JUDY FORTIN, CNN ANCHOR: California Governor Gray Davis could be out of a job just 11 days from now. To protect himself he's turned to television. The "no" on the recall ad is running across the state. Just one more sign that time is growing short before the October 7th vote.
CNN's Miguel Marquez is watching the politicking as the days dwindle down. Just 10 days to go, right Miguel?

MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: It's coming up. You know, 10 days until the Californians head to the ballot box and cast their votes. I thought a blow horn or something, because it's coming down to single digits now. This thing is really starting to pick up speed. It makes my heart palpitate just a bit.

And even though they are not running against each other, the campaign has come down to Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger slugging it out, essentially. Davis saying he's had it with Schwarzenegger badmouthing his record, and has challenged him to a debate. Schwarzenegger declined, saying Davis should debate the 1.6 million Californians who signed the recall petition.

Davis is persisting, though. He says that he does want to debate Mr. Schwarzenegger, and Mr. Schwarzenegger so far is continuing to say, no way. But without a debate partner, Davis has a new ad responding to what his staff says are a deluge of negative attacks from Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Take a listen to this.

ANNOUNCER: Arnold Schwarzenegger is attacking Gray Davis on the budget. But official state records show spending went up less under Davis than under Pat Brown, Jerry Brown, George Deukmejian. less than even Ronald Reagan. Forty-seven states and the...

MARQUEZ: So you kind of get the idea. He's hitting him with all barrels against some of the folks that have run and governed California before.

Now, meanwhile, back at the other campaigns -- there are other campaigns in this race -- Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante has yet another problem with his campaign finances. According to the "Sacramento Bee," the judge who ordered Bustamante to return $3.8 million in contributions from Indian casinos has now said he wants Bustamante to prove that the money has already been spent, as Bustamante claims.

Bustamante has maintained that he bought television ad time with the money and can't get back. At a campaign event today, Bustamante said his staff has started to call television stations to see if the money could be returned. And so far, none of them have said it can be returned.

One other thing. Remember Peter Ueberroth, the moderate Republican who dropped out of the race? A former campaign staffer for him says early this week he may endorse either Arnold Schwarzenegger or the other Republican in the race, still the big Republican, Tom McClintock -- Judy.

FORTIN: Miguel Marquez, thank you very much.

MARQUEZ: Sure.
