Former Sheriff Found Guilty on 12 Counts

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We have to head to Albany, Georgia. You see here, this is the superior courtroom of Judge Cynthia Becker. It is a story we have been following for almost two years now, and that is the murder and racketeering trial of former DeKalb County Sheriff Sidney Dorsey. We understand now, we are about to hear the verdict on all 15 counts of murder and corruption. Here we go.

CYNTHIA BECKER, SUPREME COURT JUDGE: Has been it been dated and sign by you as the foreperson?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, your honor.
BECKER: All right. If you will hand that to the deputy, Deputy Tobias (ph).
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Attorneys for the young man that were beaten in Inglewood a few days ago, I want to introduce John Sweeney (ph), the attorney for the father...
BECKER: All right. Ladies and gentlemen, the verdict appears correct as to form. If will you show it to the attorneys and if the state will publish the verdict.

BECKER: All right, gentlemen. Is there anything further you would request of this jury?

BECKER: All right. Ladies and gentlemen, what happens is is I will now be polling the jury. That means I will be asking you questions. What I am going to do is start with the first row and simply point to you and move across. And then I will go to the second row, all right. I am not going to identify you by name.

BECKER: All right. Let me have you approach. All right folks, just hang on just a minute. All right, ladies and gentlemen, the attorneys are going to talk with each other for just a minute. They are having one of those legal discussions and then I get to make a decision. So, we just all wait for a minute, all right?
PHILLIPS: Actually, a bit of a fogged-out shot there of the face -- there we go -- coming into clarity now. I think his face says it all. You're looking at the outcome, the verdict of the murder and racketeering trial of former DeKalb County Sheriff Sidney Dorsey. You have just been looking at a shot of Sidney Dorsey as the judge read the verdict, guilty, 12 counts, three counts not guilty in the racketeering trial and murder trial of former DeKalb County Sheriff Sidney Dorsey.
You may remember, we've been following this story for almost two years now. Dorsey was accused of ordering out the murder of sheriff- elect Derwin Brown on December 15, the year 2000, just days before Brown was to take office. Superior Court Judge Cynthia Becker, that's who you are looking at now, just read the verdict on the 15 counts of murder and corruption, 12 guilty, three not guilty. I don't know if we still have the shot there of Brown's widow, but sweating, shaking, taking deep breaths, very relieved, I think, at the outcome of what happened today in court.
