JOHN KING, CNN INSIDE POLITICS: I appreciate your insights. We have a lot of fascinating weeks ahead. And thank you for joining us today.
I hope you come back this tomorrow. I hope you also join us tonight for the Democratic coverage. Democratic Convention Coverage starts at 8:00 P.M. Eastern.
Anderson Cooper picks up our coverage right now.
ANDERSON COOPER, CNN RIGHT NOW: I'm Anderson Cooper. I want welcome viewers here in the United States and around the world.
A mixed picture in the U.S. battle against the coronavirus. More than half the country now holding steady or on the decline in terms in terms of new cases when compared to a week ago, that is the good news. That includes the entire southeast, the sight of multiple hotspots. The total number of new cases in the U.S. nearly cut in half from just a few days ago, continuing a downward trend.
Those encouraging signs are overshadowed by troubling ones, deaths continue to climb in 19 states and one of the largest schools in the U.S. to resume in-person learning. The University of North Carolina says it will shift online after 130 students tested positive for the virus in just the first week of classes.
In a blistering editorial just before that announcement, The Daily Tar Heel, the school's newspaper, described the situation as a cluster followed by an expletive. I'll speak with the opinion editor the next hour.
And as Moderna says enrollment is rapidly expanding in its phase three trial for a vaccine, Dr. Anthony Fauci offered his thoughts on when Americans can expect to receive it and who will get it first.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
DR. ANTHONY FAUCI, DIRECTOR, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES: By the beginning of 2021, there should be limited doses, tens of millions, not hundreds of millions of doses. So at that point, the process is to make a prioritization for those who would benefit the most and who would need it the most.
As we get well into 2021, it is likely that there will be enough doses for anyone who wanted it.

COOPER: Just a few days after the TSA announced it's set a new high for travelers during the pandemic, a new study found possible spread of the coronavirus on a commercial flight in Europe.
I want to go to right to CNN's Senior Medical Correspondent, Elizabeth Cohen. What are the details, Elizabeth?
ELIZABETH COHEN, CNN SENIOR MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: Anderson, this is very interesting. I think people always knew that it was possible and probably probable that you could get coronavirus from someone on a flight but these German researchers really did meticulous epidemiological research to show exactly what happened on one flight.
So this was a flight back in March from Tel Aviv to Frankfurt, so a little bit less than five hours. And there were seven infected people on that flight, seven infected passengers. They, of course, didn't realize that they were infected. They infected two other passengers who were not infected. They weren't infected when they boarded the plane but they were infected shortly while they were on the plane or shortly thereafter.
These infected seven passengers, this group, they sat across from the aisle from the two people who they infected, so they were in close proximity.
COOPER: That flight had about 100 people on it and only two became infected. What does that tell us?
COHEN: You know, it is surprisingly low, isn't it? And, remember, this is back in March, Anderson, when people were not wearing masks on flights. So what it tells is that, yes, this is an infectious virus but it is not measles. It is not the kind of thing where if one person had measles on a flight of people who, say, weren't vaccinated for measles, you would have many, many more people with measles. So I think that is important.
Something that certainly helped in this case was that these folks were sitting at the back of the plane and the air flow was towards the back so the air was flowing away from most of the other passengers. So that may have been sort of a lucky occurrence.
COOPER: Elizabeth Cohen, thanks.
We're going to discuss this in a moment in a moment with a doctor. But, first, the U.S. dealt with the coronavirus pandemic, the death rates among black and brown people have been much higher than for white people. The question is why.
CNN Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard is looking at a study that rules one big factor out. Jacqueline? JACQUELINE HOWARD, CNN HEALTH REPORTER: Anderson, we have known that the coronavirus pandemic has hit black and brown communities with disproportionate number of cases. This new study now shows that if black patients are given the same access to hospital care as white patients, then their death rates appear not to be different.
The researchers looked at more than 11,000 adults who were hospitalized with COVID-19 between February and May across 12 states. And the researchers found that 23 percent of white patients and 19 percent of black patients died in the hospital. What this suggests is that the racial disparities we have seen during the pandemic can be attributed largely to social factors, like living conditions, pre- existing health conditions, having insurance and equal access to care. Anderson?
