JOHN BERMAN, CNN ANCHOR: Dispatchers lost contact. Backup officers found Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz dead, stripped of his gun and other gear. He leaves behind a community in mourning. This is Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAYOR DONNY SCHMIT, FOX LAKE, ILLINOIS: Lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was a 30-year veteran, and a decorated police officer and family man and a dear friend for the entire village of Fox Lake. Not only did Fox Lake lose a family member, I lost a very dear friend.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BERMAN: They called him G.I. Joe and apparently beloved by so many there. CNN's Ryan Young is in Fox Lake with the very latest on this search.

RYAN YOUNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT: This manhunt has been going on for more than 12 hours. You can see behind me, the command center police have been using for several hours as they look for these suspects. We are about a mile and a half from where the officer was shot.

Officer Joseph Gliniewicz, a father of four, was shot and killed, a 32-year veteran of the police force here. Officers had been manning this area before spreading out to find the three suspects, we are told, two white males and one black male is the only description they have been giving so far of the men they have been looking for.

This has been an exhaustive search where we have seen the ATF and FBI bringing their SWAT teams into the area to look for these suspects. This 32-year vet of the police department was trying to answer a suspicious person's call when he encountered these three people.

Shots were fired. He was killed in the line of duty. Since then, people from this community have been coming out and very upset about what happened and, in fact, lining the streets here with signs and having people with their support for the officers who are involved in this.

Imagine, the hundreds of officers are now in this area looking for three suspects who have been involved in a murder of one of their own and something we continue to follow. As we get more information, of course, we will bring it to you.

BERMAN: All right, Ryan, thank you so much. That was Ryan Young reporting from Fox Lake, Illinois. At least seven school districts in the area have cancelled classes today because of this manhunt.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN ANCHOR: New escalation this morning in the feud between Donald Trump and Jeb Bush. Each of the Republican candidates launching a new social media attack aimed at the other.

A new Bush web video refers to Trump as a late convert to conservatism and a true liberal and Trump responds in kind, slamming Jeb Bush as a dynasty candidate.

CNN political reporter, Sara Murray has the latest from Washington.

SARA MURRAY, CNN POLITICAL REPORTER: Good morning, Christine and John. The attacks are really heating up now between Donald Trump and Jeb Bush. Jeb Bush really kicking it off yesterday when he released a video using Donald Trump's own words to paint the frontrunner as a liberal.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WOLF BLITZER, CNN HOST, "THE SITUATION ROOM": Do you like representing the United States in a deal with Iran, with this regime?

DONALD TRUMP (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I think Hillary would do a good job. Hillary Clinton, I think, is a terrific woman. I'm a little biased because I've known her for years. I know her very well. She is very talented.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MURRAY: Now Trump didn't just sit there and take that. He fired back on Twitter and in his own Instagram video.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JEB BUSH (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: We recognize the commitment of someone who has devoted her life to public service. I want to say thank you to both Secretary Clinton and to President Clinton.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MURRAY: Trump even did an interview with CNN where he explained that he used to be a Democrat.

TRUMP: You know, one other thing I'll say because he mentions the fact that I was, at one point, a Democrat. Well, in New York City, everybody was a Democrat practically.

If you run for city council, if you run for political office, whoever wins the Democrat primary is automatically, that is, you know, there was almost no election because the Republicans hardly exist in New York City. Me, more than anybody else, I'll cross -- I'll go across lines. I think I'll have a lot of Democrats. You know Reagan had Democrats for Reagan. It was a very big group of people and a very big block. I think I will have a lot of Democrats voting for me, far more than any Republican for the last long period of time.

I will say this and I will say this, you know, very strongly. The Republican conservatives were not energized in the last election. Had they been energized and had they voted, you would have seen victory for Mitt Romney.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MURRAY: The big question now is where do these attacks go next? Right now, we are seeing sort of an exchange on social media, on Twitter and YouTube and Instagram. Not a lot of money behind these ads.

The big question is whether we will see Jeb Bush's super PAC which has a hundred million dollars weigh in on this fight and start actually running ads against Donald Trump. For now, the answer to that looks like it's no, but stay tuned. Back to you, John and Christine.

BERMAN: All right, Sara. More big political news this morning, a change in debate rules that will almost certainly benefit Carly Fiorina and that debate is coming up September 16th and where? Right here on CNN.

CNN announced that any candidate who polls in the top ten between the first debate, which was on August 6th and September 10th, they will be on the big stage.

[05:35:00] The reason for the change according to the CNN statement, an unusual shortage of polls, no real national polls, not nearly as many as expected after the first debate.

Carly Fiorina, who surged in a handful of polls that have been done after the so-called happy hour debate, she will almost definitely now be on the main stage. She praised the decision when she heard about it while she was on Meghan McCain's radio show.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CARLY FIORINA (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: They have said that the cause was a lack of national public data with Fox following the August 6th debate. That is the truth. You know, there were so many polls prior to August 6th and there have been very few since August 6th.

