Justin Bieber Arrested for DUI

Aired January 23, 2014 - 19:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL, HOST: Tonight, breaking news. An incoherent, seemingly drunk "F"-bomb-dropping Justin Bieber is arrested and hauled off to jail. And right now, we just got this in moments ago. It`s on TV for the first time. Take a look at this brand-new cell phone video of the drag racing that Justin Bieber was allegedly involved in that some young women, some girls shot moments before Justin Bieber was arrested. Check it out.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What are you doing? Oh, my God!

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my God. Justin got pulled over.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Justin got pulled over. Go! What are you doing?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my God.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Unbelievable video. Moments later the 19-year-old pop superstar was slapped with cuffs for alleged DUI, resisting arrest and having an expired license, all after a wild night of drag racing, double the speed limit, in his yellow Lamborghini.

Now look at Bieber`s mug shot, defiant and smiling. You will not believe who TMZ says was right there with him as he got into big trouble.

Good evening. I`m Jane Velez-Mitchell coming to you live.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

(INDISTINCT CHATTER)

(CAR HORN)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Unbelievable scene. Cops say at about 4 in the morning, the pop superstar`s entourage blocked off this residential street in Miami Beach with two SUVs and created a racetrack so Justin Bieber could drag race with his friend, rapper Crazy Khalil Sharief. Bieber was allegedly going twice the speed limit, at 60 miles an hour, against the other guy, who was in a Ferrari.

Cops finally caught up to Bieber`s yellow Lamborghini. They say Bieber became belligerent towards the officers, cursing at the cops, dropping "F" bombs, and resisting the officer`s commands.

Bieber failed a field sobriety test. Cops say he was incoherent and in a, quote, "stupor," asking them, quote, "Why the `F` are you doing this" and "What the `F` did I do," repeating those questions over and over again.

Cops say Bieber later admitted he`d been drinking, smoking marijuana and taking prescription meds before getting behind the wheel. This afternoon, Justin Bieber faced a bail hearing as a Florida judge read the charges, the pop heartthrob dressed in jailhouse orange like a common criminal.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So the total bond will be $2,500, broken down $1,000, resisting without violence, $1,000 for the DUI and $500 for the expired driver`s license. Is there anything else before me involving Mr. Bieber?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, your honor. But thank you very much for hearing us right away. We appreciate your honor`s courtesy.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You`re welcome.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Just $2,500 to bail out? That`s less than the pocket change for the teen who made $58 million last year. Those who party with him, speaking of pocket change, say he literally puts more money down a stripper`s bra.

Tonight, backlash growing over Justin Bieber`s apparent lack of remorse, brazen attitude. Minutes after being released, Bieber hops on top of his SUV and waves to fans swarming him. Everybody immediately thought of Michael Jackson dancing on his SUV at his arraignment. Obviously, Michael Jackson`s life ended in tragedy, with drugs ending his life. Is Justin Bieber destined to become the next fallen superstar? We hope not.

But tonight we`re digging into new reports, TMZ claiming Justin Bieber`s own father, Jeremy Bieber, was with him around the time of his arrest for drag racing and DUI.

I want to hear from you. What do you have to say? Call me: 1-877- JVM-SAYS, 1-877-586-7297.

Straight out to the Lion`s Den. Bieber admits to mixing booze, prescription drugs and pot, according to cops.

Straight out to Radar Online`s Jen Hager. You`ve got breaking news. Jen, where is Justin Bieber tonight and what are you learning?

JEN HAGER, RADAR ONLINE: Well, RadarOnline.com is reporting that Justin Bieber`s father, Jeremy Bieber, who is 38 years old, and who as you said, was with his son last night, allegedly, around the time he was arrested, is currently, as of right now when we go on the air live in a bar with his son in Miami. And there are beer bottles pictured around Justin Bieber. His father is seen in the pictures drinking.

So instead of taking his son to rehab, which he clearly needs, he takes his son to a bar. And I think that`s probably part of the bigger problem that we need to talk about here, is that the parental influences in Justin`s life are non-existent.

