, and I think that`s just what happened to her.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SANDY ARIAS: She had a plane ticket to fly down to his funeral, but she got a flat tire on the way down and got a new tire for her car.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: "I have the perfect spot in the woods for us. It`s secluded and perfect for getting down. He has a videocamera now."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because she has never been honest with us.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The one charged with murder was in custody. And the one charged with of conspiracy was not yet arrested.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She used to call me in the morning, all happy, and call me an hour or two later in tears, crying and sobbing about something.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Mr. Alexander got very angry and he threw her down, straddled her and choked her.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She left the hour, never, because she would never tell us, she was secretive about that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

NANCY GRACE, HLN HOST: Welcome back, everyone. We are live and taking your calls as we`re camped out in front of that Phoenix courthouse.

Out to you, Alexis Weed, has the jury showed any signs of getting tired of hearing Travis Alexander dragged through the mud for what? Not being a virgin at age 30? Dating a string of women, not being as rich as Arias thought he was?

ALEXIS WEED, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: I will say that I see some yawns in the courtroom, Nancy, especially this past week, maybe it`s wearing on them. I can`t say but I know that the media feels it, too. So perhaps we both --

(CROSSTALK)

GRACE: OK. Put Alexis Weed up.

WEED: Probably a little wear.

GRACE: Alexis, I appreciate you filling in on what reporters and TV journalists, think, but I was asking about the jury.

WEED: I`m just saying we often --

(CROSSTALK)

GRACE: Because it doesn`t matter what you or I or anybody else thinks. Nobody. It doesn`t matter what a reporter thinks or an anchor thinks. All that matters is what the jury thinks. And I`m asking you what is the jury doing. I nearly fell off my chair when I heard LeViolette whining that Travis Alexander wasn`t really a virgin. Hello? Bombshell headline, we -- of course, he`s not, he`s 30 something years old. Also, that he`s not as rich as Arias had thought he was. That`s what that boils down to.

What? So, what, she murdered him? She capped him in the head because he`s not rich enough or he`s dating her exclusively or asking her to marry him? The jury is showing those signs of fatigue? That`s my question.

WEED: They`re showing signs of fatigue, I would say. I see yawns, I see juries holding their heads in their hands, I see them sit back in their chairs. I see a lot of those signs, Nancy, yes, certainly.

GRACE: Holding their head in their hands. That`s exactly how I felt when I heard that from LaViolette, who started off pretty, you know, innocuously. That`s all changed.

With me right now and taking your calls is the winner of season eight, "America`s Next Top Model." But that`s not why she`s here. I`m sure all of you have been fans of Jaslene Gonzalez for sometime. And there is certainly no argument that she is absolutely stunning. She is also a victim of domestic violence. Horrible, horrible domestic violence.

Jaslene, thank you for joining us. I was so stunned to find out that you had been a victim of domestic violence. I manned the Battered Women`s Center hotline for 10 years as a volunteer at night. And it is -- it`s never the person that you think would be that person. Although to even imagine a generality, a stereotypical, but I was stunned to find out that that had happened to you.

I would like to find out your analysis of Jodi Arias as a battered woman.

JASLENE GONZALEZ, VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AMERICA`S NEXT TOP MODEL SEASON 8 WINNER: Well, hello, Nancy, thank you for having me. And, yes, unfortunately, I was in an abusive relationship. And you know, he was someone that I actually loved. So it was very surprising and -- just a shock to know that someone that I loved actually treated me in that way. I believe that Jodi Arias`s trial and situation, I believe that she was emotionally abusive to Travis Alexander.

GRACE: I find that interesting, Jaslene -- everyone with me, the winner of season eight, "America`s Next Top Model," Jaslene Gonzalez. Why do you say you believe she was the abusive one?

GONZALEZ: I would say because to my knowledge, she was assuming that he was cheating on her. And it relates a lot to how my relationship, where the actual violent turn happened was because he always assumed that I was cheating. And reading -- going through my phone and reading text messages. And you know, going through my laptop and looking for information. Any type of information and turn it against me.

And like I said, I had had heard that she mentioned that. And I believe that that was -- that triggers abuse. And I don`t doubt that she threatened him. I don`t doubt that she questioned his sexuality. I don`t doubt that she even made fun of the way he looked. That is all emotional abuse. And I find it relatable to mine.

GRACE: Did your abuser actually make fun of the way you look?

GONZALEZ: I -- yes, he did. There was a lot of putting down.

GRACE: Very, very hard for me to believe. But I do believe you but it just doesn`t make any sense to me.

Everyone, also taking your calls is Jaslene Gonzalez who is speaking out and trying to reach genuinely troubled women that had been battered that need help.

