Penguin Chick on the Loose

KRIS OSBORN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, if you're in Tacoma, Washington, you may want to keep a close eye out. There's an escapee on the loose. Police and the Coast Guard have been called out the help in this search. Glenn Farley from CNN affiliate KING say the subject is short, about six-and-a-half pounds, dressed in eveningwear, and, here's the clincher -- it has a beak.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GLENN FARLEY, KING REPORTER (voice-over): The penguin pool at the Point Defiance Zoo. Chicks had almost gotten out before, requiring zookeepers to put in this wire and mesh, but apparently for one chick that wasn't enough.

KAREN GOODROWE, DEFIANCE ZOO: What we think happened is that one of the chicks went either over or under the mesh, the barrier that we've put in to keep them in. And from there hopped up on the rocks and out and down.

FARLEY (on camera): But while this animal is a chick, it doesn't look like a small, round, cuddly ball of fluff.

(voice-over): Only about three months old, the chicks look very much like the adults, only their stripes are not as pronounced. The chick in question also has a bright orange band on its wings. There's even a wanted poster. This photograph of one of the chick's siblings. And if you see it?

GOODROWE: What they should not do is try to capture it themselves, because those little beaks are pretty sharp, and they could be pretty adept at poking things.

FARLEY: The Coast Guard and police are also on alert. So far, there's only been one report of a sighting in the first 10 hours. Chilly Willie (ph) still on the lam. At the Point Defiance Zoo, Glenn Farley, KING 5 News.
