ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: A thick snow blankets much of the Northeast this evening. Look at those pictures, unbelievable. Parts of Upstate New York got two feet. New England hard hit, Maine is bracing for a blizzard tonight.
It is hard to get around in that kind of snow, unless you're on skis. And Jason Carroll's latest report starts with a sound that is music to the ears of ski resort operators in Vermont.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): With the ring of a bell ...

(CROWD CHEERING)

CARROLL: ...and the snap of a boot, the ski season kicked into full swing, thanks to another winter storm that swept through the Northeast bringing with it two feet of additional snow in Stratton, Vermont.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You can always have more snow. Never want the snow to stop.

CARROLL: By late Saturday afternoon the snow still hadn't stopped. It was knee-deep in some spots. Out there the conditions were near perfect.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It is powdery with some ice underneath, so if you fall, you just keep tumbling down, and it hurts. Helmets are real good.

CARROLL: Ideal conditions for the slopes, but not for the street. Treacherous roadways made getting here a much longer trip than expected.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Normally the drive takes about three and a half hours from Northern New Jersey up to Stratton, and it took us five hours last night.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Unbelievable. I mean, it was just coming down like an inch and a half an hour. It took us four hours just to get from -- uh, to Albany.

CARROLL: Despite the hazardous roads thousands braved them anyway to get here. Good news for Stratton's economy, which was hurt last year by a dismal snow season.

SKY FOULKES, GENERAL MANAGER, STRATTON MOUNTAIN RESORT: Business is very good. So we're happy and all the crews here just love the snow and the people love the snow. So, it is great for us in this business.

CARROLL (on camera): Just to put this all into perspective, last year 111 inches of snow fell for the entire season. So far this year they've already had 111 inches of snow and it is still early January.

Jason Carroll, CNN, Stratton, Vermont.