You know, he`s 19 years old. As you said, he made $58 million last year. It`s too much too soon for this kid who is under a microscope and clearly needs help. But who`s going to step in and give him the help that he needs?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: We`re going to get to the father in a second. And I`ve got to say, just listening to what cops have to say about Bieber`s attitude is hair raising.

Cops say Bieber refused to take his hands out of his pockets during the arrest, and he was dropping "F" bombs left and right, that he admitted to cops that he was drinking, smoking pot and taking prescription meds.

So I have to go to Jamison Monroe, founder and CEO of the Newport Academy and an addiction specialist. You see this wild and crazy scene, the scene of chaos. These girls screaming and yelling. You see the drag racing. He gets arrested. And then he is belligerent allegedly, toward the cops. Then he admits to them, yes, I`ve been drinking, smoking pot and taking prescription meds. That`s according to reports. The cops say Justin Bieber told them that. What do you make of it?

JAMISON MONROE, FOUNDER/CEO, NEWPORT ACADEMY: Jane, you and I both know there`s a line. You know, experimentation, teenagers, kids, they`re going to experiment with drugs and alcohol. But there is a line. And that line is once you start putting yourself and others in danger, when you take drugs and get behind the wheel and start driving, you`re putting others` lives and y our own at risk and that`s just not cool anymore.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Let`s go out to the phone lines, because they are lighting up.

Lisa, Indiana, what do you have to say about Justin Bieber tonight?

CALLER: Yes. Hi, Jane. I`m so sick about -- hearing about Justin Bieber. You know, he`s no better than anybody else. Twenty-five hundred dollars, that`s pocket change to him. If it was any other ordinary citizen, he would still be behind bars.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I certainly agree with you in the sense that there have been many close calls for Justin Bieber. Neighbors say he spit at one of them. He was accused of egging a neighbor`s house. He was investigated for felony vandalism. But so far he`s not arrested. The guy staying at his house was arrested. We`re going to get to that in a second.

Now yesterday, Bieber`s dad, Jeremy, tweeted, suggesting that he, the dad, was in Miami. The tweet simply said, "Miami," which is where all this craziness is happening.

Then he Instagrammed a photo of himself with his superstar son and rapper Crazy Khalil on the beach. That`s the guy that Justin was drag racing against. Then hours later, all hell breaks loose.

Now reports say the dad actually fixed -- There`s the shot of the three of them. OK? That`s dad, Justin and Crazy Khalil. The two young men were involved in a drag race according to cops, and that`s the father of Justin.

OK. When Justin was released from court today, the dad was reportedly there to pick him up.

I want to go to Kinsey Schofield. You`re a blogger, social media strategist. You have information about the dad, because you know Justin`s manager. What do you know about the influence of this guy on Justin? Because reports are claiming that he actually set up -- cordoned the area - - helped cordoned the area where his son, while under the influence, went drag racing, a situation that could have resulted in death.

KINSEY SCHOFIELD, BLOGGER: Yes. I have had the pleasure of meet meeting and spending time with Scooter Braun, who is a great influence on Justin Bieber. He`s the most ambitious, creative person in the music industry right now, Scooter Braun.

And he`s had difficulty with Jeremy, because he got Justin on this path. He`s the one that sent Justin off on his career. And Jeremy, who seems like a total opportunist, swoops in and is going with Justin to buy all this gaudy jewelry, getting his ears pierced, taking him to the tattoo parlor, which is totally against Scooter Braun`s brand that he built around Justin Bieber.

So I do know that Scooter Braun has fought violently to get Justin on the right path. And Jeremy is having so much fun with it, almost an absentee father until his child was a household name. He swoops in and totally distracted Justin from the morals and values and goals that Scooter had put forth for him.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, when your kid makes $58 million a year, suddenly, that`s certainly incentive to show up. I want to play once again, because we`ve got a super fan of Justin Bieber`s, a Belieber on the phone, a young woman, Estefania Moron, who was there outside the jail today when Justin Bieber was released.

First, I want to show the crazy scene from last night. Let`s listen again. Again, we just obtained this. Listen, and we`re going to talk to Estefania.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Go! What are you doing?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my God, he`s going to get in a crash!

