Interview With Herb Vinick, Neal MacDonald

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: You might call them the boys of summer. A group of South Florida men, all 80 years and older, have completed their second pin-up calendar. Reporter Lisa Hayward with affiliate WPBF caught up with these sexy seniors at the Carlisle.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Don't you look great?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Don't I?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yeah.

LISA HAYWARD, WPBF CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): They are the senior centerfolds of South Florida, 29 silver-haired men, all of them 80 years old and up and still turning heads.

LEE JOSSELSON, THE CARLISLE, PALM BEACH: They're handsome. They're gorgeous. And they're young and they're vibrant and they're full of vim and vigor and sex and everything. They got it all. But we're not getting any of it.

HAYWARD: But they will get an eyeful of these men who live at the Carlisle retired community center in Lantana. They star in a senior beefcake calendar that just came out.

RAYMOND FOX, CALENDAR MODEL: It looks pretty good. They should have several more shots of me.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Oh, boy. Look at you. You're fat on there.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Thanks very much. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) I lost 30 pounds and she says I'm fat on there.

HAYWARD: The men can be seen posing by the piano, standing in front of their favorite sports car and pumping iron. Organizers hope this "men of the Carlisle" calendar is as big of a hit as it was last year.

LEE RAPPAPORT, WIFE: Last year it was exciting, and they ended up on the front page of "The New York Times." And we got telephone calls from all over the country, from people we hadn't seen for 30 years. HAYWARD: And just like celebrities, each of these senior stars signed his autograph on the group picture. That included a special four-legged friend.

PAULA RENARD, THE CARLISLE, PALM BEACH: I think it's a very good idea. And it keeps everybody busy and happy.

PHILLIPS: All right. Now joining us are two of those beefcake pin-ups. We've got Herb Vinick. He is 86 years old. And Neal MacDonald; he's 81. They're joining us live from Miami. Hello, gentlemen.

HERB VINICK, CALENDAR PIN-UP: Hello.

NEAL MACDONALD, CALENDAR PIN-UP: Hello.

PHILLIPS: All right, so I got to ask. Herb, first. What makes you so sexy, Herb?

VINICK: Just a natural thing with me.

PHILLIPS: Have you always been a real sexy guy?

VINICK: Always been sexy.

PHILLIPS: What do you think the most sexy thing is about you?

VINICK: I didn't hear that.

PHILLIPS: What do you think is the most sexy thing about you?

VINICK: My being alert and aware of women.

PHILLIPS: All right. Hey, it never stops, does it, Herb?

VINICK: It goes on forever.

PHILLIPS: OK, Neal, what about you? What makes you so sexy?

MACDONALD: I'm not sure. I don't know. Maybe it's my messed up hair. I don't know.

PHILLIPS: Oh, wow. I'm looking at a shot of you. You're in your bathing suit.

MACDONALD: Yeah, we're in the pool there.

PHILLIPS: How do you keep your chest looking so good? Do you pump iron?

MACDONALD: No. Just walking.

PHILLIPS: OK.

MACDONALD: That's my exercise.

PHILLIPS: So that's all it takes, just a little walking?

MACDONALD: That's all.

PHILLIPS: So I've got to know, are you guys getting tons of dates now?

MACDONALD: Well...

VINICK: It's questionable.

MACDONALD: The opportunity is there.

PHILLIPS: Well, Herb, have any women come up to you and said, hey, you know, Herb, you're looking good, you know, let's go on a date?

VINICK: No, only at the beginning of our occupation at the Carlisle.

PHILLIPS: Well, let me tell you, where is the proceeds going to this calendar? Neal, why don't you tell me.

MACDONALD: They're going to the fire department in Lantana, as I understand.

PHILLIPS: Wow. That's a great idea.

MACDONALD: Yes.

PHILLIPS: Whose idea was this to even do the calendar? Herb?

MACDONALD: It was Susan Mahony's (ph) idea to do the calendar.

PHILLIPS: OK. So she works at the retirement home?

MACDONALD: She works there in sales promotion and advertising, I presume.

PHILLIPS: OK.

MACDONALD: And it was her idea.

PHILLIPS: All right, so tell me about the response. When we saw the piece beforehand, have a lot of people been coming up to you and asking for autographs and especially the women? You guys have got to tell me what the women are saying. Come on, Neal, what have they been saying?

MACDONALD: They come up and ask you to dinner once in a while. And you know everybody. It's a family type thing. And you know everyone there, really, after a few months of living there. So it's interesting. PHILLIPS: Well, and, Herb, you know, everyone always talks about retirement homes and says, man, I don't want to go to a retirement home, and that's just the end of the road. But you know what, this is definitely not the case. I mean, it looks like the living is just beginning.

VINICK: Well, I suppose you're right there. But it takes a little adjustment. It is a little different form of living. But I would say I would recommend it for most men in our age and our circumstances.

PHILLIPS: So, now, Neal was saying that he's been asked out to dinner. No one's approached you?

VINICK: To be truthful, no.

PHILLIPS: Well, you know what, you want to make a plea right now?

VINICK: I think I should if I'm going to do any improvement on my situation.

PHILLIPS: And you're available, right?

VINICK: Yes.

PHILLIPS: All right, sell yourself, Herb. Why are you such a stud? Come on, now.

VINICK: I guess it is a natural thing with me.

PHILLIPS: He's sticking with it. OK, Neal, sell me. You know, we have got a lot of single women in this newsroom here. Tell me, you know, tell me the best thing about you.

MACDONALD: Oh, I like to dance and sight-see and walk and, you know, I get around a lot.

PHILLIPS: Can we -- can you foxtrot?

MACDONALD: Oh, sure.

PHILLIPS: Oh, Neal, I'll be your date, all right? Are you available tomorrow night?

MACDONALD: I'm open.

PHILLIPS: All right.

MACDONALD: Love to have you.

PHILLIPS: Oh, Herb and Neal, you guys are just fantastic. This calendar is terrific. It's going to a wonderful cause. We applaud you. You really added a lot of spark to our afternoon.

MACDONALD: Well, thank you very much. VINICK: Glad to hear that.

PHILLIPS: All right, OK, you guys update me now if you get any more dates after this, all right?

MACDONALD: I hope so.

VINICK: I hope it helps.

PHILLIPS: Right on. We'll have you back on with your two new hotty girlfriends.

MACDONALD: OK.

VINICK: Great.

PHILLIPS: OK, guys. Take care.