COOPER: Well, we now know one of the most important ways to beat COVID-19 is to stop its spread and a new study may provide clues. It shows that the influenza viruses can spread through the air on dust, fibers and other particles. That's according to a study from the University of California.
Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Jake Deutsch joins me.
[13:05:01]
He is the Founder and Clinical Director for Cure Urgent Care.
While COVID-19 and the flu have similar symptoms, the two illnesses are caused by different viruses. Can you explain why this new research is important?
DR. JAKE DEUTSCH, EMERGENCY MEDICINE PHYSICIAN: Yes, because we really want to understand does the virus float in the air or does it fall to the ground? So if it's thought to be able to float and last longer in the air, then it is thought to be more easily contagious or have more spread. So that's what this study is claiming is that there's actually more floating than we would have expected to anticipate and therefore may be more contagious.
It's still quite a bit of a debate surrounding the topic.
COOPER: So what -- I mean, what can we do to decrease the risk?
DEUTSCH: Sure. So, the point I take from this is masks are so important. So the idea is that if it's going to float in the air, the more exposure that we have, the more likely we're going to get infected. But wearing masks reduces that exposure.
So keeping distanced and six feet distancing, like we are, staying outdoors, not being in a closed environment, that's all equally as important. So, extrapolating this information and applying what we know is what I want everybody to understand. Masks are really the key element in order to prevent infection.
COOPER: We just heard Elizabeth Cohen talking about how researchers in Germany found possible evidence of a spread of the virus on a five- hour flight. What does that tell you about the proximity people who have coronavirus and to those who don't and how that -- sort of what the connection is?
DEUTSCH: Right. I mean, it is obviously very scary that traveling is increasing and there may be potential risk of getting sick if people are infected. We do know the number of infections are down, like we've mentioned earlier, but, additionally, in that study, people weren't wearing masks. So I certainly took a flight and everybody is required to wear a mask throughout the entire journey.
So that's very encouraging when we really apply that to travel and I think that it's really critical that people compare this to some other case reports, one coming out of China that a patient infected and everybody on the plane was wearing masks and there were no illnesses reported with that.
So these are case studies. We have to really put it in perspective but masks, again, are the key to solving the infection rates.
COOPER: Dr. Jake Deutsch, I appreciate it. Thank you.
Coming up next, I'll speak with CEO of MyPillow, who is pushing an unproven therapeutic to the president. He has the president's ear on this.
Plus, an investigation is under way after dozens are infected at a wedding in Maine.
Also, president responds to Michelle Obama's speech saying, she is, quote, in over her head.
We'll be right back.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
[13:10:00]
COOPER: The president is backing a new unproven potential treatment for the coronavirus and he's got the president's ear on it, it's called oleandrin and it's an extract from a plant, oleander, that can be highly dangerous, toxic, even fatal consumed even in a small amount.
Mike Lindell is CEO and Founder of MyPillow. He is also the chair of President Trump's re-election campaign in Minnesota. He reportedly helped arrange an Oval Office meeting with the president in July about oleandrin. Lindell tells CNN the president was enthusiastic about the botanical. extract he's been talking about, oleandrin.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
DONALD TRUMP, U.S. PRESIDENT: I have heard of it, yes, go ahead.
REPORTER: Has the FDA approved it?
TRUMP: No, I haven't. I haven't. REPORTER: Is it something you would support?
TRUMP: Is it something that people are talking about very strongly? We'll look at it. We'll look at it. We are looking at a lot of different things.
I will say, the FDA's been great. They are very close, we are very close to a vaccine, very close to a therapeutic. i have heard that name mentioned. We'll find out.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
COOPER: Lindell recently got a spot on the Board of Phoenix Biotechnology as a director. He also has a financial stake in the company that is promoting this product. Phoenix Biotechnology makes oleandrin. Mike Lindell joins us now. Thank you for being with us, Mr. Lindell.
MIKE LINDELL, FOUNDER AND CEO, MYPILLOW: Thanks for having me on.
COOPER: You don't have a medical background, you're not a scientist, yet you're claiming this substance, which has not been studied in any meaningful way can cure COVID, and you have a financial stake in the company, you would profit from it if this is being sold widely. Morally, is that right?
