KELLI ARENA, CNN ANCHOR: In Chicago, police report no deaths or serious injuries but a lot of damage on a day when the Windy City lived up to its name. CNN's Sean Callebs reports.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SEAN CALLEBS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Punishing storms hit the south side of Chicago at mid morning. Authorities estimate the winds at one point topped 85 miles an hour. Damage is widespread and extensive, trees and power lines overburdened by strong winds.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There was a big gust of wind and then all of a sudden it was just like a big boom and nothing. I mean you couldn't see anything in the streets. There was nothing laying. There's houses that are down the block that are completely destroyed. The roof on the park it's pretty much gone.

CALLEBS: As many as 120,000 customers lost electricity this holiday weekend. It could have been worse as authorities knew the storm was coming and had a chance to issue early warnings and prepare residents. Many people say their windows were blown out. Glass and debris was flying around.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, I heard like a noise and then suddenly it just started like a big gush of wind and hit the window and it just broke everything, all the windows, the trees started flying everywhere.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Stuff all over the place. I mean you could see oranges, stuff from kitchens, stuff from the bathroom, just all at my front door. IT was terrifying. I'm still terrified.

CALLEBS: And while many weathered the storm with some cuts and scrapes there are no reports of deaths or any serious injuries. Ambulances and a number of fire engines responded to calls throughout the area.

The south side of the windy city isn't the only area affected by the summer storm. Much of northern Illinois was under a hazardous weather outlook with the areas between Rockford and McHenry Counties suffering some of the worst damage, and a flood watch remains in effect for much of the area.
