Strong Earthquake Rocks Northern Japan

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We're still trying to get more information for you on that big earthquake in Japan. We understand it was a seven-magnitude quake. It hit in northeastern Japan about 180 miles northeast of Tokyo. It was strong enough for the buildings to sway in the city.
Steve Herman (ph), a journalist working in Tokyo, spoke to us just moments ago.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We have had a major earthquake in the northern part of central Japan, a magnitude seven. And we are seeing some live television pictures coming in via NHK from helicopters above the city of Sendai, which is actually a bit south of where the brunt of the quake was, and we are seeing a number of houses on fire in Sendai, which is a major city in Japan with a population of more than a million. This quake was also felt in Tokyo some 400 kilometers or 250 miles south of the -- of the epicenter.

COSTELLO: We understand the quake happened about 40 mile -- or the epicenter of the quake was 40 miles underneath the water, which will probably minimize the effects of the earthquake. They also stopped flights taking out or flights going in and out of the airport there just in case. Don't know if those have resumed.
