ANDREA KOPPEL, CNN ANCHOR: We start this hour with new developments in a case that's captured the attention of the entire country. As we reported, Scott Peterson is awaiting arraignment in Northern California, and the hunt for his missing wife is now a murder investigation.
Having dyed his hair and grown a goatee, Peterson was not arrested far from the Mexican border. Shortly thereafter, officials announced the deaths of his missing wife Laci and the couple's unborn child.

CNN's Mike Brooks is standing by now in Modesto, where the husband Scott Peterson is being held -- Mike.

MIKE BROOKS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Andrea, that's right. Scott Peterson is being held just a few blocks from here. We are at the Modesto police headquarters. He's being held at the Stanislaus County Jail, just a few blocks from here. He arrived here from San Diego at about midnight and was booked into the jail at about 12:09 a.m.

In fact, when he came in, there were about 50 demonstrators out across the street from the jail, protesting holding signs, baby killer, murderer, those kinds of things. And had to call in extra police just to handle the crowd.

Now, Scott was arrested yesterday at approximately 11:10 AM just outside the prestigious Torrey Pines (ph) Golf Course in San Diego. In fact, one of the employees of the golf course was there and witnessed the arrest.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

STEVE OSETEK, WITNESS TO ARREST: A man with a bulletproof vest and a gun had quickly been pointing towards the exit to get us out of there as soon as possible. It just appeared that two cars had pulled into the parking lot, put somebody to the curb. And I guess that's all they saw. I was just kind of pushed out of the way pretty quick.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BROOKS: Now, when he was arrested, he looked a lot different than he did when last time we saw him. His last public appearance, Andrea, was during a search of his house back in march. Now, then he started it grow a beard. He still had dark hair, but when he was arrested and his booking picture shows him with lighter hair. Had lost a little bit of weight, and also it seemed to have dyed his beard lighter also.

Now, it was the Modesto police that actually did arrest him in San Diego and drove him back here to Modesto for his processing last night --Andrea.

KOPPEL: I know we spoke last hour about the possibility they thought, police thought that Peterson might flee. Where do they think he would have gone?

BROOKS: Well, they were concerned that he was so close to the Mexican border in San Diego that there was a concern that he would possibly go over the line and go to Mexico. In fact, it was brought out at the press conference yesterday afternoon when they announced his arrest that they thought that he was a flight risk. He's being held here with no bail and also has been charged with two counts of murder, for Laci Peterson and her unborn child -- Andrea.

KOPPEL: Mike Brooks in Modesto, California, thanks so much.
