Secret Lives: Lindsay Lohan

Aired October 16, 2014 - 19:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL, HOST (voice-over): She charmed us from the start, a Disney darling caught in a "Parent Trap."

LINDSAY LOHAN, ACTRESS: Hi. We`re like twins!

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Going freaky on Friday.

JAMIE LEE CURTIS, ACTRESS: So, you`re in my body; I`m in your body. I`m old!

LOHAN: I beg your pardon?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Getting fully loaded with "Herbie." But Lindsay Lohan made it mega as a mean girl.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You`ve never been to a real school before? Shut up!

LOHAN: I didn`t say anything.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And it`s been downhill ever since.

(on camera): Lindsay Lohan, stunning, smart, talented and troubled. At 3, when other kids were playing in a sand box, Lindsay was already a

model/actress. But like many child stars, as her fame rose, she took a dark turn. Arrests, family drama, rehab after rehab. A familiar tale in

young Hollywood, but Lindsay Lohan took it to a new extreme.

LOHAN: I did do everything that I was told to do and did the best I could to, you know, balance jobs and showing up. I`m sorry.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: 2004, Lindsay`s a teenager on the cusp of superstardom. Her hit movie "Mean Girls" has mid her the "it" girl.

ALEXIS TERESZCUK, ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR, RADAR ONLINE: Lindsay Lohan being cast in "Mean Girls" really was what set her up to be the next big thing in

Hollywood. She was a little darling. And she was different, because she had red hair and cute freckles. And she was beautiful and worked really

hard and learned her lines and really could deliver them. She was very talented. Everybody wanted Lindsay Lohan.

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): But despite her blockbuster success, Lindsay was falling apart like a slow moving car crash the whole world watched as

Lindsay Lohan went from this freckle-faced pre-teen Disney star to a certified party girl with multiple arrests and a slew of mug shots. Jailed

for her behavior, she stood before a judge some 20 times and took five separate trips to rehab.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I looked into another group called the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women. They refused to take you because they said

you`re a bad example for women who are trying to get their lives in order.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: As her legal problems stacked up with DUIs, a theft charge and probation violations, Lindsay`s standing in Hollywood spiraled

downward. To turn the tide, Lindsay went for a big rebound role as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime`s "Liz and Dick".

LOHAN: I`m so bored. I`m so bored.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But the comeback backfired. Emboldened by Lindsay`s bad behavior off-screen, critics were merciless about her onscreen acting.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hollywood always seems ready to forgive and forget if you can deliver on the goods. Some people say that they hope that Lindsay

Lohan can do something like that. But in 2012, she showed glimpses of it. She was in some movies, but notoriously,, the one where she played

Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime movie was panned all around and did not help her career.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Were her legal and lifestyle problems taking a toll on her acting skills? Did a growing number of Hollywood producers consider

Lindsay too high-risk?

TERESZCUK: Producers were afraid to work with Lindsay Lohan, because she had a really bad reputation. She was known for showing up late or, in

fact, not showing up at all. She was spotted out partying and then came up with an excuse the next day why she wasn`t at work. And it was so

unreliable that they couldn`t trust that she was going to be there for them.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Some blamed her troubles on her parents, Michael Lohan and Dina, who carried on a long-running and very public feud over their famous

daughter, with each calling the other a bad influence.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: My favorite Lindsay Lohan movie is "Parent Trap." I watched it many times with my daughter, who`s a little younger than

Lindsay. The kids, back when that movie was made, that was a big deal.

And, what`s ironic about it is it sort of -- sort of showed how she has not been able to handle the separation of her father, Michael, and Dina Lohan.

Of course, she has literally been caught in a "Parent Trap" for much of her life.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Family issues and a failing career would be enough to consume most young actresses. But was a darker secret troubling Lindsay

Lohan?

When Lindsay was arrested in 2010, a probation report revealed that, while she wasn`t allowed to drink or do drugs as part of a plea deal, she was

allowed to continue taking five prescription medications.

