Large Explosion in Paris, Injuries Reported

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We want to bring in David Clinch right now, because we understand there has been some sort of an explosion in Paris in a building.
Do we know much more about it?

DAVID CLINCH, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: We do not. We're just getting reports of this now, a building in the second arrondissement of Paris, a large explosion. According to the emergency workers who are already there on the scene, there may have been a number of victims already.

Now, you know, it's a big city, things can happen, buildings can explode. Obviously, we always immediately get our reporter there in Paris on the story, and we're working to get French television up so that we'll have some pictures.

COSTELLO: And our immediate thought of this, of course: terrorism.

CLINCH: Right.

COSTELLO: But we don't know anything about that yet.

CLINCH: We do not know anything about that yet. We're interested in finding out exactly what buildings are nearby and exactly what the location is. But at the moment all that we know is that a building in the second arrondissement, there has been an explosion and it has collapsed, so we're checking on that.

And I will let you know as soon as we get more.

As I said, we're going to talk very briefly about this Pew research annual report that came out about opinions around the world, in the Arab world in particular, opinions about the United States at an all-time low, post-Iraq. We talked earlier, though, about how that perhaps might change if the Mideast peace process is deemed to be a success. We won't know that for a while.

But one of the more interesting things which is hidden in the Pew research, the U.S. comes off badly, but the United Nations, interestingly, across the board in the Arab world and in Europe comes off almost as badly. The United Nations normally held...

COSTELLO: Why?

CLINCH: ... in very high regard in the rest of the world, if you want to put it that way; post-Iraq, not so. Apparently, the role of the United Nations deemed to have been a failure, if you want to put it that way, in Iraq.

So, that's a very interesting aspect that we need to pay attention to as well.

COSTELLO: All right, David Clinch, many thanks. You're going to get more information for us perhaps on Paris and what's happening there.

CLINCH: Absolutely.