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, my God, Justin just got pulled over.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Go! What are you doing?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. We`re going to talk to Estefania.

Now, Estefania, you were there today when he was released on bail. And we do have some video of Justin with the hood, walking out and pulling a Michael Jackson, jumping on his SUV, on the hood of it and waving. Did you -- what was -- what was your impression of Justin Bieber`s attitude when he walked out? Was he defiant or was he embarrassed or what?

ESTEFANIA MORON, JUSTIN BIEBER FAN (via phone): I think he -- I think he was confused. I think he shouldn`t have done that, first of all. He just came out of jail and he shouldn`t have done that.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: So you`re a fan. Does any of his behavior lessen your enthusiasm for him?

MORON: Not really. Because he`s been there for us. He`s -- he`s had, like, songs that helped us through depression. And now he`s going through depression, and he needs us more than ever. And we`re going to -- we`re going to help him out of this depression that he`s going through.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: You`re going to help him out of his depression, as a fan? OK. Well, that says a lot.

You know, Justin Bieber has 40 million -- 49 million actual Twitter followers. And these fans are absolutely Beliebers, is what they call them. And Estefania Moron, she`s one of them, was outside jail. She was right there in that crowd, and she`s one who says it wasn`t right what he did, but she forgives him. She feels he`s depressed, and she wants to see him get better.

Others are saying he`s a spoiled brat who needs to be punished.

On the other side, we`re going to show you video of Justin as a young man, the clean-cut kid that was discovered on YouTube. What happened?

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He did do a Breathalyzer. Since he admitted to doing narcotics, we brought in a drug recognition expert.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Justin Bieber, there he is. Moments after bailing out -- accused of a DUI, driving on an expired license and resisting arrest -- he pulled a Michael Jackson, jumping on his SUV to wave to his fans as he drove off.

Now he`s in trouble on both coasts. You know he`s being investigated for felony vandalism in Los Angeles and facing these new charges in Miami.

Tonight, we ask is Justin Bieber now more famous for his nasty behavior than for his hit songs?

You know, you almost forget he used to be this really super clean-cut kid from Canada. At 13, Bieber entered a singing competition for fun and won second place. He posted the video of himself on YouTube. Check out one of his earliest videos.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

(MUSIC)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Wow, is he talented? He taught himself music. He taught himself to play guitar.

And this guy you`re looking at here is music executive Scooter Braun. He discovered Bieber on YouTube. About four years ago, Bieber landed a huge deal with Usher, thanks to him.

You know, Wendy Murphy, former prosecutor and author of "And Justice for Some," he went from a normal small-town kid living a blue-collar life. Suddenly, his talent, which is extraordinary, was discovered. He becomes the most famous teenager on the planet, making $58 million a year. Is it enough to drive anyone to extreme behavior?

WENDY MURPHY, FORMER PROSECUTOR: Well, you know, I think at a minimum he should have been better managed to anticipate this. I mean, guys who enter the NFL and so forth, they go from zero to 100 fast, and they`re usually people around to make sure that it doesn`t become a disaster.

You know, on the one hand you can`t feel too bad for the guy, because he`s got everything he wants, and he`s doing destructive things, knowing it`s wrong. He`s got parents that are with him. We can judge them all day long. The fact is, he`s not just hurting himself. If that were it, if it`s just a guy doing self-destructive behavior, it`s not a crime to jump on top of the limo and act like an idiot. But he`s putting other people`s lives in danger. And that`s where we really have to draw the line.

The good news is in Miami, the cops didn`t treat him like a superstar. They pinched him and he went to jail. He got arraigned, and they let him go just like anybody else. And that`s good. So he is, I think, starting to feel the heat.

Because a guy like this, you know, a couple years ago, had he done something like this, they might have given him a pass. This is a sign that everybody around him thinks that he`s on the brink of doing something extremely bad.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, Robi Ludwig, Dr. Robi, we spoke in the makeup room, and you said you actually feel sorry for him. Now, you just heard Wendy Murphy say, you know, he could have killed somebody driving in a Lamborghini in a residential neighborhood.

