KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We are continuing to follow that breaking news story out of southern California this morning. Once again, bringing you live pictures of this mile-long freight train that struck a commuter train head on this morning during rush hour, killing one person, we are told now, and injuring 265 other people.
The northbound freight train hit the southbound Metrolink train about 8:10 California time. And that's in this area of Placentia. It's just south of Los Angeles. And we are told that buckling and derailing of the two cars packed with passengers caused all these injuries. Orange County Coroner's Office reported the one fatality. We were able to confirm that just within the last 20 minutes or so. And the officials continue to stick by the 265 people that were injured, many of those seriously.
And the new information: Up to 75 passengers are now being sent to trauma centers, and the rest of the injured are being treated at the scene. The Orange County Fire Department continues to go through this Metrolink train area car by car, treating the injured, looking for the more serious injured, trying to make sure that they are treating everybody.
Once again, we will continue to monitor this, the freight train hitting a passenger train in southern California. Once again, one person reported dead, 265 people injured.