(on camera): So is Lindsay Lohan sober or Hollywood sober? Let`s go into our secrets lab and ask the experts.

Joining me now Dylan Howard, senior executive editor, Radar Online, and addiction specialist Jameson Monroe, founder of the Newport Academy.

Dylan, you broke the story of Lindsay Lohan`s probation report 2010 says, yes, she tested positive for amphetamines and opiates, but it was OK

because it was prescription drugs.

DYLAN HOWARD, SENIOR EXECUTIVE EDITOR, RADAR ONLINE: This was a court document that she had new life on Lindsay`s life. More than six

prescription drugs she was using at the time. One of the drugs that she was using was Dilaudid, a very powerful drug. In fact, it was found in

Michael Jackson`s system before he`s dead. This was a prescription for a disaster. But of course, Lindsay was able to get these prescriptions from

all of her doctors. She was continually saying constantly she had excuses in order to be able to get those drugs.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Excuses. Now Jameson Monroe, you deal with a lot of young people who have addiction problems. But just because something is a

prescription drug doesn`t mean it`s OK, you can`t get hooked on it.

MONROE: You`re exactly right, Jane. The No. 1 cause of death for people less than 30 years old in this country today is prescription drug

overdoses. Legal drugs like Dilaudid and Adderall.

People don`t understand that Dilaudid is really opiates. It`s heroin in a pill form. And Adderall is an amphetamine or methamphetamine in a pill

form that you get from a doctor. Just because it`s a doctor doesn`t mean it`s safe.

I want to know, more importantly, why. Why people are taking these prescription drugs. We get kids in treatment all the time that are on a

lot of prescription drugs just because they want to continue to get high legally. They don`t really have...

VELEZ-MITCHELL: It`s about honesty. You said right there, I mean, if you`re not honest how can you get sober?

MONROE: Why are you taking the drugs? To get high or to get better?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes, exactly.

(voice-over): Pills, partying and revolving rehabs. But how did Lindsay`s risky roller-coaster ride begin?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Drug addiction experts will tell you that one of the main indicators of drug addiction is genetics.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: In 2007 Lindsay Lohan seemed to be on top of the world, a bona fide star who had her pick of acting gigs. But it wasn`t long before

the veneer cracked, and Lindsay`s life began to shatter.

(voice-over): On her own initiative, Lindsay voluntarily checked herself into Wonderland Center, a posh rehab facility in Los Angeles, when she was

just 20 years old.

TERESZCUK: Lindsay Lohan was spiraling out of control. There were shots of her out until 4 a.m. in the morning. She was partying nonstop. She was

not showing up for her work commitments. And finally, she checked into rehab. This was the first time she`d gone. She was just 20 years old.

Her life was out of control, and people were very concerned for her safety.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: It seemed the starlet tried to take matters into her own hands and get help before things got worse, but rehab apparently didn`t

take.

Just three short months after checking out of Wonderland, Lohan is arrested in Beverly Hills. She`s charged with DUI, possession of cocaine, and a

misdemeanor hit-and-run after she lost control of her Mercedes-Benz and struck a curb.

Shortly after this highly-publicized crash, Lindsay checks herself into rehab No. 2, this time trying to get sober at Promises in Malibu. Would

this be it for the starlet? Could she get her life back together and her acting career back on track?

While she may have tried, critics speculated her downward spiral was only beginning, and it seemed her addictions were spinning her life out of

control.

In July 2007, just two weeks after checking out of Promises, Lindsay is busted again. This time the starlet is front and center in one of the most

bizarre Hollywood incidents to date. Like a scene from a movie, it involved Lindsay behind the wheel of a car, in a wild chase down the famous

Pacific Coast Highway. That led to this infamous 911 call.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We were just about to park our car. We were -- and out of nowhere a huge white DMZ (ph) came up and -- OK, we`re coming down

Fourth and Wilshire. We`re coming down right now. We`re being followed by a DMZ (ph). The gentleman jumped out of the car. Oh, my gosh, they`re

following us. We need help.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Lindsay`s second DUI came after a really bizarre incident when she jumped into a Denali SUV that wasn`t hers and started

chasing a Cadillac Escalade driven by the mother of her former personal assistant. That woman then called police and said somebody`s chasing me.