ROBI LUDWIG, PSYCHOTHERAPIST: Right. That`s serious. I know. And I don`t want to be an apologist for Justin Bieber.

But I think we have to remember that he is a 19-year-old teenager. And it is very normal developmentally for teens to rebel, for them to be anti-authoritarian. So in some way, Justin Bieber is making all of these mistakes in front of the camera.

The danger is when you have that much money, and you have people around you who don`t tell you no. That is a very toxic and dangerous scenario.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Including your own father reportedly.

LUDWIG: And I just want to say, too, the fact that his father is acting more like a pal is also very destructive. Because Justin knows on some level his father should be setting limits on him, and his father isn`t. And that gets a child to feel not loved.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And by the way, we tried to reach the dad. He`s invited on our show any time. We would love to hear his side of the story on the phone lines.

Out to the phone lines. Erin, West Virginia, what do you have to say about Justin Bieber tonight?

CALLER: My opinion is with Justin Bieber being a kid idol and getting rich off his fans` money, he should set a better example than being intoxicated and behind the wheel. It goes to show you how much he`s looking out for himself. I mean, what if one of them was to get hit?

And then $2,500 bond, I mean, come on. With so many charges already that he`s had. Now with me not being famous, probably not going to happen to me. I mean, alcohol gets up to more extreme than that. The fault goes out to both Justin and the ones who sent him off with a slap on the list.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, you know, Rosie Noesi, we were also talking beforehand, and you had a theory as to why he is acting out in this manner.

ROSIE NOESI, RADIO PERSONALITY: I feel like he`s a lost puppy. He has too many "yes" people around him. Nobody is calling him out. You know what I`m saying? And then his own father is being his friend? I have one word" conservatorship. But you know what, who`s going to do it? Is it going to be Scooter, his manager? He`s the only one that makes sense. He`s not in the picture right now.

ANNA YUM, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: At the same time -- I agree that no one is really looking out for him right now and no one`s really looking out for his best interests.

But Jane, back to what you were saying about the officers? I mean, I for one don`t necessarily take what an officer has to say at face value. Because if you think about it, the officer said that Justin Bieber smelled of a strong alcoholic beverage. And then he smelled on his breath. Justin blew a .04 percent blood alcohol level. That`s about two to three drinks max, which leads me to believe, well, if the officer is capable of potentially exaggerating that fact, what else is he capable of exaggerating.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He`s 19 years old.

(CROSSTALK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: One at a time ladies. Hold on a second. What did you want to say, Wendy?

MURPHY: I`m just saying it was drugs, too. He acknowledged taking drugs. When you mix drugs even with a little bit of alcohol, you get, you know, a big problem. So, you know, doesn`t matter that it was a .04. The guy was wasted. And he absolutely needs rehab, and sometimes the rich kids don`t go until they go to jail.

YUM: I do think he needs treatment. He definitely needs rehab, and there`s no ifs, ands or buts about that.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, there`s a couple of things we`re going to talk about on the other side. It`s very hard to get a 19-year-old into treatment. It happens, but it`s harder than getting somebody who`s been through a lot of hard knocks and is in their 40s into treatment, because they`ve already done their partying in their 40s.

So how are we going to get this kid help?

And also, you won`t believe the news that`s just coming in about the alleged prescription meds he was taking and where he got them from. Stay right there.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The officer at that time did place Mr. Bieber under arrest.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Rented Lamborghini. Ace of Diamonds strip club. Nineteen years old. Like nothing good can come from those combinations of words.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The Bieb is busted.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

(MUSIC)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Justin Bieber, one of the biggest stars on the planet and tonight, he`s facing three charges in Miami and being investigated for a possible felony in Los Angeles, accused of vandalizing a neighbor`s home. His acting out flies in the face of what his mother, Patty, claims she taught him about growing up famous.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PATTIE MALLETTE, JUSTIN BIEBER`S MOM: I`m just hoping that I instilled a lot of good morals in him, and so hopefully, that will help keep him grounded. I just talk to him and tell him that your gifts don`t make you worth any more than anybody else.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But angry neighbors in this exclusive Los Angeles community say he acts like he`s above the law. Right now he`s under felony investigation for allegedly egging his neighbor`s house, causing $20,000 in damage.

