New Yorkers React as Gary Condit Breaks Silence

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, Gary Condit writes in his letter to constituents that he had nothing to do with Chandra Levy's disappearance.
Barb there, in that e-mail, asking if he ever tried to contact her after the last time Chandra Levy was seen.
Well, Jason Carroll is standing at the crossroads to the world, Times Square in New York,...
JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes.
LIN: ... and you've been hearing what people might want to be asking Gary Condit tonight should they be sitting in the seat across from him in prime-time television. What are they saying?
CARROLL: Well, it's definitely a lot of water cooler talk. When we decided that we were going to try and find out what people were saying about Gary Condit's interview, we came to one of the busiest places on Earth, as you say, right in Times Square. We decided we would stop people on their way to work, get their opinion about what they think of the Gary Condit interview that is about to take place.
I found three people who decided to stop and talk to us. They're looking at the paper here. You can see we've got Ray, we've got Heather and we have Kenny.
Let's start with Ray. Ray, give me your opinion, if you were conducting the interview tonight, what would you ask Gary Condit?
RAY: Absolutely want to know what his relationship was with Chandra Levy because if he doesn't come clean about that, then I don't really think anything else that he says is going to have any meaning.
CARROLL: Now you said you would not be watching tonight, why?
RAY: Because I get the feeling he's not going to come clean,...
CARROLL: OK.
RAY: ... and that he's just going to give us the same garbage that we've been getting all along about this.
CARROLL: All right, I'm going to move on to Heather here. Good morning to you, Heather.
HEATHER: Morning.
CARROLL: What would you like to hear Gary Condit say this evening?
HEATHER: I'd like to say that he knows where she is. I mean I think it's -- this is a really sad situation because he's been going around in circles since this whole thing started and we don't seem to be getting anywhere with the case. And unfortunately, as good as Connie Chung is, I don't think it's really going to make any difference tonight. I don't think there's going to be anything that comes out tonight that hasn't already been said.
CARROLL: Kenny, let's move on to you, will you watch this evening?
KENNY: Yes.
CARROLL: What would you like to hear?
KENNY: I would like to hear that where is my -- where is my daughter? If it was my daughter, where is -- where is she at? Why did you make her disappear? I know you had something to do with it, bottom line. And they should go after him the right way. They did everything backwards. They let him get away with murder, bottom line. Not -- you really can't even say murder, but...
CARROLL: No, you can't. It's just...
KENNY: You really -- you really can't say that. I'll take that back, but you made her disappear. You've got to believe that.
CARROLL: Do the three of you believe that Gary Condit had something to do with the disappearance of...
HEATHER: Yes,...
RAY: Yes, in some way, shape or form.
HEATHER: ... absolutely.
RAY: If he didn't have anything to do with it directly, then I think he has an idea of what went on. Somebody should talk to his brother.
CARROLL: All right. All right, thank you to the three of us. Have a good day at work.
Again we want to stress...
HEATHER: Thank you
CARROLL: Thank you. ... that these are just opinions. Again, we're going to be talking to people all morning long, Carol and Colleen, trying to find out what they think about the Gary Condit interview, get their opinions about what they think will happen tonight.