It was in Santa Monica.

And police came. She didn`t know why. Didn`t even know it was Lohan at the time. Didn`t know why she was being chased. But police came to the

scene. They arrested Lindsay Lohan.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: After that unforgettable chase, cops say they found cocaine in Lindsay`s pants pocket, which led to her arrest on DI charges

for alcohol, possession of cocaine, transporting a narcotic, and driving on a suspended license.

LiLo bailed out on $25,000, where she then quickly checked into Cirque Lodge Rehab Center in Utah, making this the starlet`s third trip to rehab

in 2007 alone.

As part of the deal, she pled guilty to misdemeanor cocaine use and driving under the influence and is sentenced to three years` probation.

Lindsay released a statement to MTV News, where she admitted being an addict. Lindsay admitted, "It`s clear to me that my life has become

completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs."

During this time in 2008, Lindsay is also romantically linked to Samantha Ronson, a well-known female dee jay. While Samantha, the first woman

Lindsay had ever been publicly linked with, had her act together, some questioned whether it was a mistake for the recovering starlet to date

someone with a late-night club-filled lifestyle.

DR. HOWARD SAMUELS, ADDICTION SPECIALIST: First of all, when somebody gets sober, you really have to be very careful on who you end up hanging out

with. I mean, because Ronson is a dee jay, having you know, the partner of a dee jay being in clubs is a very negative influence. You know, because

there`s lots of drugs, there`s lots of alcohol. The lifestyle, especially when you`re newly sober, is you know, the worst kind of lifestyle you can

be involved in when you get sober.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I`m telling you, what you need is follow the laws just like everybody else. Look around this room. Everyone in this room has to

follow the law: the court, the D.A., the attorney, the sheriff`s deputies, everybody. You are no different than anyone else. So please don`t push

your luck.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Fast forward to May 2010, just seven months after she was given more time to complete her alcohol classes. Lindsay was expected at a

status hearing for an update, but of course, it`s not that easy for LiLo, with an army of cameras ready to snap her arrival in court. The actress

failed to appear, and it was reportedly because she was still across the pond, complaining of a suspiciously missing passport.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Until May of 2010, Lindsay kind of had it easy with probation. But there were signs things that it was getting rough. She was

called to court by Judge Marshall Revel, the Beverly Hills courthouse, for a May 2010 hearing. She didn`t show up, because Lindsay had gone to

France, to the Cannes Film Festival. Then she says she lost her passport.

Now, there are reasons to believe that something else might have happened. But Lindsay had a bench warrant out for her. The judge didn`t like it at

all. And in fact, Judge Revel from that point on was very tough on Lindsay.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Four long days later, the actress seemed to sort out her passport issue and appears in court, sparking outrage and creating a global

debate about why she originally flaked on the first court hearing. Once there, a judge set new bail conditions.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She`s to obey all laws and orders of the court, rules and regulations of probation while on home probation. I want a

progress report and completion on that. If she is released on house arrest and electronic monitoring, she`s to follow all of the terms and conditions

that are associated with the electronic monitoring. She is on formal probation until November 11. And she still must obey all laws. She is to

continue with her community service.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: While it might seem the stern judge was once and for all laying down the law, could Lindsay`s celebrity status possibly help get her

yet another break?

Coming up more trouble for Lindsay Lohan. Her legal battles are far from over.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The shoplifting accusation against Lindsay was a real problem, because she faced not only a possible jail sentence for stealing

the necklace but also for violating her probation.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Lindsay just couldn`t seem to escape her legal problems, and probation seemed to be the harshest punishment handed down. People

started asking, "Do stars like Lindsay get special treatment?"

