Police Surround Alleged Bank Robber in Tampa

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Hello, I'm Lou Waters at the CNN Center.

We have a tense situation involving Tampa police in Florida at the Crossings Apartments. Inside, an alleged bank robber holding a hostage, it is assumed.

This is a very fresh story. But it began about an hour ago with the robbing of a Bank of America branch just blocks away from this apartment complex. It's now surrounded.

In the ensuing police chase involving a female officer, the suspect fired on the officer and apparently, according to the police chief just moments ago, killed her. Another officer was wounded. The man, now, is inside. We're told he is holding a hostage. The Crossings Apartments are surrounded.