Last spring, you may remember he lost his temper with the paparazzi in London. Watch as he bursts out of his SUV and shoves a photographer.

And in July, his tour bus was stopped at the Canadian border. Cops found marijuana. Of course, the pop star was missing, not on the bus.

And then there`s that leaked video of Bieber peeing in a mop bucket while casually shouting, "Bleep Bill Clinton."

Want to go to Marc Herrold, former D.C. police officer. With these new charges tonight in Miami, is it possible that he could end up being deported back to Canada? He is a Canadian citizen, not American.

MARC HERROLD, FORMER D.C. POLICE OFFICER: Well, it`s remotely possible. What matters is what he`s convicted of, not what he`s been charged with. And from what I see right now, the most dramatic could have been resisting arrest but the judge said it was non-violent. Doesn`t look like it will be problematic.

Here`s the other thing. He`s not a green card holder. He`s not a lawful permanent resident. He`s here on a very rare visa called an O via for people of extraordinary ability. They may not be able to deport him or remove him, but they may not renew that visa when it expires. So he may have problems with immigration to stay in the country long-term, but I don`t think at this point that he could be deported.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. So in other words, they won`t renew his visa. That`s interesting.

Let`s go to Tina, Alabama. What do you have to say about Justin Bieber tonight? Tina, Alabama.

Oh, Tina!

You know, I want to go back to Jamison Monroe, founder and CEO of the Newport Academy. I`m a recovering alcoholic with 18 years of sobriety. I look at this young man and remember the way I was when I was 19. I was pretty -- I was pretty out of control. I didn`t have $58 million and an entourage, but I still got into a little bit of trouble. Not a lot. But I was drinking. I was drinking.

And here`s the thing. If I go back to my 19-year-old self and someone were to tell me at that time you can never have a drink again. I`ve been 18 years sober now. But you know, at the time, it would have felt like a death sentence. Because in my little teenage head, I had a lot of partying left to do. Isn`t it harder for teens to hit bottom and get sober?

MONROE: Absolutely, Jane. You and me both. When I was 18, I got a DUI, as well, and spent some time in treatment and didn`t get sober for a few more years after that.

But here at Newport Academy we treat 15-20-year-olds, and so we`re dealing with this every day. And primarily, our kids are suburban teenagers that are -- their weekend diet is exactly what Justin is describing: a little bit of prescription pills, some alcohol, some pot. He`s got the cocaine around him, obviously.

And typically, where there`s smoke, there`s fire. And as we know, this is a progressive disease, and so it`s -- it`s getting a little bit worse every time. Now, he`s been arrested for drunk driving.

And, you know, we`ve seen this tape played through. And I really don`t want to see another Heath Ledger, another Andy Irons. Kids are probably too young to remember River Phoenix.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes, let me jump in for one second, because I want to go to Jen Hager, Radar Online. I understand that you continue to get new information in. What are you learning now?

HAGER: Well, we are learning that he was supposed to be on his way back to Los Angeles, and he`s still in this bar with his father.

I want to go back to something that one of your guests said about Justin being deported. If he is convicted of the felony vandalism here in Los Angeles, if he is eventually charged, and it looks like there`s enough evidence, his visa, the O visa could automatically be revoked, and he could be immediately deported back to Canada. That is probably one of the biggest legal hurdles he is going to be facing going forward. Because if he pleads "no contest" in the felony vandalism case, he still gets deported back.

And there is a very strong movement in his gated community out in Calabasas to get him out of the community and out of the country. One of his neighbors, one of the reasons why he was so vigilant in documenting all the evidence in the vandalism case is because he wants him out of the country. Go back to Canada.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, that certainly would send a message to all the stars who have gotten away with so much that never seem to do any hard time or any time at all. It would send a symbolic message that those days, that era is over. We shall see.

On the other side, new information again about where did he get the pills that he was taking. You will not believe what we`re learning tonight.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JUSTIN BIEBER, SINGER: You know, I`m always pretty focused before I go out there. You know, I think that tonight`s just going to be a great show like every other show.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: All right. We`ve got breaking news. There is Justin Bieber after being released from jail, after posting $2,500 bond, accused of DUI, driving with an expired license and resisting arrest.

