CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: We've been telling you about a pregnant woman. She's pregnant about eight months, and she's now missing, Laci Peterson. No sign of her just yet, but more focus on her husband. Big turn of events. Suddenly he was being looked at, at a crime that was committed years ago in San Luis Obispo, but now yet another turn of events, some turns in this case. CNN's Paul Vercammen is reporting in from Modesto, California.
Paul, bring us up to speed. Is Scott Peterson a suspect in another case in San Luis Obispo?
PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, not according to sheriff department officials there. They have debunked that rumor. That rumor surfaced today in the "Modesto Bee" and basically what they said is that Scott Peterson have absolutely no link to the disappearance of Kristin Smart, who was then a 19-year-old Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student, and we'll have more on that in just a while, Carol.
LIN: All right, in the meantime he is still not officially a suspect in his wife's disappearance, right?
VERCAMMEN: Officially is the key word, I think, there Carol. Obviously, the police here are turning over every stone and considering a number of people as suspects, and while they won't go on the record and say he is officially a suspect, you better believe after the recent turn of events here in Modesto the talk that he now might have a girlfriend down South and that he took out an insurance policy, he is certainly being looked at. Whether or not if they want to officially call him a suspect, well that's a different story.
LIN: Got you. All right, I know you're still working the story. We just wanted to check in with you because we knew there were some latest developments there. Thanks so much. Paul Vercammen live in Modesto, California.