Everybody, I`m here, we can go back in the courtroom. Let`s go dip into the courtroom, please, Liz.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What does that say to you about the nature of their relationship at this point in March of 2008?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Looks like a comfortable relationship where there is a lot of back and forth, and they`re able to -- that they`re both inviting one another to things. And it`s pretty, you know, during these periods, things are pretty OK.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right. And when somebody tells somebody -- in your own experience, when somebody says make yourself at home, does that mean that they`re welcome to be there?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, it does.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK. Are you aware of any other communications between Mr. Alexander and other women, where he complained of having a stalker?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And do you know specifically the women that he said that to?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He said it specifically I know to a woman by the name of Reagan, he said it specifically to a woman by the name of Lisa.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And everything that you`ve reviewed, the text messages, the e-mails, the journal entries, and you`ve reviewed Mr. Alexander`s journal entries as well, right?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, I have.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And in reviewing these information, did you ever see any type of indications of stalking activity from Miss Arias to Mr. Alexander?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, I didn`t.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: At this point in their relationship, does it appear that there is any type of stalking going on?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, it doesn`t.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And do you base that on Mr. Alexander`s own words, when he talks about inviting her over?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Objection, leading.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Sustained.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What do you base that on?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: On the nature of the relationship. On his willingness to have her over. On his -- you know, connection with her, as well as her connection with him.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JODI ARIAS, ACCUSED OF MURDERING TRAVIS ALEXANDER: I`ve been trying to put his death behind me. If I did anything that had anything to do with his death in any way --

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He makes her feel very special and throughout this relationship it is one of the things that she continues to say.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s pretty scary to know how close she was to me after what she had done just a few days before.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She was able to set a limit. She was -- she still had boundaries, and the boundaries were about stopping him at a place that she believed was a real violation.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She murdered my friend in cold blood.

(CROSSTALK)

ARIAS: If I tell you what happened.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You have to pay the price.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Welcome back, everybody, we are taking your calls. We are camped outside the Phoenix courtroom. Right now let`s go back in the courtroom.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: So based on Mr. Alexander`s words in that -- in that written communication, did you consider, based on your experience in dealing with men who have controlling issues or jealousy issues, do you -- how did you take -- how did you take that message from him to Miss Arias about her voice mail?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That he was upset, that her voice mail was full. He had not been able to get in touch with her for weeks. Her voice mail and then he told her to empty it out.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Objection. Hearsay.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Sustained.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right, so you got -- your impression was that he was upset about her voice mail being full?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right. And did -- and did you get the impression that he told her to empty it?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Objection, leading. Hearsay.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Objection sustained.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right. What was the impression, then, about how he told her to do it? What was your impression about how he told her to do it?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Ordering her to do it.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right. At the end of March in 2008, did you also review a written communication between Mr. Alexander and a woman named Chrishelle?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And during this communication, is this -- well, Chrishelle was another woman that he was communicating with, is that right?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, she was.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK. And in this communication, what was the overall subject matter of this communication?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It was graphically sexual. But also the impression was that she was a vulnerable woman, that she was married. She was --

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Lack of foundation.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Sustained.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Based on what she writes in her e-mails back to him, did you get an impression that she was --

(CROSSTALK)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: About her.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: -- in these text messages, are you starting to see anything like character assassination?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, indeed I am.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK. Can you tell us why this is character assassination versus name calling?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Because he is talking about her as less than human. Because he is calling her a pure whore, or make you look like a pure whore, which is like calling somebody pure whore. He`s talking about spitting -- people spitting in her face. He is calling her evil.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Those are things that are -- that are worse than just name calling?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, I think they`re worse than just name calling?

GRACE: But remember, all of this is based on what Arias has told her.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It`s like he`s picking a group of things to tear apart her character.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And he continues to tell her that she couldn`t -- she couldn`t get off her lazy butt to read what he had written to her?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And he called her a sociopath?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, he did.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And he tells her that he doesn`t want her apology, do you see that?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes. Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: But he wants her to understand how evil he thinks she is.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And he tells her that you are the worse thing that has ever happened to me. Do you see that?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And then he continues, he continues to call her a sociopath?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He does.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

GRACE: Everyone, we are live and taking your calls, camped out at the Phoenix courthouse. It has come to our attention that yes, as we all suspected and actually discussed right here on our program, Arias has had many, many problems behind bars.

Straight out to Alexis Tereszcuk with Radaronline.com. Alexis, what have you learned?

ALEXIS TERESZCUK, REPORTER, RADAROLINE.COM: We have learned that Jodi has had seven disciplinary actions taken against her over her years in jail. I can go through each of them if you want, but basically one of them, I think the most important one is she actually got in a fight with her cellmate. The cell mate pushed her against the wall, kicked her, Jodi claimed, guess what, self-defense in that instance.