TERESZCUK: Lindsay Lohan can get as many chances as she wants, but the thing is, she`s getting set up to fail.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: By this point, Lindsay is 24 years old. It`s been years since she`s had a hit movie. She`s been to three different rehabs and

arrested for two DUIs. She`s become known as a chronic relapser. And even when she gets a slap on the wrist, critics complain she seems to have a

hard time following through with some very minor assignments like taking alcohol classes.

TERESZCUK: One thing that Lindsay is unable to complete are her counseling sessions. She tells the judge, actually, in court that she`s unable to pay

for them.

Finally, Lindsay gets it all taken care of. But she, again, gets in trouble because her community service, she starts out doing it at a women`s

center, and the judge says absolutely not. This isn`t going to work. In fact, they don`t even want you back, so she sends her to the morgue. She

actually finally gets her ducks in a row and completes all of her service at the morgue, but her life was still out of control.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But of course, Lindsay did manage to find time for a few red-carpet appearances. Here she is at the 2010 MTV Awards, posing in her

low-cut jump suit. It seems Hollywood was abuzz: Is LiLo back?

The whispers quickly died down in July of 2010. Just two months after the new bail conditions were set Lindsay was hauled back into court for

violating her probation and missing more of those alcohol classes. This time the judge proved she wasn`t listening to any more of Lindsay`s

excuses. It seems her star power wasn`t getting her out of this jam.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Defendant is ordered to spend 30 days in jail on the reckless driving case, 30 days in jail on the first DUI case consecutive,

and 30 days in jail on the second DUI case consecutive. That`s 90 days in jail.

LOHAN: I know that I was ordered to go once a week. And I wasn`t -- I wasn`t missing the classes. It wasn`t like that. I was working mostly. I

was working with children. It wasn`t a vacation. It wasn`t some sort of a joke. And I respect you, and I`ve been taking it seriously.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Now, remember, she`s an actress, and this tearful plea was extraordinary, but it didn`t sway the judge. And Lindsay Lohan was

sentenced to 90 days in jail.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And Ms. Lohan is here for surrender. The court has already indicated the sentence. And unless there`s anything else, I`m

going to order her be remanded at this time. So at this time she will be remanded to serve her sentence. And the court is going to order that there

be no house arrest, no electronic monitoring, no work release and no work furlough. Lohan is now remanded in custody to serve the 90-day jail

sentence.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: People were just flabbergasted when it was revealed that, while Lindsay was sobbing her eyes out, begging for mercy, she actually had

a few other choice words for the court. Check out what was painted on her fingernails.

Just a couple of weeks after that not-so-subtle manicure message, Lindsay was back in court, where she was finally handcuffed and hauled off to the

slammer to serve her 90-day sentence.

But time sped up for Lindsay. In typical Hollywood fashion, she managed to waltz out of jail after just 13 days behind bars. Nowhere near her

original 90-day sentence. From there she was immediately taken to court- ordered rehab at the UCLA Medical Center, making it her fourth trip to rehab at just 24 years old.

Does Lindsay Lohan deserve an Academy Award for her gripping performance in the courtroom? What do you think, Dylan?

HOWARD: Well, let`s face it. Judge Marsha Revel is the one who was faced with Lindsay Lohan`s middle finger, which said "F.U." during a court case.

Lindsay Lohan showed contempt for the allied (ph) superior court.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: People are just taken in by her glamour, her charisma, her celebrity, her wealth. She`s got it all, and people crumble, Jameson.

MONROE: Look, all she has to do is show up on a couple days a month and put on an Oscar-winning performance. Look, I was on probation for a number

of years in my teens, and all I had to do was show up on my probation officer and have my ducks in a row, and then I got out. Got to go do

whatever I wanted to.

So she`s putting on definitely an Oscar-awarding performance. And she`s deceiving everybody involved.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And you speak as a recovering addict.

MONROE: A recovering addict myself.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I see it as a recovering alcoholic. I know when you`re desperate for your drug of choice you will do whatever it takes, and that

makes you a very good actress.