LINDELL: Well, you know, I was contacted on Easter Sunday after -- that I've told the whole country to pray for the answer for this pandemic and this a great administration has had me -- anything I hear out there, whether it's good sanitizers or cures or anything to bring it back to the task force.
So this guy called me on Easter Sunday and said he had an answer to the virus and I reached out to my friend, Secretary Carson, who's on the task force, and he is a doctor and he looked into it all, got everything from the company and he said this is the real deal. It's tested by over 1,000 people to be safe. Medical --
COOPER: Wait a minute, sir. Wait minute. Stop. Let's stop. There's no public peer reviewed studies about this. There's no --
LINDELL: Yes, there is. Yes, there is --
COOPER: -- human trials that have been published anywhere.
LINDELL: Yes. There is safety test that was done of 2016 for over 1,000 people that it's safe to take. And if it's safe to take --
COOPER: Excuse me. So where's the study? The only study or report out is one report from the University of Texas, that was a pre-print study only involving cells in a test tube.
LINDELL: No, there's been human studies, absolutely human studies.
COOPER: Stop, sir. Where? Where are these human studies?
LINDELL: The FDA has got them all.
COOPER: Why aren't they publicly reviewed out there? Why aren't they've been peer reviewed?
LINDELL: Well, the 1,000 people are out there.
[13:15:00]
I don't know if you can't find it. I'm not a medical doctor. I just know that Ben Carson, who is on the task force, he brought it to the president going --
COOPER: Okay. But, stop, sir. Ben Carson has, in the past, been paid to promote supplements and got in trouble for it back in 2015. So he has track record on that. You are telling people that this cures COVID. You have no studies to prove it. And you are saying 1,000 people were tested --
LINDELL: I have my own study. When I seen the test of 1,000 people that's safe, that's all I needed.
COOPER: Sir -- okay. If you've seen this test, where is it?
LINDELL: I have over 100 friends and family -- this thing works. It is the miracle of all time.
COOPER: Sir, you said you've seen this test. Where is it?
LINDELL: The tests are out there. The 1,000 people, phase one and phase two --
COOPER: Where is the test? Show it to us.
LINDELL: I don't have the test on me.
COOPER: Name where it's from. Who did the test? What university? What doctors?
LINDELL: Well, you'd have to talk to -- I guess, you'd have to have Dr. Carson and the company that all the tests that were done on your show.
COOPER: You said you saw the test. You read test. So, tell me about the test. Where was it done?
LINDELL: The test, it was done on over 1,000 people.
COOPER: Where was it done and what were the procedures for the test? You read this. Let's hear it.
LINDELL: The procedure was used against cancer so they did -- when you do a safety test of phase one and phase two, it is to see if there's any --
COOPER: There's been no phase one and phase two on this drug, sir.
LINDELL: What's that?
COOPER: There has been no phase one and phase two on this drug, sir.
LINDELL: Yes, absolutely, there has. The FDA has had it since April, 100 percent. You are just misconstrued because the media is trying to take away this amazing cure that works for everybody.
COOPER: Okay. Just for our viewers, you have no medical background, you are not a scientist, a guy called in April said he had this product, you are now on the board and going to make money from the sale of this product.
LINDELL: No, no, no.
COOPER: The reason he reached out to you is because you have the ear of the president so get a meeting with the president and you stand to make money from this. How do you sleep at night?
LINDELL: Anderson, that is your narrative. This is --
COOPER: You're not going to make money from this?
LINDELL: -- I just got it last week because they want -- I don't care about the money. I think I've proven that. I had millions of dollars to everything that happens from hurricanes to $4 million worth of masks I gave out from pocket. I'm just want to say if you let me talk here --
COOPER: Sure.
LINDELL: I will tell you, they put me on the board last week because when this gets approved by the FDA, which it will, it's passed every safety test, they have all the studies done --
COOPER: The FDA doesn't really approve supplements.
LINDELL: When this comes out -- this company wanted me because I help people. That's my passion and I can scale things to get it out to everybody to save our country, to get --
COOPER: Right. Sir, there's no evidence.
LINDELL: -- to save lives.
COOPER: How are you different than a snake oil salesman? You have no medical background, there is no evidence of the substance, it hasn't been tested in animals or humans.
