KELLI ARENA, CNN ANCHOR: Russian officials are calling twin suicide bombings at a rock music festival today an act of terrorism. Fourteen people were killed and dozens more were injured.
CNN's Moscow Bureau Chief Jill Dougherty joins us live with the latest on the attack -- Jill.
JILL DOUGHERTY, CNN MOSCOW BUREAU CHIEF: Well, Kelli, the police tonight are adding more details to how exactly this double suicide bombing took place. We're out at an airfield that's out in the northwest part of Moscow.
This is where it happened this afternoon, a concert going on, a rock concert inside and then outside two women suicide bombers who were trying to get inside to blow everybody, or as many as they could, up.
The police say that they approached the entrance but they were very agitated. The police spotted them immediately, would not let them in. The first woman detonated her bomb and it did not fully explode but she did kill about three people.
Then the second woman went to another entrance and that is really where most of the damage and the death occurred. The second woman exploded her belt filled with explosive devices and also they were told metal pieces within that and killed at least a dozen people so the total at this point is 14 dead and that would be also two and 16 total, which would include the suicide bombers.
Inside this area where the concert was taking place, the people who were in there actually almost all of them, 20,000 people, did not know that this was taking place outside and that was deliberate. The police did not want them to panic and come running out and perhaps have even more destruction.
So, the police this evening are saying that they are linking this to, at least one of the woman suicide bombers, to Chechen rebels and they also say that they're going to be upping security. It's already pretty tight across the city but they say they're going to be especially paying attention to areas where large groups of people gather -- back to you, Kelli.
ARENA: CNN Moscow Chief Jill Dougherty, thanks very much.