(voice-over): At this point Lindsay was becoming known more about her legal appearances than anything else. There was more buzz about her court

appearances than her movie roles. And a lot of people wonder if Lindsay had truly overcome her addictions.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Are you sober?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Could she finally come to grips with her issues while completing rehab? From the comforts of home?

SAMUELS: I work with a lot of people that are very arrogant, entitled and grandiose. Now, those characteristics are the characteristics of addiction

and alcoholism. She fits those characteristics.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: While Lindsay was trying to clean up her personal life and all her legal problems, she all but disappeared from Hollywood altogether.

Whether that was her choice or Hollywood`s, well, that`s another story.

TERESZCUK: Lilo has always wanted to be considered a movie star. She`s done a lot of movies. Some of her movies were going straight to DVD and

they just weren`t doing that well. In fact at one point her lawyer even said unfortunately my client can only get jobs outside of the United

States. She was not having very much luck getting jobs.

ALAN DUKE, CNN ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER: After all of the visits to rehab and short visits to jail Lindsay was almost unemployable. First of all,

how could she work because she had all the probation requirements? She really couldn`t travel, couldn`t leave the states. And she`d already

gotten in trouble for going to France and not coming back for a hearing.

So directors and producers -- I had one who asked me "Is she insurable? I would like to consider her for a project." But the job offers were very

sparse.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: In August of 2010 a new judge determined Lindsay could finish her latest rehab attempt in her own home. A lot of people wondered,

"Was this Lindsay`s chance to get back on the right path?" She was given the opportunity to get clean, sober and truly start over. But can you do

that from your own home?

Well, unfortunately, it didn`t last long. Like a lot of people suffering from addiction the up and down saga of Lindsay`s life was far from over.

Just one month after Lindsay`s lawyer declared the actress had learned her lesson Lindsay herself tweets that she failed a drug test.

Lindsay tweeted, "Regrettably I did in fact fail my latest drug test." She went on to thank her fans, family and friends for understanding that she

was trying but also that she is a work in progress just like anyone else.

Her probation report later revealed the failed drug test involved cocaine and unauthorized amphetamines. As a result in September 2010 Lindsay had

her probation revoked. The starlet was again handcuffed and taken to jail for her quickest stint yet.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: Lindsay was briefly taken to jail in September of 2010 but very briefly. It seemed that Judge Eldon Fox finally got fed up with the

actress and sent her to jail. But it was only a few hours later that Shawn Holly her lawyer was able to get another judge in Los Angeles to overturn

that and grant her bail, $300,000 bond but she was free again.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: After her release in what became a typical move for the former Disney star Lindsay quickly checks herself into this time the Betty

Ford rehab facility in California for substance abuse. This marked her fifth attempt to get help for her addictions.

A lot of people started to wonder after five stays and five different rehabs was Lindsay really addressing her underlying problems.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

HOWARD SAMUELS, ADDICTION SPECIALIST: I work with a lot of people, a lot of young people who unfortunately have gone to four, five, ten rehabs. And

every rehab you go to it helps you reduce your resistance to recovery.

Now, I didn`t get sober until I was 32. And I am 28 years clean and sober now. I spent three years of my life locked up in treatment centers.

So for hard core cases like myself or Lindsay, ok, sometimes it takes a lot of treatment, it takes hitting a lot of particular bottoms before you get

it.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Let`s get back into the Secrets Lab. Does Lindsay Lohan have an addict`s attitude? Dylan Howard from RadarOnline and addiction

specialist Jamison Monroe -- I want to start with you Jamison. It is like the addict mentality. "I am special. I`m terminally unique. The rules

just don`t apply to me."

JAMISON MONROE, ADDICTION SPECIALIST: Exactly Jane. You and I both know this first hand. When you are in the grips of addiction nothing else

matters but getting high -- legal consequences, movie deals, it doesn`t matter. Payment -- it doesn`t matter. What Lindsay needs to do is she

needs to have a little humility. What all addicts need to do in order to get sober is have a little humility. Realize that they aren`t above the

law, above the rules and realize that they need to come down to earth in order to get sober.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But Dylan, Hollywood feeds into her attitude that she is special.