If you just average polls, you come up with an answer that doesn't reflect current reality. You know what? Good for CNN and I am so appreciative for all of the support and the pressure that our grassroots supporters put on CNN because I'm quite sure it made a difference.

(END VIDEO CLIP) BERMAN: This adds to the intrigue and the excitement leading up to this debate. It is September 16th right here on CNN, airing at 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

ROMANS: All right, the president, President Obama, preparing for his final day in Alaska. He visits with fishermen this afternoon and then he takes it a cultural performance at a local middle school before heading back to Washington.

But it was a boat trip he took yesterday that had him sounding the alarm about global warming and a boat trip that brought him face-to- face with a rapidly melting glacier.

Let's get more now from CNN's chief White House correspondent, Jim Acosta in Anchorage.

JIM ACOSTA, CNN SENIOR WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: John and Christine, we witnessed what will likely go down as one of the lasting images of the Obama presidency. The president was out on a boat tour of Seward Bay here in Alaska, taking a look at the glaciers that are melting rapidly in this state.

We also saw some of the stunning wildlife that inhabits this majestic corner of the world. Mr. Obama spoke again on the issue of global warming, urging countries across the globe to change course before it's too late. Here is more of what the president had to say.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: This is one of the most studied glaciers because it's so easily accessible. But what it indicates, because of the changing patterns of winters, with less snow, longer, hotter summers, is how rapidly the glacier is receding.

You know, it sends a message about the urgency that we are going to need to have when it comes to dealing with this because, obviously, when the glaciers erode, that is also a sign of the amount of water that is being introduced into the oceans, rising sea levels, and the warming generally is having an impact on this national park.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ACOSTA: It is called an exited glacier for a reason. It has melted a thousand feet the last ten years. He also taped that special with survival Bear Grylls and no word whether they got up and close and personal with any wildlife.

Later on today, the president heads to the arctic for another prospective on global warming. He will hear from fishermen who were seeing their livelihoods threatened and he will also talk to nearby communities who are relocating because of the rapid melting in the arctic -- John and Christine.

ROMANS: All right, Jim, thanks for that. Time for an EARLY START on your money now, Asian stocks closed lower after another wild swing in China stocks. The Shanghai Composite plunged more than 4 percent and recovered with a small loss.

European stocks have been opened about two and a half hours now there. They are lower too. U.S. stock futures are bouncing. Here is the damage report from yesterday. The Dow plunged 470 points and now down 12.5 percent from its high.

The S&P 500 fell 3 percent, back in correction territory, ominous start to September which is historically the worse month for stocks.

The problem fresh worries about China and China's economy and how quickly its growth is tapering off and tumbling oil prices and fell 7 percent yesterday and moving lower again right now

And big oil cutting jobs, Conoco-Phillips announced plans to cut 1,800 jobs, 10 percent of its work force mostly in North America and more than 500 job cuts in Houston alone. American companies have cut more than 50,000 jobs because of those tumbling oil prices.

BERMAN: It's good for consumers and good for drivers, but we have such a big shift on something that important to the economy, it does have an impact.

ROMANS: That's right.

BERMAN: Baltimore bracing for protests today, as a judge hears the case of six police officers accused in Freddie Gray's death. We have the details next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

[05:43:11]

ROMANS: The city of Baltimore is on edge this morning. Police bracing for potential unrest as the Freddie Gray case enters the pretrial stage. Six Baltimore officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray who suffered fatal injuries while in police custody. Several key issues are expected to be raised at today's court proceedings. Let's get more now from CNN's Jean Casarez.

JEAN CASAREZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: John and Christine, today's pretrial hearing is extremely important for these six police officer defendants. They are asking, first of all, for the judge to dismiss all of the charges. They are also asking that the state attorney's office be recused, and a special prosecutor be brought in.

And they are also asking for defendants to be severed or be tried together, another big issue today. Now because of that, the Baltimore Police Department wants to be sure that they have their staffing, so they have told the officers they cannot take leave today.

So all officers have to be in place within the department, they cannot be off at all. And we have spoken to some businesses in the area that have alerted their employees to be on the lookout for traffic disruptions because community activists are actively asking for demonstrations with of all of this because of the importance of this hearing.

So we really don't know what is going to happen as the day goes on today. We believe, though, there will be some protests and there will some demonstrations. One of the big issues here, the defense is asking that the judge dismiss all of the charges, based on timing.

They say that when the police department finished their investigation on May 1st, that they took it to the commissioner of courts with their statement asking for conceivably charges, 13 minutes later was the first arrest.

So they say that the prosecutor's office just was too quick on all of this and, therefore, the charges should be dismissed.

[05:45:04] They say that the state attorney has so many conflicts of interest in this case that the entire state attorney's office should be recused. Special prosecutor brought in and, lastly, the question of whether six defendants should be tried together or separately.

Those arguments may take the longest of all today and we don't know if the judge is going to rule from the bench or if the judge will take this under advisement and those rulings will come at a later date.

But all critical issues and, John and Christine, next week, change of venue will be on the table. Another pretrial hearing, another critical issue. Back to you.

