Jewish Defense League Chairman Arrested

JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: A breaking story we want to report to you out of Los Angeles, and that is that two leaders of the Jewish Defense League were arrested by federal authorities this day, Wednesday, in an aborted plot to blow up an unidentified Los Angeles institution.

Now, this information is coming from a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles. The men, whose names are Irv Rubin and Earl Krugel, were taken into federal custody today following early morning raids by members of an antiterrorism task force. Now on the Web site of the Jewish Defense League, it describes itself as a militant group based in Los Angeles that advocates the use of all necessary means, even strength, force and violence, to defend the interests of Jews as well as the return of all Jews to Israel. Again, this according to the Web site. And Irv Rubin, one of those two men taken into custody, is identified as the group's chairman. Again, two leaders of the Jewish Defense League arrested by authorities today and charged in an aborted plot to blow up a Los Angeles institution.