DYLAN HOWARD: She doesn`t have an ounce of humility. She doesn`t have an ounce of humility whatsoever. She thinks that she`s a law unto herself.

This is a woman who was in court and decided to go to the Cannes Film Festival to promote a movie instead of going to face a judge in a court

case many years ago. She had seven times during 27 court-mandated alcohol classes she didn`t even turn up. She doesn`t care. She has her own law.

It is Lindsay`s law. It`s Lindsay`s world and we just live in it.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But she gets away with it. Everybody co-signs her bad behavior. It`s like we all are co-dependent on Lindsay Lohan. When are we

going to stand up to her? Would another person, maybe an inner city kid who was poor be treated the same way, be allowed to get away with this? I

doubt it.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Because of the failed drug test Lindsay is ordered to stay at Betty Ford until January 3, 2011 as a punishment for violating her

probation.

Coming up, just when it seems Lindsay is in the clear new and very serious accusations of stealing arise.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: The shoplifting accusation against Lindsay was a real problem because she faced not only a possible jail sentence for stealing the

necklace but also for violating her probation.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: 2011, it`s a new year and it`s already riddled with problems for the starlet. Late in January 2011 a jewelry shop owner

accuses Lindsay of walking out of her store with a one of a kind $2,500 necklace right around her neck. The necklace is later returned by somebody

in Lindsay`s camp but the damage is done as the story spreads like wildfire.

Lindsay is charged with felony grand theft. One month later in February, 2011; she is booked and released on $45,000 bail later that day.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You`re charged with count one on grand theft of personal property in violation of penal code section 47-A, it`s a felony.

Property in this case alleged to have a value of $2,500, to wit a necklace. Do you understand the nature of the charges in count one.

SHAWN HOLLY, ATTORNEY: She does, you honor. We waive formal reading of the complaint, statement of right to enter a plea of not guilty.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: This charge triggers a probation violation in that old 2007 case of misdemeanor cocaine use and DUI.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So what I`m telling you is you need to follow the laws just like everybody else. You are no different than anyone else so please

don`t push your luck.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: The shop lifting accusation against Lindsay was a real problem because she faced not only a possible jail sentence for stealing the

necklace but also for violating her probation.

TERESZCUK: She was offered a plea bargain but it included jail time which Lindsay didn`t want to do.

DUKE: There was a lot of behind the scenes drama with Lindsay Lohan trying to decide if she would take that plea deal and admit that she stole the

necklace and violated her probation and then face the judge which could have been rehab or jail time and of course, strict probation. But she

didn`t want to do it. There were people close to her who were not aligned with her lawyer who were telling her don`t listen to Shawn Holly. Don`t

take that deal. That was a strong influence on her.

Eventually she did go to a trial and she was found guilty of violating and stealing the necklace. But she caught a break there because the judge then

said it was a misdemeanor and not a felony because it turned out the necklace really wasn`t worth as much as prosecutors had alleged making it

not a felony.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Lindsay reports to jail three weeks early in May of 2011 to begin serving her sentence for the misdemeanor theft and probation

violation. But Lindsay is soon released with an ankle monitor to serve the remainder of her time under house arrest.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: She was allowed to be under home arrest. This was probably not a good idea for the hard-partying starlet. She moved down to Venice Beach

in California. There`s a gorgeous very modern three-story house with a roof top that she started partying on because she wasn`t allowed to leave

to go to parties but all of her friends could come there.

There were photographs that surfaced showing that Lindsay was -- there were vodka bottles in the house, lots of booze and Lindsay was still partying.

And the judge called her back into court and said "All right. You cannot do this anymore. You cannot be having these parties. You have to be

serious and take this very seriously."

SAMUELS: Lindsay should be spending a year or two in treatment. I spent two years in treatment myself. Because the longer you spend in treatment,

the better shot there is for you to change your mental state. For you to sort of surrender and work on your character defects and really sort of

take in what recovery truly means.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Coming up troubled star pushed to the edge. Can Lindsay ever regain her status as one of Hollywood`s most beautiful leading ladies?