ROMANS: All right, Jean Casarez will be covering that for us. Thank you for that, Jean, this morning. Let's take a look at what is coming up on "NEW DAY." Michaela Pereira joins me now.

MICHAELA PEREIRA, CNN ANCHOR: Cops are feeling the heat across the nation. As you've been reporting this morning, the manhunt ramped up this morning near Chicago for three suspects after an officer was shot and killed.

Police are also now trying to explain a video that appears to show a Texas man being shot. An eyewitness says at least one of his hands was up. We will have the latest on both cases and we are actually going to speak to the young man who recorded the video of the incident that happened near San Antonio.

Also, Donald Trump, the Democrat? Not as crazy as you might think. He is defending his more liberal past and you'll hear what he told CNN last night. We will ask retired general and former presidential candidate, Wesley Clark, his thoughts on the 2016 race. We've got a lot to get to.

ROMANS: Indeed, you do. All right, we will be watching. Thanks, Michaela.

The migrant crisis exploding in Europe and thousands trying to escape war-torn countries and stranded and right now, they have no place to go. We are live next. (COMMERCIAL BREAK)

[05:50:31]

ROMANS: Now to the migrant crisis in Europe spiraling out of control. Chaos erupts in Hungary where police have been forced to clear hundreds of men, women and children from Budapest main train stations and never ending wave of migrants most of them from Iraq and Syria and families trying to reach Germany any way they can.

Let's go live to Budapest and bring in CNN's senior international correspondent, Arwa Damon. Arwa, the people behind you have come so far and faced so much danger to get to Europe where they are hoping to get to Germany.

The German Chancellor Angel Merkel has said come to Germany, we want to help you, but they are having a lot of trouble in Hungary. What is happening?

ARWA DAMON, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: And the perhaps worst part in all of this is they are fully aware that Germany is welcoming. At the Munich Train Station, they have more aid for the migrants and refuges and they know what to do with.

And yet they are continuing to live in the streets in Hungary at the train station in Budapest and waiting for the Hungarian authorities for maybe the German or Austrian authorities to come here and do something to open up the route onwards for them.

The trains were briefly departing on Monday and gave everyone a lot of optimism and hope that finally this existence that they have here was going to be over, but that route was shut down.

There have been ongoing demonstration and large crowds gathered in front of the main entrance and it being blocked by police and throughout, people sleeping on the floor on cardboard pizza boxes, on very thin blankets, entire families.

You speak to the parents, the mothers, they will tell you the hardest thing they have had to go through having thought that they were saving their children from the wars in Iraq and Syria, because most of these people are refuges from there.

Having put them through the extreme dangers of the entire journey here from the boat rides to the trek lasting for hours throughout the different countries, to the beating son and lack of food and water along the way, they hardly expected to then end up living for days, if not upwards of a week in the streets of Hungary.

The country that was meant to be the gateway to the European Union and the gateway to this dream that they had of a new, safe, and dignified life they were able to start. People are so upset. They don't know what to do and they don't know who to turn to and they don't know how much longer they can hold on like this.

ROMANS: All right, Arwa Damon for us in Budapest, thank you for that. It's 53 minutes past the hour, the Dow plunging nearly 500 points, any signs of recovery today? We will tell you next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

[05:57:13]

ROMANS: All right, good morning. Welcome back. I'm Christine Romans. Let's get an EARLY START on your money this morning. Stocks looking for a comeback after yesterday's ugly dive. Asian stocks closed lower. Another big swing for China stocks.

European stocks are flat. U.S. stock futures are looking a little more upbeat. Yesterday, the Dow plunged 470 points. Now down 12.5 percent from its high. Fresh worries about China's economy plus tumbling oil prices. Prices fell 7 percent yesterday. Oil moving lower again right now.

McDonald's breakfast lovers rejoice! Soon you'll able to get the egg McMuffin any time of the day. McDonald's is experimenting with all- day breakfast in a few markets and apparently it was successful because starting October 6th it will be available nationwide.

Part of the fast food giant to turnaround slumping sails. The company says all-day breakfast is what everyone requested from customers.

ALISYN CAMEROTA, CNN ANCHOR: Good morning, everyone. Welcome to your NEW DAY. It is Wednesday, September 2nd, 6:00 in the east. Chris is off this morning.

We begin with police departments across the country on edge. In Illinois, a massive manhunt under way for three suspects wanted in connection with a murder of a veteran officer. Schools closed in the area as that search widens.

PEREIRA: Also developing this morning, police in San Antonio facing threats after video surfaces of two officers fatally shooting a man who appears to have his hands up. Baltimore bracing for unrest as six officers are charged in the death of Freddie Gray.

We are covering all of these developments the way only CNN can. We start with Rosa Flores. She is live in Fox Lake, Illinois where the three cop killers remain on the loose -- Rosa.

ROSA FLORES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Michaela. You are right. Cop killers on the loose and a community on edge. The latest on this investigation is that it has all been turned over to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