That was in July 27th of 2009. One thing she seems to be doing is stealing pens. There were three different instances, one in 2009, one in 2010 and again in 2011 where she steals two pens. One time she helped -- hid them under the sink, another taken under her bunk and a third time she hid it in her bottle of shampoo.

The other disciplinary action was taken against her, she had unauthorized creams in her cell, they were anti-itch, antifungal and acne cream. And then they didn`t say what they were but on January 1st, 2010, Jodi was found with 19 unauthorized pictures in her cell. All of these things were recorded by the jail.

She`s got a rap record, you know, longer than her arrest problems. She`s only been arrested once, for murder. She`s been in trouble seven times behind bars.

GRACE: To Dr. Bethany Marshall, psychoanalyst, author of "Dealbreakers." Weigh in, Bethany.

BETHANY MARSHALL, PSYCHOANALYST, AUTHOR OF "DEALBREAKERS": Nancy, isn`t this just a part of her offending pattern? After she killed Alexander, what did she do? She wrote and wrote and wrote all these massive lies about him. Character assassination. She is the one who used the pen to engage in massive character assassination.

I`m not surprised she`s stealing pens behind bars. She needs them so she can write more lies. Pictures? She broke into his Facebook to sort of look at pictures. She used pictures to frame him saying that he was looking at pictures of little boys. So remember she wrote that note in the -- in the margin of the magazine to get out to a friend, a male friend of hers, while she was being interrogated?

So she used the pen there to send a secret message. So hence her love of pens. But I think Jaslene is right. Who`s the abuser? It`s Jodi. Why? She slashes his tires. She breaks into his Facebook. She vilifies him. I would love for the domestic violence expert to talk about that, that perpetrators, abusers always vilify the other person.

GRACE: Unleash the lawyers, Dwane Cates, Danny Sovalos.

Out to you Dwane Cates. You know, she can get additional time behind bars for misbehaving behind bars. To me, it`s just further acting out. It`s part of a long, long history. And to have a fight with another cellmate and claim self-defense? There`s an echo. Self-defense.

DWANE CATES, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: You know, Nancy, it probably was self- defense. I mean, you know, there`s a lot of not nice people in jail, you know. She could have been attacked.

(CROSSTALK)

GRACE: Yes, like Jodi Arias.

CATES: And of course she likes -- of course she likes the pens. She likes to draw. You`ve seen the pictures that she draws. They won`t give her pens in jail. She`s been there four years. She`s got these ticky-tacky write-ups.

(CROSSTALK)

GRACE: Hey, you know what? Put him up. Please, you`re really, really -- you`re singing to the wrong choir here. Don`t come to me, poor Jodi has been behind bars for four years. Because as far as I`m concerned, you know what? Where`s Travis Alexander been for the last four years? You know what --

(CROSSTALK)

CATES: But we`re talking -- but we`re talking about her.

GRACE: Started to (INAUDIBLE) deaf.

CATES: We`re talking about her --

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

GRACE: We remember American hero, Marine Lance Corporal Kevin Cornelius, 20, Ashtabula, Ohio. Purple Heart, Joint Service Achievement medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medals. Parents Valerie and Gerald, step parents, Bob and Marlene. Brother Eric, served Afghanistan.

Kevin Cornelius. American hero.

And now straight into the courtroom.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You may continue. Overruled.

GRACE: Right now Martinez is on cross examination with LaViolette.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: True.

JUAN MARTINEZ, PROSECUTOR: And now, what we really have in this particular field is what you do, correct? You have somebody who has experience, right?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, I want to hear what you`re talking about. Like can you tell me --

MARTINEZ: You have experience in dealing with what you alleged to be battered women.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I do.

MARTINEZ: And with regard to that experience and making a determination whether or not an individual is a battered woman, basically what you have available to you are clinical interviews, right?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That`s one thing that we have available.

MARTINEZ: Right. And basically a clinical interview is you sitting across from the person that may or may not be a victim of battering and talking to them, right?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That`s one of the things I use.

MARTINEZ: Right. That`s what you do, right?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That`s one of the things I do.

MARTINEZ: That`s one of your main instruments, if you will, in trying to determine whether or not the situation --

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It is not my main instrument, Mr. Martinez.

MARTINEZ: Is it one of the items that you use?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It is one of the things that I use, correct.

GRACE: Everyone, tonight, our thoughts and prayers go out for our boss, HLN`s VP, general manager, Scot Safon. Thank you to Nurse Judy and the ICU team taking care of him but Scot, we miss you, please get well, and come home to us.