And we just got video in just a little while ago, a couple of minutes ago and we`ll play for you. It is video of the drag racing and that`s why cops pulled him over. Justin Bieber is in the yellow Lamborghini. And you`re going to hear some young ladies who are videotaping it on their cellphones and it just captures the chaos. Listen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What are you doing?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Justin`s going to get -- oh my God, he`s going to get in a crash.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Please, will you let me --

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh my God, Justin just got pulled over.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Justin got pulled over.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is crazy. Go, Amanda. What are you doing?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh my God.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Ok yes. I got to tell you that according to police, published reports indicate that police are saying that Justin Bieber, after he was arrested, although he initially resisted he ultimately told them -- according to published reports -- that he was drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana and that he had taken prescription meds.

And we are learning some new information tonight about where he may have gotten those meds. But I have to tell you we can`t independently confirm it now. TMZ is reporting that cops were told by Justin Bieber he got the prescription anti-anxiety pills from his own mother -- his own mother.

And I don`t know if that`s true. We haven`t been able to talk to his mother. But I think if that is true, that would be a real shocker. We have already established that the father is there with him and the claims are that he was there while Justin is partying and drag racing. We don`t know if that`s true but that`s the published report.

And then if it is true, Robi Ludwig, psychotherapist that the mother is supplying anti-anxiety pills, what does that tell you.

ROBI LUDWIG, PSYCHOTHERAPIST: It is really disturbing. I`m just wondering if he took the medication -- stole medication from his mother, and then said he got it from his mother. That sounds like a much more likely scenario.

Listen there are some cases and it`s very bad and I would never recommend it where mothers will say to their children, if you`re feeling a little anxious or if you`re having difficulty falling asleep, have a little of what I have. We must have the same thing. And of course, they are playing doctor and it`s very dangerous.

Given what I have seen of the mother, I don`t know her, I would find it very unusual to see that scenario playing out that way.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And let me say this. Number one, she is not there in Miami with him so how would she give him the pills. Number two, we can`t independently confirm that. This is a published report, TMZ is claiming this. But let`s listen to what Justin Bieber`s mother, Pattie, said just last year.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PATTIE MALLETTE, JUSTIN BIEBER`S MOTHER: I don`t think of myself as a superstar`s mom. Justin is just Justin. And so parenting him is I think like parenting -- like anybody parenting a child -- 15, 16, 17, 18. We just have a different set of circumstances.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Now, Pattie, we know was just a teenager when she had Justin. And she wrote a book. And in the book she admits that she struggled with drugs and alcohol addiction when he was not even born. Again, we cannot independently confirm the claims by TMZ that Justin got those pills from his mother.

But I want to go back to Kinsey Schofield, you`re a blogger who knows something about the family. Where is his mother

KINSEY SCHOFIELD, BLOGGER: Well, his mother is a very sweet godly woman. And I think she`s literally just taking a step back praying. She`s very spiritual, you know. She`s actually reached out on Twitter and asked Justin`s fans to please pray for him. And so I think she`s just trying to be quiet right now, get with god and deal with it personally.

But we are a product of our environment. You have to look at Justin and you have to look at his parents and know that he`s behaving the way he is partially because of the environment he`s in. Also, he`s competing with himself. 19-year-old Justin is not as successful as 15 and 16-year-old Justin was. His movie recently bombed. And I`m sure that internally he`s struggling with that. I don`t think that this is just him screwing up.

I think that there`s a lot of pressure on a really young good, morally questionable right now, kid. But I do think deep down inside he`s good, that he just has a lot of pressure that we cannot relate to.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I will agree with you one thing. I certainly as a 19-year-old who was not yet sober, far from it, would not want to be trailed around by a bunch of people with cameras recording my every move. I`m sure they would have found a lot of embarrassing stuff that would have made me very ashamed.

Let`s go out to the phone lines. Nikki, Virginia -- Nikki Virginia -- what do you have to say about Justin Bieber tonight?

