RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN ANCHOR: We also want to go now to the battle for California. One of the most prominent candidates for the Republican race bowed out this afternoon. Miguel marquez joins us from los angeles and has that story -- Miguel.
MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: He certainly did, Renay. And we're at the Sunset Junction Street Fair here in Los Angeles where many such street fairs happen during the summertime. And a lot of politicians come out. We have presidential politicians, Arianna Huffington supposed to be here. But the only thing people want to talk about is the recall of California, even eclipsing a lot of those presidential aspirations out there.

The big news today is that one of the four major Republicans in this race has dropped out. Bill Simon, made a taped statement today saying that there were just too many Republicans in the race and that his staying in might cost his party the governorship here in California.

Mr. Schwarzenegger, a short time after Mr. Simon dropped out, released a statement, saying that I hope Bill's personal sacrifice will serve to unify Republicans and other Californians who are eager to join the movement to give California back its future. Certainly Mr. Schwarzenegger has a lot to give, since he is a fellow Republican and they're fighting for the same votes.

The Republican, though, that may have the most to gain from this thing is State Senator Tom McClintock. He's a fairly conservative Republican, like Mr. Simon. They were going for the same base. I talk to McClintock's folks today. His presspeople say that their internal polling is a three-way race, McClintock, Schwarzenegger and Bustamante. It's Bustamante they mean to target in this race and who they will be running against -- Renay.

SAN MIGUEL: Miguel Marquez reporting live from California. Thanks so much.
