RHONDA SCHAFFLER, CNN ANCHOR: In a shelter in Southern California, nearly 200 tiny chihuahua dogs await a judge's decision as to which of them will be allowed to live for adoption. That ruling comes next Thursday. In the meantime, a rescue group is racing against the clock to save as many as possible. Joe Konoval (ph) from CNN affiliate KCAL has the story.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is from Chihuahua Rescue for the Baldwin Park chihuahuas that we're all trying to save.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: At Chihuahua Rescue, volunteers are making hundreds of phone calls.
DEVON MILLER, CHIHUAHUA RESCUE: We're trying to adopt and or foster almost 200 dogs, 174 dogs.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: These are the dogs they're trying to save, some 200 chihuahuas rescued last summer and now being held in a Baldwin Park shelter.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We believe in giving all of them a chance.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That's Sierra, she's about a year and a half old.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Giving chihuahuas a second chance is what this shelter in Burbank has been doing for the past 10 years.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Wow, we just got a commitment for 30.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And now they're trying to find homes for all the Baldwin Park dogs before many of them are put to sleep.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And to think that we have a deadline to place 200 -- close to 200 in a few days, yes, it's very overwhelming.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A judge will make the final decision as to what happens to these little dogs in Baldwin Park. And Kimmy Peck (ph) is hoping the courts will realize the best places for these little dogs are in people's homes, where they can be rehabilitated with love.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I love chihuahuas.