NIKKI, VIRGINIA (via telephone): Yes, good evening, Jane and all guests tonight. My comment was earlier you made a reference to Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson. My comment is that don`t think we should draw a comparison between the two because there are ideally no parallels. Because at the age of 19, Michael Jackson was not demonstrating this type of behavior that this young man -- this deviant behavior that he is demonstrating. I think he feels a sense of entitlement.

Michael Jackson was not egging homes. He was not speeding in his neighborhood. And then to take that same behavior down to Miami, there`s just no comparison. I think we just need to kind refrain from that and respect the death of Michael Jackson and the talent that he implemented.

(CROSSTALK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Nikki, I want to jump in and say you make a very, very good point. The reason that we draw the comparison was simply that Justin Bieber jumped on the roof of his SUV after getting out of court and Michael Jackson also jumped on his SUV after getting out of court. And that`s the reason that we made the comparison for the visual alone.

You know, a better comparison might be for example Britney Spears, is Justin Bieber having a Britney Spears moment. We all remember Britney stunning rise to fame and then she did have a total breakdown in front of the public.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: 45 days of entering that plea, do you understand that?

LINDSAY LOHAN, ACTRESS: Yes, your honor.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And you give that right up so that --

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Glad to see you`re feeling better.

LOHAN: Thank you.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: With due respect to the court, I want to say --

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And that, of course, is Lindsay Lohan who also has had a roller coaster ride in and out of rehab in front of the public. All young people growing up with the eyes of the world on top of them.

On the other side of the break, I`m going to talk to Dr. Drew, who is one of the premier addiction specialists in the country, indeed the world about what can we do to help Justin Bieber? What can we do to make sure this is not a downward spiral that continues but that he gets the help he needs?

Stay right there.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: That a video from the camera of -- a cell phone camera of Justin Bieber`s drag racing in his yellow Lamborghini that resulted in him being pulled over and then arrested for DUI and resisting arrest and driving with an expired license.

Now Bieber has been amping up his bad boy behavior for a while. He arrived in Miami on Monday. Reports claim he blew $75,000 in one-dollar bills at a Miami strip club just a few days ago. The club posted this video to Instagram.

We`re glad to have Dr. Drew with us. Dr. Drew, Justin Bieber is very talented. He`s also young, insanely rich, insanely famous with 49 million followers. He makes $58 million a year. Has he just developed a god complex?

DR. DREW PINSKY, HLN HOST: Well, it`s hard to know the full impact psychologically of a kid that`s been raised in this kind of environment. There`s no doubt that giving a young man that`s not fully developed, not an adult yet unlimited amounts of resources of power is not going to be a good recipe.

But my fear, Jane, is that we`re seeing something more serious going on here. This recent DUI, alcohol, weed and prescription medications in the car, I`m gravely concerned that the (inaudible) that he was using is the first in a series of observations of him using opiates. I`m interested to know what those prescription meds are. And if it`s opiates I think we`re seeing a very, very serious addictive process unfolding here.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, as you know, I`m a recovering alcoholic with 18 years of sobriety. Knock on wood, I`ll get to 19 by April. I`m a recovering alcoholic, I don`t really understand what happens when you mix pot and alcohol and prescription meds. That has to turbo charge your problems.

PINSKY: Right. It does. It turbo charges and the really most addictive substance tend to supersede the other and over. In this case the painkillers, the opiates like Vicodin, oxycontin, Percocet are the ones. And we know he`s using codeine with the syrup. That`s the one that will emerge as the drilling of choice inevitably.

The problem is opiate addiction is heroin addiction effectively. It`s the same thing and it requires long term treatment. The problem with somebody like Justin and it`s a problem I`ve encountered with so many of my working celebrity patients is they make lots of money for lots of people. They love their work and they aren`t willing to take the time away from their work to focus on their treatment which often, again in the case of opiates if that`s what we`re talking about here can easily take three to six months.

If you remember Robert Downey`s story he had to relapse and relapse, return to work, relapse until he finally took the time -- and it was years -- necessary to get a solid recovery together. And then he has a glorious career that follows.