LINDELL: I think my platform stands by itself. I have a platform that God gave me of integrity and trust. I would not go all in on something to help people if it wasn't true.
COOPER: If it wasn't true, you wouldn't do it?
LINDELL: Absolutely, I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't do anything if it wasn't truthful, if it wasn't -- I didn't do my due diligence, just like I did my due diligence when I met our president before he was president, the greatest president in the history of the United States.
COOPER: Okay.
LINDELL: I did my due diligence. I didn't just risk my company --
COOPER: So -- okay, let me ask you about due diligence because you run a company called MyPillow, you ran ads that claimed your pillow could help with snoring and migraines and fibromyalgia. Prosecutors in nine counties in California sued you and you settled for a million dollars and are not allowed to make scientific claims without any proof about your pillows.
You were given -- you rating from the Better Business Bureau in Minnesota lowered to a F for among other things, misleading customers on a buy one, get one offer. That's not a great track record for honesty, sir. You paid a million dollars.
LINDELL: And, Anderson, that's when I was attacked, when I knew nothing about politics. I met the president before he was president, so everybody attacked me. I didn't do anything. I didn't know about --
COOPER: You paid a million dollars to settle claims against you in California.
LINDELL: Because the way in our country -- the way it is in our country, if you don't settle, they run you out of money even though I was right. These were testimonials I had from people. These were real people. We said to 200,000 testimonials.
COOPER: You were claiming to medical -- you were claiming --
LINDELL: No, I wasn't claiming anything. These were people.
COOPER: -- fibromyalgia, migraines, headaches.
LINDELL: You never see -- you can pull up an ad, Anderson. There is no, absolutely, no advertising that was done like that. These were testimonials from customers. These were testimonials.
COOPER: Right, that you were advertising.
LINDELL: I settled because I settled, saying I did nothing wrong. But you don't --
COOPER: So you run a commercial where you -- you run an infomercial where you have customers claiming medical benefits, and you're saying, oh, I wasn't making any, these were just testimonials? That's --
LINDELL: No, these were testimonials online, like testimonials online that were -- yes. These were -- these testimonials that we run that just like testimonials on any product.
[13:20:03]
COOPER: Okay. LINDELL: And you know, what they try and do is feed off of frivolous lawsuits in this country and there were things that are done wrong too.
COOPER: Sir, there are -- 170,000 Americans have died. There are families that are desperate for any kind of remedy, any kind of cure and you, sir, who have no medical background, are pushing a product made by a plant, by the way, which is toxic and deadly and --
LINDELL: Anderson, we used to --
COOPER: And you were pushing this product that is only one -- there's one report. It's not even a real study because it is not peer reviewed.
LINDELL: Yes, you're going to hear about it. Just because you're -- Anderson, you are misconstrued. You are misconstrued.
COOPER: You're saying -- I'm going to take --
LINDELL: There has been a study. I wouldn't go all in and take it myself every day if a thousand is tested, the safety tested for --
COOPER: It is not safety test.
LINDELL: You can use it.
COOPER: No, sir.
LINDELL: Yes, it is. You're going to will hear about this. This is what all the news cast did to take away --
COOPER: Sir, this is the time to hear about it right now. If you're pushing something, you're claiming --
LINDELL: This is the cure. This is the miracle to the country. This works and I'm standing by what I believe in. I have no monetary gain here. This is all --
COOPER: Sop, sir, that is not true.
LINDELL: I want to help people.
COOPER: That's not true. You're going to make money from this. You are on the board of this company. You have taken a financial stake.
LINDELL: They asked me last week to go on the board. There is no --
COOPER: Yes, so that you can go out and promote it because you're willing to promote anything because -- because even if it doesn't work.
LINDELL: No, that's not true, Anderson, and you know it. I don't know. You probably sleep on a MyPillow.
COOPER: Well, sir, I don't. I don't, actually. I don't know even who you are.
LINDELL: I don't Secretary Carson -- I don't think Secretary Carson would bring this to the president with me if he didn't think and try and get it out there if it didn't work.
COOPER: Really? Look at his track record on promoting supplements for which he was paid.