Is her fame and fortune being hindered by her inability to stay clean?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: Lindsay seemed to have a habit of not doing all the stuff she was supposed to do under probation. And believe me, by the summer of 2011, it

was a long list.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tearful remorse, obscene defiance, rock star partying, apologies, rehabs and lots and lots and lots of relapses. Lindsay Lohan

seems like she is playing two different roles at the same time. There is the Lindsay in court crying, sobbing in front of the judges, begging for

forgiveness. And then there is the Lindsay Lohan who is spotted out at the night clubs dancing, allegedly drinking into the early morning hours.

So who is the real Lindsay?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SAMULES: Lindsay Lohan is an addict alcoholic. That is all she is -- ok. And the only reason we are talking about her is because she has had some

fame. And she is the addict alcoholic that the whole world is watching.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But what exactly sent Lindsay on her toxic and troubled path? For many the answer to that secret may lie with mom and dad.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: Lindsay Lohan`s parents probably have the most bitter divorce in all of Hollywood and she has been caught in the middle of it from day

one. Her parents Michael and Dina Lohan fought for years. Dina accused Michael of cheating. She says that he beat her up, that he was a drunk,

that he did drugs. Michael actually spent years in jail and after he got out Dina divorced him.

They have four children together but their fights have been epic. The two of them are constantly accusing each other of being bad parents and saying

that the one doesn`t care about the other and is only doing things for publicity and that neither of them have the best interests of Lindsay at

heart.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: Michael Lohan is a character. There is no question that Michael and Dina love their children. I have seen it first-hand. They may be

dysfunctional in how they show that love and it goes back way back to when they were married and then they`re divorced. You can look at that and say

that that is a big part of Lindsay`s problem.

Drug addiction experts will tell you that one of the main indicators of drug addiction is genetics and Michael Lohan has been into rehab. Michael

Lohan has been prison -- not for drugs but for an inside trader situation when he was working on Wall Street.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Michael Lohan says he has been on the wagon for a long time; that he wants to be a positive influence on his troubled daughter but

that hasn`t seemed to ease much of the friction between him and Lindsay.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: People really get confused about that, a father and a daughter who say public things that make the other mad. They talk about each other to

the media. They tweet about each other. But my first-hand view of it and I have talked to Lindsay about it and I`ve talked to Michael Lohan about it

many, many times, is I am convinced that they care about each other and I know that they communicate with each other.

It`s just a very complicated father and daughter relationship. And you throw into that the situation with Dina Lohan and the divorce with

Lindsay`s father it is not a very simple thing. It`s like a parent trap, very much like something in a movie that Lindsay Lohan might have starred

in.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Despite her demons, her problems getting roles, Lindsay Lohan has at least two angels trying to look after her and her career.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: While Lindsay Lohan had trouble booking movie roles, two people really took care of her.

Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels really loved Lindsay and really wanted her to succeed so they would often invite her back to host "Saturday Night Live".

I think they were very concerned for her and saw the good person that she was inside and who was just unfortunately had a lot of addictions. So they

always tried to give her jobs and they let her host the show and try to get her career jumpstarted again.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Coming up, can Lindsay really jumpstart her career again?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: Hollywood is so forgiving of Lindsay Lohan. They absolutely want to put the past behind them and let Lindsay Lohan shine.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: There`s no doubt, Lindsay suffered her fair share of problems.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Lindsay, we love you.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I looked into another group called the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women. They refused to take you because they said

you`re a bad example for the women who are trying to get their lives in order.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You`re no different than anyone else. Don`t push your luck.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I am revoking her probation.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But in early 2012, she seemed on the upswing again, glowing probation reports, new work opportunities flooding in.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: Lindsay really staged a comeback in 2012. She had Hugh Hefner put her on the cover of the magazine. She did an iconic Marilyn Monroe

pose, beautiful, totally nude pictorial inside the magazine. She was paid almost $1 million for that. This was great for her. She was then cast in

the Elizabeth Taylor biopic, "Liz and Dick".

