CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Laci Peterson's due date is about two weeks away. The last 24 hours have been also filled with new developments in her disappearance. CNN's David Mattingly is in Modesto with more on that.
David, I know you are hearing about a new character in this drama?

DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right, Carol. We went through almost an entire week of silence in the Laci Peterson case then all at once here is what we have. We have claims of an affair; a family split by a lack of trust; a husband losing the support of his in-laws; and then to top it all off the emergence of a girlfriend.

Last night 28-year-old single mother, Amber Frey, told reporters that she and Scott Peterson, that is Laci's husband, had become involved romantically almost a month before Laci's disappearance.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

AMBER FREY, SCOTT PETERSON'S FORMER GIRLFRIEND: Scott told me he was not married. We did have a romantic relationship. When I discovered he was involved in the disappear - the Laci Peterson disappearance case I immediately contacted the Modesto Police Department.

Although I could have sold -- or sold the photos of Scott and I to tabloids, I knew this was not the right thing to do, for fear of jeopardizing the case or the police investigation, I will not comment further.

I am very sorry for Laci's family and the pain that this has caused them. And I pray for her safe return as well.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MATTINGLY: Now, police say they have ruled out Amber as a potential suspect in this case. They have not ruled out, however, Scott Peterson. And yesterday his in-laws, Laci's family, say they can no longer support Scott. Friends of Laci tell us, however, that they are still holding out hope for her safe return.

One of her friends today telling us, Carol, that the porch light is still on.

LIN: All right, hope springs eternal, in the meantime. Any reaction from Scott Peterson and his family?

MATTINGLY: They are in San Diego. And the family so far has had not response from what they saw last night. There was some discussion earlier in the week that they would have some sort of event like a prayer vigil this weekend, but they decided to call that off, in part, because of the Super Bowl in San Diego. They felt that they might not be able to compete for airtime.

LIN: Thank you very much, David Mattingly, reporting live in Modesto, California. Still working the case there.