LINDELL: I am just telling, this is the answer. Wouldn't you want to save lives? This is what my heart. I gave it to my friends and family. This saved their lives.
COOPER: You are like a snake oil salesman. You could be in the old west standing on a box telling people to drink your amazing elixir that they have no clue.
LINDELL: No, I give the glory to God. I do what Jesus has me do. I give the glory to God. And I want to help people --
COOPER: Do you think Jesus wants you out there promoting remedies that are not remedies because they've never tested?
LINDELL: I am not money-driven. And why would I do this? Ask yourself, why would I ruin my reputation if I didn't believe in this product?
COOPER: Money. You don't have a great reputation. You don't have a great reputation.
LINDELL: Really? Well, I mean, you'd say that, I'm going to pray for you, Anderson.
COOPER: You've settled for a million dollars in California. You have an F from the Better Business Bureau.
LINDELL: You are in my prayers, Anderson, because they destroyed me when I went all in for this great president. That's what it was.
COOPER: So the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota is going after you because you support Trump?
LINDELL: I was up for their torture where their highest award, they give to the best companies in the country.
COOPER: Then they listened to your advertisements.
LINDELL: As soon as I went all in for the president, the Better Business Bureau lowered me from an A+ to an F.
COOPER: That's just sad. That's sad.
LINDELL: It is sad that the companies do stuff like that.
COOPER: A man to profess is faith, for you lie to like this is really extraordinary to me. The Better Business Bureau looked at your advertising. LINDELL: I'll stand by the truth and that is the truth.
COOPER: Okay. What you are doing --
LINDELL: Every time I get attacked is because of political reasons.
COOPER: Okay. Just so our viewers know, what you are doing is you were running two for one giveaway ads, saying, two for one price and you were doing that so often that it actually became the regular price. And when people actually looked, there were so complaints when people looked. Wait a minute, the actual price if you doubled the price, it's the same as the two for one offer. It wasn't a sale offer. And you were running it for so long that became the regular price and that's why you were downgraded to an F because it was misleading --
LINDELL: No. Here is what it was, Anderson. I met with the Better Business Bureau in the spring, in that fall. And they said to me -- I said, what do you mean I can't have a sale price on MyPillow, a regular suggested retail and a regular price. And they go, but you're your own manufacturer, Mike. And I go, so if I made my stuff in China, I would be okay? And they said, yes. I said you all ought to be ashamed of yourself. I said you just well give me an F because nobody is going to believe this, that you're telling I can't give a great (INAUDIBLE) to my customer.
COOPER: They published the report. Anybody can look at it and they will know you're not telling the truth.
LINDELL: The whole country, I stand with an F. It's fantastic. The Better Business Bureau is one of the most corrupt organizations in our country. It's pay for play. If you give them money, they give you a good rating. I don't stand for that kind of stuff.
COOPER: You now make money manufacturing masks, right?
LINDELL: No. I gave away $4 million out of my own pocket. That is a fallacy.
COOPER: Okay. Well, that's nice. That's good. That's impressive.
LINDELL: $4 million and you check those facts, $4 million out of Mike Lindell's pocket donated. How many people out there can claim that?
COOPER: The masks that you're making -- you actually don't wear a mask. And you have actually proudly said that you don't need to wear a mask because you take this product.
LINDELL: That's correct. But I do wear a mask when I'm supposed to, if I'm around other people to be respectful because they don't know that I can't give it, I can't give them, and I cannot get the virus.
[13:25:03]
COOPER: Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, who actually has a medical degree, worked as an epidemic intelligence service officer with the Centers for Disease Control and prevention, says, and I quote, about this product, don't take it, stay away, this is quackery, do not take medicines of any kind to either prevent this infection or treat it that hasn't been vetted very, very carefully by the scientific community.
You're saying the president or the FDA or Americans at large would listen to you and not people like Dr. Schaffner and other reputable doctors out there who haven't taken money to promote supplements in the past.
LINDELL: Dr. Schaffner is misconstrued. This has already had all its safety test and it's before the FDA --
COOPER: Sir, that is just a complete lie. That is just a ball-faced lie. It has not had --
LINDELL: No, it's not. And when you are proven wrong, Anderson, you're going to have me back on your show when everything I'm saying is truthful.
