CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: For the first time in five years the Grammys are returning to New York City, and a lot of intense emotions are expected at tomorrow night's show. The September 11 attacks influenced several of the artists whose pieces are up for Song of the Year.
CNN's Arthel Neville previews the music industry's big night.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ARTHEL NEVILLE, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The 45th Grammy Awards are bound for New York City and musicians like this (unintelligible) veteran, this jazzy newcomer, rap's top seller, and this tenacious teen.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I would have been like blown away if I was just nominated for one. I couldn't even believe it.

NEVILLE: Will share the stage with these talented chicks in what could prove to be one of the most dynamic ceremonies in recent years. The Dixie Chicks have a chance for Best Album of the Year but they face stiff competition from Bruce Springsteen, Nora Jones, Eminem, and Nelly.

NELLY, NOMINEE: Now you have two albums, hip-hop albums nominated for Album of the Year. It's like the first time in Grammy history, so you know it says a lot for hip-hop.

NEVILLE: Nelly and Eminem are also nominated for Record of the Year, an honor shared by the musician and the song's producer. Canadian rockers Nickelback and pianist Vanessa Carlton (ph) and Nora Jones round out that category.

September 11 themes echo through the Song of the Year category with Allan Jackson's ode "Where Were you When the World Stopped Turning"?

NEVILLE: And Bruce Springsteen's anthem, "The Rising."

(VIDEO CLIP OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN)

ERIK PARKER, MUSIC EDITOR, VIBE: This (unintelligible) September 11 theme. I think that's going to be overwhelming to the judges and I would imagine that the Academy would one to definitely identify that for all history.

(VIDEO CLIP OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN)

NEVILLE: Three young ladies challenge the elder statesmen for Song of the Year. Vanessa Carlton contends with "1,000 Miles," Nora Jones for "Don't Know why" and Avril Levine with "Complicated."

The Best New Artist category is dominated by women, including Levine, Nora Jones, Michelle Branch, and Ashanti. Only one male made the cut, John Mayer.

JOHN MAYER, NOMINEE: It's an amazing way to be told that you're welcome somewhere, you know. I mean anyone can make a record and print it up and it's amazing to have someone say take off your coat and hang out. We like you here, you know.

NEVILLE: Among the artists scheduled to perform are Cheryl Crow, Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, No Doubt, and Eminem. For the city that never sleeps this year's Grammys promise to be the best reason yet to stay up all night.

In New York, Arthel Neville, CNN.
