CALLEBS: And after living there for a few years, I can tell you, it is a place that is just enjoyable.
It has been described as the heart and lungs of New York City. Thousands of residents are marking the 150th anniversary for Central Park, today. CNN's Jacqui Jeras is there, now with the latest on all these celebrations.
Jacqui, not a bad assignment for you on this weekend?
JERAS: Well, I know, I can't complain. It's an absolutely beautiful day out here. About 150,000 people are supposed to be here this weekend to help and celebrate the 150th birthday. Festivities go on all day long and continue into the evening with a "Duetto," so, there's going to be a concert here, later on for tonight.
It started out with a cake celebration, this morning, people cut into the huge cake which was in the shape of the Bethesda Fountain, one of the big landmarks, here at Central park. And the park is huge; a lot of people don't realize how big this is -- 843 acres, the perimeter of it, if you walked around it, over six miles long and if you walked on every single pedestrian path here -- 58 miles.
So, there's so much to do, here, you can't even do it in one day. People love Central Park, whether you live here or whether you live halfway around the globe. There's really something for everyone here.
And, I want to talk to a couple people, some native New Yorkers, here. We also have some people from out of town. And you folks are actually from where? Los Angeles?
IMA YOUNG (PH): Los Angeles.
JERAS: What is your name, ma'am?
YOUNG: Ima Young.
JERAS: OK, and what is your impression of Central Park, here today?
YOUNG: Oh, I love it. I like the trees, the shade, just the atmosphere is really nice.
JERAS: And, how about you guys, are you having fun here, today?
UNIDENTIFIED BOY: Yes (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
JERAS: Did you ride the carousel?
UNIDENTIFIED BOY: No, not yet.
JERAS: That's one thing you're definitely going to have to go out and do that, absolutely.
And, we have some native New Yorkers. Everything kicked off with a run at 8:30 and you guys actually participated? Yes ladies?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We did, we ran this morning. It was a great day to run, beautiful day in the park.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I got the 6:20 train from Long Island to come in and they were all running to get extra miles before hand, because we're training for the marathon.
JERAS: And are you regular runners at Central Park?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Regular runners every morning at Central Park and almost every morning and weekend, and we meet together and have brunch.
JERAS: Excellent, do you guys have a favorite Central Park memory, perhaps?
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Recent memory, last weekend I spent the day in the partk. Went to the Central Park Zoo and went to the Boathouse for a couple drinks and appetizers, so that was nice. That's my most recent.
JERAS: Well, congratulation on the runs this morning, ladies.
So, a lot of people out here, weather couldn't be better. High temperature today, about 82 degrees, plenty of sunshine, so just gorgeous, all of the Northeast. We go very lucky, the showers and thunderstorms came through in the overnight hours and now it's beautiful and sunny for today. And, we're going to give the rest of the nations forecast, coming up a little bit later on in the show -- Sean.
CALLEBS: OK, Jacqui, enjoy your day out there. Thanks very much.
JERAS: Thank you.