COOPER: Has it been tested in animals, sir? Has it been tested humans and peer reviewed studies?
LINDELL: It's been tested in humans. 100 percent, our tests has been done in humans and it's not published but the FDA has it right now. You just don't know about because you tried to take a narrative and tried to hurt me and the president and Dr. Ben Carson.
COOPER: Why wouldn't you publicly -- why shouldn't the public be able to see these alleged study that you claim exist?
LINDELL: Ask the FDA. It's with the FDA right now. I don't know what you want me to do. It's been sitting with the FDA since --
COOPER: You can make a Xerox, sir. Did you give them all the copies of the study? You don't have one. You said you read one.
LINDELL: All I'm doing is telling the public it works and 100 percent believe it and it saved my family and friends' lives.
COOPER: You said you read the study. I'm following up. Did you actually read the study, this study you claim exists?
LINDELL: The one that I read was the thousand people they did the safety test on, which has been done since 2016.
COOPER: Okay. Where were they tested? Who conducted the study?
LINDELL: I don't have it in front of me. But it will come out. Maybe you should investigate that.
COOPER: Do you remember anything about what you read?
LINDELL: What's that? 1,000 people on safety test.
COOPER: You don't remember anything -- okay, besides 1,000 people, you don't remember anything about the study? LINDELL: Yes, absolutely. When you test a supplement, when it goes on the dietary list, they do studies of how much you can take before you start getting side effects. This was 50 times more. It was given to people that have --
COOPER: So if this is -- does make it on to the supplement list, this would be sold as a dietary supplement, that's how you'll skirt this, you won't be able to actually say -- you won't actually be able to advertise it as for COVID-19, correct? You would put it on as a dietary supplement. And by going out and doing a lot of publicity, you would just hope that people would use it off-label believing it had COVID benefits and you will profit financially. That seems, to me, the theory that you're --
LINDELL: No. Nobody said that's going to happen, or it's in for both or it's in for an IND, which we're waiting on. The FDA knows it passed every safety test. They could give it to us today on the dietary list. We would like the IND, which we applied also for the drug side.
COOPER: Why should the FDA be wasting time on something like this, has no proof of anything? The military -- you know what? A military actually looked into this, did testing and said you know what, it's inconclusive, we're not going to do further testing because it's a waste of time. We have more important things to do.
LINDELL: No, that's not what they said. The FDA is doing a fine job, like the president said. They are the ones that have all this. They're doing their due diligence.
COOPER: Well, that is what the military said at Fort Dietrich. They actually did test it. They said it was inconclusive and that they're not doing further testing because there's a lot more important things for them to be looking at.
LINDELL: No. The FDA has gotten everything from the company and they have gotten everything, tests you don't get to see right now because you're not the FDA, Mr. Anderson. When it comes out, when the FDA gives us the IND --
COOPER: But you got to see it?
LINDELL: You know what, I'm going to ask you this.
COOPER: You got to see a study but you don't remember anything about it, you don't remember who did it, don't remember was there a control group.
LINDELL: Mr. Anderson, what do you think I'm on here for?
COOPER: To promote this because you think that just by coming on and getting this name out there for this unproven thing, desperate people will get it.
LINDELL: Why are you trying discredit a thing that works? When we have such a great president --
COOPER: Because there's no evidence, sir.
LINDELL: -- with all private sector companies into this and to reach out for all solutions.
COOPER: Because you are a snake oil salesman telling people to take the product.
LINDELL: Well, you are calling me names and I have kept --
COOPER: I'm not mentioning names.
LINDELL: I pray for you. I don't call you names. Mr. Anderson, I don't call names. I don't call your network names. Why are you attacking me? I just want to help people and save lives.
COOPER: Because you are telling people who are desperate to take something that is unproven --
LINDELL: No, I didn't tell them.
COOPER: -- potentially dangerous and you have no evidence to back it up. It is kind of morally bankrupt.
LINDELL: They only thing I have done is I've given it to my friends and family to save their lives and I'm not telling you to take anything.
[13:30:03]
I'm telling you, when the FDA approves it --
COOPER: You'd want to get it on shelves for people to take.
LINDELL: No.
