CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Embattled Governor Gray Davis is showing he's not afraid to duke it out with the Terminator.
CNN's Miguel Marquez is in Los Angeles with the latest now on the California recall race out there, hi Miguel.

MIGUEL MARQUEZ, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, how are you?

This is starting to look like one of Mr. Schwarzenegger's movies, that's for sure. As Election Day nears, the California recall is starting to look like a race between two candidates who technically aren't even running against each other.

Governor Gray Davis is fighting the recall and also slugging it out with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the front running Republican. Davis says he's had it with Schwarzenegger bad-mouthing his record and challenged him to a debate. Schwarzenegger declined saying Davis should debate the 1.6 million Californians who signed the recall petition.

Now, CNN's Larry King is jumping in offering a venue for a debate. Davis has accepted. The Schwarzenegger staff said been there, done that just a couple of weeks ago. We'll enjoy watching the governor on Larry King explaining himself to California voters.

Schwarzenegger's staff is calling the Davis camp desperate and Davis is responding that Schwarzenegger is muddying the water with bad facts. Davis' new ad goes after Schwarzenegger for what he says are distortions of his record. Is it a negative ad? Well, that's kind of in the eye of the watcher, I suppose. Davis' campaign says it's simply a response to a deluge of negative attacks from Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And, Davis and Schwarzenegger as they duke it out other candidates are making nice. Have you ever heard of a Democrat stump for a Republican that he's running against? Well, you're about to.

At a campaign stop today, Cruz Bustamante, the only prominent Democrat in the race is playing up Tom McClintock, the other prominent Republican in the race. McClintock is taking votes from Arnold Schwarzenegger and if Davis is recalled most analysts believe McClintock could be a spoiler putting Bustamante in the governor's office and, from the way he's talking today, Bustamante may be counting on and rooting for Republican Tom McClintock.

LIN: Miguel, I think you need a flow chart.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LT. GOV. CRUZ BUSTAMANTE (D), GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE: Moving up, has moved up pretty quickly. The one who's really been moving in this race has been Tom McClintock. Tom has done a good job to get up there. Tom has a really strong message and there's a group of people out there who strongly believe in his values.

MARQUEZ: Now, here's a little something else to look forward to, a new poll, this one by CNN, "USA Today" and Gallup. It was taken after the debate last Wednesday, the one that Mr. Schwarzenegger was in and the pollsters are busily crunching the numbers right now and we'll have them for you tomorrow - Carol.

LIN: OK, we're trying to follow this race as best we can, aren't we?

MARQUEZ: (Unintelligible.)

LIN: I'm wondering are there going to be any more big endorsements?

MARQUEZ: There is one more endorsement that we know of that may be coming early this week, Peter Ueberroth. He was a moderate Republican in the race, dropped out a few weeks back and his says or his staff says that he will likely endorse either Mr. Schwarzenegger or Mr. McClintock early this week - Carol.

LIN: So, what do you think the next ten days are going to look like?

MARQUEZ: Craziness, crazier than the last 40, 50 days or so. They're going to look like a lot of television ads if you live out here in California. The campaigns have millions of dollars to spend. They've already spent millions of dollars and you're going to see a lot of campaign ads and a lot of the candidates in your neck of the woods.

Mr. Schwarzenegger, for instance, is doing a fly-in to several airports tomorrow doing rallies all over the state. You're going to see a lot of the same from other candidates. It's going to be - it's going to get interesting, even more interesting.

LIN: There you go everything being relative in this race, huh?

MARQUEZ: Oh, yes.

LIN: All right, thanks Miguel.

MARQUEZ: Sure.

LIN: Miguel Marquez live in Los Angeles.