LINDSAY LOHAN, ACTRESS: I`m bored. So bored.

When you wrote this, were you thinking of Antony and Cleopatra, or me and Richard?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Antony and Cleopatra, of course.

LOHAN: Of course.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: It looked like Lindsay was back and better than ever. But of course, it couldn`t be that easy for the troubled starlet.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: She was reportedly a disaster onset. And, in fact, the trailer that was used by Elizabeth Taylor many, many decades ago was used. The

woman who bought it at an auction lent it to this production and let them use it and she then claimed that Lindsay and her friends trashed it, put

cigarette burns in the furniture and destroyed her very beautiful Elizabeth Taylor antique.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Action.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Lindsay`s legal troubles off the set continued, too.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: Lindsay Lohan was arrested in New York City in 2012 for getting in a fight in a bar. This was a big problem for her because it violated

her probation in California that she was still on from the necklace theft. The probation was revoked and she was in a whole other world of trouble.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: For this latest violation, Lindsay was ordered back into rehab, again but this time, with tough new restrictions on her prescribed

medications.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUKE: With this latest visit to rehab, the judge ordered that it be a lockdown facility -- serious drug rehab facility. Not one of these resort

places. And she ended up at Betty Ford, where she`d been before. And she knew the rules there were something she really didn`t like. She wanted to

continue taking the Adderall that she`d been prescribed as a teen for her attention deficit disorder when that was diagnosed. Betty Ford just a 30-

day program, she then moved to another one Cliffside of Malibu -- a pretty serious rehab clinic there itself.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But there may be another reason, a darker secret reason Lindsay fought so very hard to find a rehab that would allow her to keep

taking her so-called precious Adderall.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SAMUELS: Well, if you had to take a look at Adderall, I have that same issue with a lot of young women that come into my treatment center. The

issue is, Adderall because it`s speed, what it does is it helps the women not gain weight. Big issue with lots of women is about the weight issue.

And Adderall is a drug that helps them stay off of eating a lot of food, keeps them in shape. You know, so they a lot of doctors will misprescribe

it because the addict will go in and manipulate the doctor to get Adderall for their ADHD.

Now, in this case, like in a lot of cases, very typical behavior about the addict who`s a woman desperately needs her Adderall. But for the wrong

reason, it`s usually for weight control and that`s it.

TERESZCUK: Lindsay was furious. She fought so hard to make sure she could find a rehab center that allowed her to take Adderall. Finally she went

into the Betty Ford and she put up a fight. It was a quite a few weeks before they were finally able to talk her into not taking the medicine

anymore.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Lilo herself finally admitted that alcohol and Adderall were her addictions. Fresh from her sixth trip to rehab, Lindsay sat down

for a one-on-one with Oprah.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OPRAH WINFREY, TALK SHOW HOST: What`s going to be different this time?

LOHAN: I`m not taking Adderall. That`s a big deal.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Whatever Lindsay`s toxic past, everyone especially in Hollywood loves a good comeback story.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TERESZCUK: Hollywood is so forgiving of Lindsay Lohan. They absolutely want to put the past behind them and let Lindsay Lohan shine. Robert

Downey Jr. came back from such a troubled past and everyone in Hollywood really believes that Lindsay with the right director, the right role, the

right people around her can make a comeback. So they`ve been very forgiving of her.

SAMUELS: And I really hope that she can be an example to other people out there about how to turn your life around and how to be a positive example.

And I hope people see what she`s done and say, "You know what, I don`t want that to be my life."

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: So at this juncture, we wonder, will we ever see Lindsay Lohan back at her prime? On top of her game? Where there`s more news

about her skills in front of the camera than what she does when they turn the lights off? We hope so. We`re rooting for you, Lindsay.

Thanks for watching, I`m Jane Velez-Mitchell.