But if you continue to keep putting the career first -- and by the way, I have also a fear that he`s going to keep the career going by getting some sort of a Conrad Murray like caretaker to kind of watch after him. And we know where those sorts of things go. Those are special treatments. Special treatments end up in disaster. He needs standard excellent treatment which means in a program.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I`ve always said there`s only two ways to go -- rehab or 12-step program that you go to everyday or every week, day in and day out. Those are the only things that work -- there`s no magic bullet. But when he`s 19 and he wants to party, how do they -- how do they get a grip on this? Do his managers do an intervention like a classic intervention?

PINSKY: I think it`s not classic intervention so much as people who have some leverage and control over him step in and say we`re canceling all the dates. We`re taking care of this. They won`t, though. It doesn`t happen like that.

And as you know, Jane, for people to want to get well, they have to hit a moment of clarity. And sometimes it`s the loss of freedom, which didn`t happen in this case -- he just got a little a slap on the wrist. Sometimes it`s for women particularly losing your children and for many people it`s nearly losing their life.

When they`re young like this and they feel entitled, they feel in control, they don`t feel like it`s out of control, they feel as though partying is just something that`s expected of someone their age, it is very difficult to engage them in treatment.

And again, on top of that, you add the money, the power, the preoccupations with work that is making money for so many people and the sycophants that surround someone like this who aren`t willing to rick their access to that individual and step up and say you need to do something.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Dr. Drew, only a couple of seconds. I`m going to be watching tonight at 9:00 Eastern -- what do you have coming up?

PINSKY: In addition, I`m taking a good look at this with the "Behavior Bureau". We have a neighbor, we have one of the neighbors from this community to talk about the egg throwing incident and a Lieutenant, one of the investigators -- detectives on the case as well.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, thank you for coming on, Dr. Drew, It`s always great to talk to you. I really admire your insight into this phenomenal problem we face in America -- drug, alcohol addiction, substance abuse. Whatever you`re using, you can get help.

We`ve got more on the other side. Still new information coming in tonight.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Chew on this -- heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women. And what you eat can dramatically change that. Former President Bill Clinton went vegan more than three years ago. He made the change after his second scare in 2010 when he underwent emergency surgery to insert a pair of stents in his arteries. He says it changed his whole metabolism and he`s back to the way he was in high school.

Studies show 82 percent of people who eat plant-based diets heal themselves. Some doctors say you can reverse heart disease by just choosing a plant-based diet.

So still not sure what to eat for a healthy heart? Here`s a few tips. Start your morning with a bowl of oatmeal. It`s rich in fiber and can help lower your bad cholesterol, also known as LDL, and keep your arteries clean. It`s loaded with omega 3 fats, great for the brain, and great for your heart.

And how did chia and flax seeds get so popular? Turns out they`re a great source of protein but you don`t have to be a vegetarian or vegan. They`ve got omega 3 fats for anyone especially if you don`t want to eat fish. Soy protein is also rich in omega 3s, and it`s a great alternative to red meat -- lower in fat, higher in fiber.

Hippocrates understood the concept more than 2,000 years ago. Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Criminal defense attorney Anna Yum, what needs to be done?

ANNA YUM, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Jane, I think really what needs to be done is that Justin Bieber does need to be treated just like anyone else in the system. So if he does get convicted in a court of law based upon the charges that he`s facing, the misdemeanor charges, then I expect that he`s going to be looking at a suspended license, possible jail time, not likely, and community service.

I think what really needs to be done is that he needs to get help. He needs to get treatment. And maybe this is the leverage that`s needed to get him into the treatment he needs.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Let`s hope. Rosie Noesi, what needs to be done?

ROSIE NOESI, RADIO PERSONALITY: Well, we all know who helped Justin Bieber get on the map, and it`s this guy over here. He listens to Usher. Usher, please. I am pleading with you. Come and take care of Justin for us.

You never got into this kind of trouble. Guide him. He needs guidance. And I think this is the only guy that he respects. Honestly.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I`ve got to tell you, Rosie, that`s a brilliant suggestion. You`re right. He got his first big break after he was discovered and then hooked up with Usher. Usher -- he needs you -- dude.
