SHOPIA CHOI, CNN ANCHOR: We're getting information now about another attack in Iraq. The U.S. Central Command is reporting that one soldier was killed and two wounded when their convoy was attacked on a highway near Abu Ghurayd. Earlier, three U.S. soldiers were killed as their unit guarded a hospital north of Baghdad.
CNN's Nic Robertson went to the scene in Ba Qubah.

NIC ROBERTSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Pulling razor wire across the road, a U.S. soldier seals off back of a children's hospital, site of the latest deadly attack on U.S. troops.

According to one bystander, the soldiers relaxing, playing cards when the attack took place.

"The cafeteria people told me that a grenade was dropped on the soldiers," he says, "killing three of them and injuring another." Minutes later, say witnesses, soldiers blocked access to and from the hospital.

MAJ. DWAINE FLANNAGAN, U.S. ARMY: The operations are undergoing to secure the building and see if the individual or individuals who conducted attack are still in the area.

ROBERTSON: From windows above the area where the soldiers were attacked, patients and relatives looked down on the troops below, as family and friends wait outside.

"The U.S. soldiers are targeted because they are still in Iraq," he says. "They inflict pain on us. Look now, the sick people are stuck in hospital and no one knows what's happening."

(on camera): The last week has been the most deadly for U.S. troops since the end of the war. 14 soldiers killed, 8 of those dying since Uday and Qusay were killed a few days ago. And soldiers here say mortar attacks have increased on their base recently.

(voice-over): To the north in Mosul, U.S. troops began demolishing the house where Saddam Hussein's two sons died. U.S. officials had warned of increased attacks following their deaths.

Not yet clear if the Ba Qubah attack part of that anticipated upsurge. Or whether the anti U.S. forces will sustain their recent onslaught.

Nic Robertson, CNN, Ba Qubah, Iraq.
