DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We have Jason Carroll, who was right at that news conference. I want to bring you in for a comment or two -- Jason.
JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Daryn, I think I stand with a lot of people who are out here, somewhere disappointed with what we heard at the process conference, at the beginning at least confirmation that the ballistic evidence from the recent shooting does in fact link the most recent shooting to the others that have occurred. Then at this that point, the sheriff going on to say that at 8:35, two people taken into custody by the Richmond area task force. He said that those two are being questioned with regards to the sniper shooting. He also said that the Richmond area task force has been in direct communication with the Maryland and North Virginia area task forces.

But then gave a message to the public, because the question was asked, what do you want the public to come away with in terms of knowing that two people are in custody? He said, I want to assure people that we will continue to press forward. He understands the fears and anxiety that's out there, and he had simply promised to keep everyone informed.

But again, two people are in custody, but not clear at this point that they are charged in any way at all in connection with the recent sniper shootings.

KAGAN: Jason, before I let you go, of course, we've been keeping all of our reporters on the move here, before you went to cover this news conference, you had been, for the last day or so, at the hospital, where the latest shooting victim has been recovering. Do we have an update on his condition?

CARROLL: First of all, that tells you how fast moving the story has been. As you say, we were out covering the 37-year-old man. At last word, he was still in critical but guarded condition. He was in surgery last night for about three hours. Doctors were able to remove what the surgeon called a bullet, which was mostly intact. Those were his words. Obviously, that helped police with their investigation.

What they did was last night, Daryn, as we had discussed time and time again, what they were doing is trying to repair much of the internal damage that was done by that single gunshot wound to the upper abdomen. This man's stomach was badly damaged. The left side of his pancreas, if I remember correctly. His spleen was destroyed, so that had to be completely removed. But this man, as were told, was very healthy before the shooting. That will definitely bode well in terms of his prognosis -- Daryn.

KAGAN: All right, Jason Carroll, in Richmond, Virginia, thank you so much.
