JIM BITTERMANN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (on camera): Several hundred thousand people gathered here at the Four Winds Airport on the outskirts of Madrid this evening for a vigil with Pope John Paul II. The pope, very popular among this crowd for, among other things, his stand against the Iraq war. The pope was very vehement against the war. Young people here in Spain were also very much against the war and, in fact, against their government because the government of Jose Maria Aznar, in fact, were very much -- was very much for the war. Just 48 hours ago, in fact, Colin Powell was here congratulating Prime Minister Aznar about his stand against the war. The two men met face- to-face this afternoon, convergent views on the war, but apparently the subject did not come up. According to reports coming out of that meeting, it was just a meeting that involved the family of Aznar meeting the pope.
So, young people gathered here this afternoon, some of them coming out for exactly that reason, they wanted to hear what the pope had to say about the war and what might -- what he might say about the government.
This is Jim Bittermann at Four Winds Airport outside Madrid.
