FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: It's not even spring yet, but already the world's most famous clothing designers are giving us a preview of the fall fashions. And New York's fashion week wrapped up just last night, and our Gail O'Neill is just back from New York and here to give us a look at what we might be seeing in the stores or at least some inspiration from these fashion designers.

GAIL O'NEILL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, because we're actually looking ahead now. We're looking to fall and winter of 2002.

WHITFIELD: That's so hard to do.

O'NEILL: Not really. Not if you love fashion.

WHITFIELD: We haven't gotten to spring yet.

O'NEILL: Trust me, women who love this stuff are already waiting to see it in the stores.

WHITFIELD: Wow.

O'NEILL: And I spoke to one designer -- as you mentioned, Patricia Field, who's actually the costumer for the women in "Sex and the City"...

WHITFIELD: Yes.

O'NEILL: ... who have the most beautiful wardrobe in television, I'd say -- to find out what her take was on the one comeback item. And we'll hear what she had to say.

WHITFIELD: So what's hot?

O'NEILL: She's going to tell us. We're going to roll to Patricia Fields.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PATRICIA FIELDS, COSTUME DESIGNER, "SEX AND THE CITY": The trench coat. The classic trench coats. Slim, dark for the most part, but some light. I think we haven't seen a trench coat for a while, and that is surely a classic...

(END VIDEO CLIP) O'NEILL: OK, here's a look from the Anne Klein runway. This is a classic look; the trench coat, as she said. But in a leather, so you're already up to the minute.

WHITFIELD: Yes.

O'NEILL: And here we have another one in pinstripe with the epaulets, pulled up collar, kind of like Inspector Clouseau. It's a very, very classic look. And if you notice, a cinched waist and a big beautiful circle skirt.

WHITFIELD: So femininity is still in, or...

O'NEILL: Isn't that nice to hear?

WHITFIELD: Yes. In a big way now.

O'NEILL: In a very, very big way. Tops are kind of snug- fitting, but not really too tight. So they're following the female form. Skirts are very full. If you spin around, you can get a little volume going under there. And there have been some sweaters, big bulky fisherman-type sweaters that have been paired with satiny skirts. That's another look that's coming back.

WHITFIELD: Oh. And I see belts seem to be big now.

O'NEILL: Belts are big, so the waistline is very important. The key here is softness and elegance without being big and bulky, but comfortable at the same time. Here we have a beautiful look from Anne Klein. That's that fisherman sweater I was describing -- big patch pockets, and a beautiful satin skirt underneath.

So you can mix what we typically think of as comfortable with what we think of as elegant and get away with it this fall.

WHITFIELD: And maybe for once some of these fashions look like things that folks will actually want to wear, as opposed to -- a lot of times you look at the high fashion shows and you think, "I'm not going to wear that, no way. That's just a little bit too flamboyant or too out there."

O'NEILL: Hard to say if it's a sign of the times or a sign of post September 11. But the fashions were really kind of more pulled back, more tailored and very, very wearable, which I think every woman can relate to.

WHITFIELD: So now what happens if you see some of this stuff and you really want to find a way to wear it but you can't afford, you know, the top designer stuff? Is there any way you can find it?

O'NEILL: That's the age old love-hate affair that we have with fashion, isn't it? We see things, we say, "I love it, but I can't afford it."

WHITFIELD: Right. O'NEILL: Three things. Recycle, go through your closets, chances are you have a big bulky sweater that looks like the one we just saw. You have a full skirt, maybe something that your mother has passed on to you. Number two, if you shop in stores today -- department stores -- sales are going on for the fall and winter looks. Spot a trend on the runway for next fall and winter and then just pick it up this winter at 70 percent off, which is the way I do things. And, thirdly, you might want to just treat yourself to one signature look. So maybe it's going to be a trench coat, but make it a classic. Maybe not as big a collar, but something that has that streamline silhouette that's going to last beyond next fall and winter.

WHITFIELD: Did you go shopping up there to give us an idea? Or have someone go shopping for us?

O'NEILL: Window shopping, but I behaved. If CNN wants to send me back, I'll be happy to do it.

WHITFIELD: Right, right, right. OK. Now how about shoes?

O'NEILL: Oh, there was a big trend there. Again, I spoke to Patricia Field, because I love finding out what the ladies on "Sex and the City" will be wearing. And, again, let's cut to Pat and see what she had to say about that.

WHITFIELD: OK.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

FIELD: One signature thing that keeps repeating is a boot. Mostly, a knee boot, to-the-knee boot. Other lengths, but definitely predominating knee boot with a heel. But I've also seen lower...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WHITFIELD: Wow. So boots are back, huh?

O'NEILL: They're back...

WHITFIELD: High, low, black, white.

O'NEILL: Well I think they did leave for a while, but they are definitely back.

WHITFIELD: Oh, OK. Even into the fall and perhaps into the spring, et cetera, huh?

O'NEILL: Absolutely, hang on to them. You're going to pay for it.

WHITFIELD: All right. All right thanks a lot Gail. I appreciate it.

O'NEILL: You're welcome.

WHITFIELD: Thanks for that fashion tip. Now we're all set for the fall upcoming.
